Brilliant news. Children need a properly structured service taking a holistic approach. Some people will still transition when they become adults but let them do so the basis of proper clinical and psychological support.

donquixotedelamancha · 28/07/2022 13:09

If they do actually say what they’re going to then the service will be so much better for children who need help with gender dysphoria and actually be evidence based like the rest of medicine. I think closing the Tavistock and restarting with a more rounded service will be so much easier than trying to sort out the mess at the current clinic.

In the long term I'm very hopeful that will be the case. The problem is that most of the unsupervised social transitioning of children has been occuring before they get to the Tavi- from CAHMS, SS, schools and parents who go to Mermaids for advice.

In the short term there will still be loads of kids in distress turning to underqualified sources for support and ordering PBs under the table.

This is amazing news. Finally putting the children's actual needs first.

AlternativelyWired · 28/07/2022 13:11

Excellent news! Has Twitter imploded yet?

corlan · 28/07/2022 13:12

It's good news. I honestly believe we have unconsciously been practicing a form of eugenics against autistic girls in this country. Hopefully that will come to an end now.

It’s important to say I don’t celebrate a clinic closing because I don’t want the service to be available, but because I want a great and safe service to be available: the Tavistock was not providing this. I really want good services available for children and hope they come soon.

well done Dr Cass!

Absolutely!

Thank you Dr Cass and Keira Bell.

What a week. I am struggling massively with my own mental health this week. Trying to take a moment to appreciate the good news. Women are amazing.

Eightiesfan · 28/07/2022 13:14

Incredible news, a win for every vulnerable gender non-conforming child.

I seldom get emotional but I'm overwhelmed by this news. If I weren't on a train I'd probably cry.

Thank you Keira. Thank you Dr Cass. And thank you to Mumsnet who gave us a space to discuss the issues while #nodebate held sway nearly everywhere else. I dunno how many years I've been banging on about this.

MrsJamin · 28/07/2022 13:15

This is brilliant news! Get ready for a lot of campaigning led by mermaids that it should be allowed to stay open and fearmongering that it'll lead to suicides of teens. They just knew of the inevitability of a class action law suit from detransitioners. I really hope these new centres will genuinely seek to help address gender questioning teens real issues rather than give them pills with life altering irreversible consequences.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 28/07/2022 13:16

Absolutely incredible!

In the light of this news, I wonder whether the denial of Kiera Bell's appeal against the overturning of her win against the Tavistock might now be reconsidered. The appeals process might well be exhausted by now - and so might Keira, having put up such a courageous fight for so long - but surely this amounts to fresh evidence about the dangers of their practices she worked so hard to expose in the first place. On the other hand, what better vindication of her position could there possibly be?

Brava, Hilary Cass.

IcakethereforeIam · 28/07/2022 13:16

I agree @donquixotedelamancha I hope holistic means how gender ideology was fed to these children before they go to where they are. Then following it back and making changes to prevent other kids being damaged.

maranella · 28/07/2022 13:17

That's amazing news!

Thank you to all the brave women who are standing up and giving evidence and speaking out and forcing organisations to obey the law and for the NHS to only provide safe, evidence-based treatment.

Particular thanks to Hilary Cass and Keira Bell Flowers

Spottybluepyjamas · 28/07/2022 13:17

This has made me so so happy! Let's hope young people now start getting the care and support that they need without medical intervention!

Signalbox · 28/07/2022 13:17

I wonder if this will deal with the likes of the Webberley's prescribing blockers and testosterone. If treatments need to be done on a research basis and outcomes monitored then they can't have private clinics undermining that can they? Hopefully one of HC's recommendations is that treatments can only be carried out under research conditions.

It was you banging on about it, Prawn, that got me banging on about it.

MajorieEks · 28/07/2022 13:18

So far, as far as I can make out, the take on twitter is that it isn't being closed down due to safety concerns but instead is just being decentralised so children can access healthcare closer to home.

Rainbowshit · 28/07/2022 13:19

This is brilliant news. Hopefully children will get the treatment they actually need rather than the one size fits all approach.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 28/07/2022 13:19

Cass report website has an update cass.independent-review.uk/entry-7-research/ which includes the full letter she sent to the NHS last week

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/07/2022 13:19

Thank goodness - I hope these children finally get the support and care they need

MercurialMonday · 28/07/2022 13:21

I hope they can set up these regional centres quickly and fund them appropriately as there's clearly a need but it's a absolute scandal evidence base medicine, routine follow ups and evaluations haven't been as standard.

Abitofalark · 28/07/2022 13:22

Thank you thank you to all those at the Tavistock - Sonia Appleby and David Bell and others whose names I forget who spoke out and did all they could. This is such good news and what a profound sense of relief.

FireFlyBoogaloo · 28/07/2022 13:24

Wow. I think... I mean, it's been a veeeeery long time, but I think I'm feeling something like... faith in our institutions?

Crazy times.
