this is marvellous news

Datun · 28/07/2022 12:51

I can just see Mermaids and others now trying to wheedle their way into the new centres. This must NOT be allowed to happen!!

I seriously doubt it. But you're right to be wary.

Hopefully, mermaids are heading for a bit of accountability when the LGBA case comes up.

achillestoes · 28/07/2022 12:51

Hilary Cass is fast rising up my list of absolute sheroes.

BenCooperSuperTrouper · 28/07/2022 12:52

I cannot wait for the press release from Mermaids.

Helleofabore · 28/07/2022 12:52

Thank you Keira Bell! And thank you Dr Cass!

Signalbox · 28/07/2022 12:52

Such good news. What a result.

I cannot wait for the press release from Mermaids.

I predict that it will be chock-full of oblivious foot shooting.

Igmum · 28/07/2022 12:53

Oh thank goodness. I know it isn't over, given how captured many psychologists are and the fact that mental health provision is on its knees, we have a long way to go, but this is brilliant news. Thank you so much Hilary Cass, Keira Bell and Mrs A.

Wouldloveanother · 28/07/2022 12:54

😮

This entirely sums up my thoughts and feelings in this. Thank goodness.

chilling19 · 28/07/2022 12:55

This is good news. Proper treatment, then if transitioning is the way forward, proper research protocols and follow up.

Keira, your brave court case led directly to this. Thank you and I hope you are well.

Meanwhile, how can we make sure this slithering under the radar never happens again?

Same

Helleofabore · 28/07/2022 12:55

What impact will these actions from Dr Cass have on James Esses case I wonder?

Oh that’s actually made me cry. Proper holistic care, mental health support and rigorous data collection

Actual, evidence-based healthcare, available on the NHS.

What has it come to that I am so moved and grateful for evidence-based appropriate healthcare for these young people.

I should be angry at the Tavi's tainted history and the legacy of the inappropriate healthcare but for now I accept this as progress.

For Deborah Cohen, Hannah Barnes, Az Hakeem, Sonia Appleby, David Bell, for everyone who has contributed to this, my heartfelt thanks.

It’s important to say I don’t celebrate a clinic closing because I don’t want the service to be available, but because I want a great and safe service to be available: the Tavistock was not providing this. I really want good services available for children and hope they come soon.

well done Dr Cass!

I'd go as fa as saying that I am furious with the people who ran the service that it has come to this. Adults so captured that they put a bullshit ideology ahead of the best available evidence in treating the children in their care. They should hang their heads in shame. I really wouldn't care if the bastards never secured gainful employment ever again. I wouldn't trust them to water my plants whilst I was on holiday nevermind make treatment decisions with, potentially, lifelong consequences for children.

EdgeOfACoin · 28/07/2022 12:58

The Times article says that the final report isn't due until next year.

If the Tavistock is being de-commissioned already, the evidence against it must have been overwhelming.

Fenlandia · 28/07/2022 12:58

Whoa nellie, that's stunning. I'm so relieved that all the work done by the people mentioned by others has finally cracked the carapace of the Tavistock and its anti-science, anti-ethics policies. Dare I look on Twitter?

Beowulfa · 28/07/2022 13:00

The grown ups are back in charge. What a relief.

Fenlandia · 28/07/2022 13:00

Janice Turner's recent report in the Times was devastating www.thetimes.co.uk/article/what-went-wrong-at-the-tavistock-clinic-for-trans-teenagers-v5cfcw77n

littlbrowndog · 28/07/2022 13:02

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏to all the brave people

NotBadConsidering · 28/07/2022 13:03

Unbelievable news. So pleased children will finally get the care they need and deserve, not the care they have been pushed into by ideologists.

Exactly! Timely as I was just reading a horrific account of a US mother who is not allowed to see her daughter because she doesn't affirm the child's belief that she is actually a boy. The US and Canada have a long way to go to catch up with Europe.

Mennex · 28/07/2022 13:05

Hope this will make some of the borderline Munchausen parents that think it's cool or trendy to have a trans kid think twice, and maybe some of the homophobes too.

EdgeOfACoin · 28/07/2022 13:06

People from other countries appear to be commenting on Twitter. It will be interesting to see if any other European countries are next.

Collidascope · 28/07/2022 13:06

What a relief. The word "holistic" is music to my ears. In what batshit world was it ever a good idea to ignore all the other comorbidities and just focus on changing a child's body into a poor imitation of the opposite sex? And then not to collect any data on how that was working out for them. Experimenting on kids would be bad enough, but what they did didn't even meet the standard for that when there was no data collection.
