Simon Rimmer's inadequate facilities

Lulabelle went to TV chef Simon Rimmer's new restaurant and was not happy with the unisex toilets

Just been to @simonrim's lovely new restaurant where I was disappointed to discover gender neutral toilets. Men and women awkwardly shuffling round each other wondering if they were in the wrong place. Yeuch.

Rimmer's been trying to defend them all afternoon but it's not been going well due to the fabulous, intelligent women making him look daft.

The lovely Maya Forstater has given up her afternoon to look into the building regulations and codes and it appears that she's unearthed some problems.

(warning long thread from Maya)

Hopefully now he'll be forced to create single-sex spaces.

God, I wish men would just accept that they no longer get a free pass to just do what the fuck they like, and go where the fuck they like.

Because that’s what this is, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, and beat ‘em in their own spaces.”

Just get out of our faces.

IKR?

'Man takes one look at woman washing blood off hands and walks out' isn't really the, er, compassionate solution that antifascist fondly imagines it is. 😁

Its the restaurant bit thats making me smirk

no, no one ever has to wash blood off their hands or clothes in a restaurant

every where else in the world yes absolutely leaks can happen

but not in a restaurant thats like a fact

Datun · 17/07/2022 08:54

"A poll of 7,000 people conducted for the campaign group Sex Matters found that an overwhelming 98 per cent wanted to be able to get undressed, shower or use the lavatory away from members of the opposite sex."

You have to ask what sort of person doesn't want women to protect their boundaries.

I know! It's so incongruous that the thought process is difficult to fathom.

Like you can menstruate in, say, the fashion department, or possibly the WI or maybe the hairdressers. But a restaurant? Where people are eating? And socialising? In public! Oh my dear, nooo. The very idea!

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/07/2022 09:06

I'm willing to bet Rimmer thought he was being trendy having mixed toilets and, bonus, his architect sold him the idea as space saving so they could fit extra tables into the restaurant. I doubt he did much (any) research and from his position of male privilege. I wonder what his wife thinks, assuming he's still married, as she was involved in the running of his Hale. Altrincham restaurant some years ago?

I totally agree Datun what kind of man is advocating for mixed sex toilets?
I am so past people calling me transphobic for wanting single sex toilets for myself and my daughters. I don't think we need to be so open about blood to the decent men using the mixed sex toilets, it sounds like they don't like them either. But they do need to start speaking up. This affects their mothers, daughters, nieces, grandchildren etc., perhaps this is the angle we should be taking?

Lysianthus · 17/07/2022 09:53

At least all new builds must have separate facilities. What a shame that no one in power recognises that, logically, that legislation ought to apply across the board.

Lysianthus · 17/07/2022 09:55

And even though this is viral on sm, for anyone who might have missed it. I'm sorry I don't know who to credit.

I like this one too, @Lysianthus ….
It is a really good pictorial summary of the shot show that is happening.

I was in a restaurant in Glasgow recently which had two doors into two sets of toilets. One was labelled "urinals and cubicles". The other was labelled "cubicles". So in essence, a free for all for the men who have the choice of all the spaces, and nothing single-sex for women.

Not impressed and won't be back.

It really is a case of “pick the infamous” on that door!

"In 50 years of using women's toilets I have never, ever seen women washing blood off their hands and clothing or taking off clothes to wash off menstrual blood. If I needed to do anything like that myself I wipe my hands within the cubicle and change my clothes there."

Lucky you. I don't any more, being menopausal, but I have had to, when I was in my teens. And doing that in the cubicle wasn't possible because the sinks were outside. I would have been horrified to have to do that with men around.

LK1972 · 17/07/2022 10:24

@Icimoi wow, you clearly have a superior foresight of carrying spare clothes with you whenever you menstruate, I'm amazed and silenced in shame at my stupidity.

And also agree with you - if I haven't seen things with my own eyes they definitely don't exist, even if loads others assure me it's true. Many, many things people talk about are clearly imagined, as I haven't seen they for myself. People are so foolish Wink

Awesome that you have the foresight and bag space to have packed replacement clothes and that your colleagues wouldnt notice the change of clothes. The rest of us rinse at the sink to remove the most obvious stains and use the air hand dryer (one reason i hate the dyson hand dryers as the male designers think the only thing they are used for is hands).

However this reads like you’ve never had blood soak through to your clothes, if you’re female appreciate your luck on never having heavy periods or a miscarriage and stop assuming you know what many women have to deal with.

ilovesushi · 17/07/2022 10:44

They brought in a mixed sex loo on my floor at my old workplace. The all male team I worked with were all very apologetic about it making self depreciating comments about the hygiene of men's loos compared to women's. I just got the lift up two floors to a single sex loo. Essentially the mixed sex one became an additional male toilet.

Probably. I also think men like Rimmer have a hard time comprehending that there might be spaces that they cannot use.

This thread has reminded me - did anyone get a response from Bill's Restaurant about their toilet policy?

I went to the Bill's near London Victoria last month and the toilets were separate single sex. There was one accessible disabled toilet downstairs as well.

I visited the Head offices of a well known charitable foundation & there toilets were mixed. I'm not keen on mixed loos for obvious reasons but I was just about OK with these. They were all enclosed cubicle loos with separate sink & dryer inside each cubicle. The cubicles nearest to the door were reserved for women& those at the end were for men. However, I still felt weird using the loo when I knew there was a man a few cubicles down.

NecessaryScene · 17/07/2022 10:59

Essentially the mixed sex one became an additional male toilet.

Which was of course the situation before women's toilets were invented. The toilets that existed weren't explicitly male toilets, right? Nothing technically stopped them using them...

PronounssheRa · 17/07/2022 11:09

This thread reminds me of the time a male TRA thought women could just hold a period in, like you can with erm other toilet functions. These people have no idea what it is to live as an actual women, and they have zero interest in finding out either.

Pickanameforme · 17/07/2022 01:01

Steve I totally agree. The only way to stop this shit is by making it a men's problem.

Agree also. My first thought when reading the comment from the diabetic man who feels uncomfortable about using his insulin in mixed toilets was 'bet they listen to him before they listen to the thousands of women who have been objecting'.

Animalatina · 17/07/2022 11:30

The only way to stop this shit is by making it a men's problem.

Agree 100%, why's it's always left to women when alone in a gender neutral toilet to kick up a stink?

antifascist · 17/07/2022 11:32

has anyone seen the cubicles in question?

I imagine they have floor to ceiling doors - also lmay well have basins inside the cubicle.

to read this thread you would imagine that there was just one big communal bench with a drop.

If the sinks are outside, they are not in the cubicle. Do engage your brain, it might may your posts coherent.
