98% of people want single sex spaces - poll report from YouGov

... a poll from Sex Matters, reported on by yougov:

'A poll of 7,000 people conducted for the campaign group Sex Matters found that an overwhelming 98 per cent wanted to be able to get undressed, shower or use the lavatory away from members of the opposite sex. Almost as many said single-sex spaces were important to them and they want to be able to demand
a woman carer for an elderly female relative who needs looking after. And 89 per cent agreed that women and girls should be allowed to meet up by themselves in groups such as Guides. As for single-sex sports teams, 61 per cent said they were important for “fairness and safety.”'

Not exactly surprising… ! But I feel a relief reading that. I was beginning to think that a few people had just gone a bit doolally.

TenThousandSpoons · 16/07/2022 22:57

Phew

EaselArt · 16/07/2022 23:00

I hope they send a copy to every MP and councillor in the country

PearlClutch · 16/07/2022 23:03

I have had a look for the survey itself, on Sex Matters' site and on yougov, but not found it yet.

I'm a bit relived too, it's hard to remember we haven't lost the war yet. I wonder if any law-makers / law-destroyers will give a shit?

TheBestBitch · 16/07/2022 23:07

I hope politicians take note

Pluvia · 16/07/2022 23:12

I've been involved in several WRN street events where we've leafleted and talked to anyone who'll stop and talk to us, and even those who know nothing about what's going on and who can't see a problem with things like self-ID are clear that when it comes to loos and changing rooms single-sex is what they want. Men say it, as well as women. Men say they wouldn't want a woman coming into their loos or changing in their changing rooms. Time after time complete strangers have asked. 'What kind of man would want to get into women's facilities?' This is it. The kind of man who wants to get into women's loos and changing rooms and hospital wards is exactly the kind of man who shouldn't be allowed in them.

Ah, to be launched in Parliament on Tuesday.

This is excellent, not least because I think a few years ago there would have been a problem even getting You Gov to run such polling.

FrancescaContini · 17/07/2022 07:50

Of course they do. Nobody in their right mind wants “gender neutral” 🤦‍♀️ aka mixed sex spaces…oh, wait…

KangarooKenny · 17/07/2022 07:53

I absolutely agree in single sex spaces, but what happens when you have a TW/TM ? Are they allowed in ?

SallyLockheart · 17/07/2022 07:53

That daily mail article will be illuminating for many. Where there is a clash of rights, everyone else is being classed lower than transwomen (primarily) - particularly ethnic minority women

They go into the toilet that matches their sex, obviously.

SallyLockheart · 17/07/2022 07:56

TW/TM should be in their sex category - the alternative is that THEY campaign for separate third/unisex provision.

Yes, I have often noticed this. Many women from particular ethnic or religious backgrounds would be beyond horrified at a male entering their toilet or changing room. If their English is not very strong or they are of a much older generation, they may not have the confidence to challenge the male.

Believing that it’s acceptable for a male to enter intimate, private female spaces on the grounds that the male is deluded enough to think that he’s actually female, and entitled enough to enter these spaces, is very much a luxury belief: held by a certain demographic and age group.

Do trans people not know what sex they are?

oviraptor21 · 17/07/2022 08:03

Good news on the single sex spaces.
Not so good on keeping women's sport. There needs to be more sunlight on this issue I feel.

FilePhoto · 17/07/2022 08:10

I wonder how many of that 98% actually believe people can change sex though.

I know people who claim women's toilets are still single sex if you let TW in because TW literally are women. (And vice versa of course.)

mrshoho · 17/07/2022 08:16

AlisonDonut · 17/07/2022 08:02

Do trans people not know what sex they are?

They used to and many still do. But since the likes of SW and other gender ideologist movements have been brainwashing and lying to people, we now have a large number of people who really do believe that their fantasies are real. It didn't help that the government, health services and legal system was stupidly going along with it.

Mamansparkles · 17/07/2022 08:34

SallyLockheart · 17/07/2022 07:56

It doesn't need to be either/or on the 'who campaigns for it' although I agree it needs to be lead by trans people to have any real weight. I would be more than happy to support a campaign by trans rights organisations for third spaces for trans people. The existing 'use the disabled toilet' (also already often shared by the babychange facilities) isn't good enough.
If a trans rights organisation started a petition to have an additional third gender neutral space akin to an additional individual closed toilet like disabled toilets but without needing the extra space/adaptation to make places more accessible for them I would 100% sign that petition in support.
Campaigning for such a thing would be showing they recognise that single sex spaces are important to women, and I'd be very happy to return the courtesy by supporting a reasonable request like this for something important to them.

OllyBJolly · 17/07/2022 08:34

Wonder if Simon Rimmer read it? He’s getting a bit of a wake up call on Twitter twitter.com/simonrim/status/1548294512593670146?s=21&t=NIVE_5QUCT8kadmmvMPdtA

I believe a lot of people just won’t visit his restaurant rather than say specifically why.

beastlyslumber · 17/07/2022 08:35

I'm surprised that the number of people concerned about males in women's sport isn't higher. Although 61% is still a big majority, I guess.

SallyLockheart · 17/07/2022 08:38

I would happily support a campaign for third space facilities but doing so without transgender leading the call would just lead to accusations of transphobia and “you are trying to segregate “ us. The reality seems to be that transwomen don’t want third spaces, they want our spaces.

Slothtoes · 17/07/2022 09:30

how can we help Sex Matters do this? This is common sense obviously but we know not everyone cares or subscribes to that.

Sex Matters are a small organisation, what do they need us to do? Write to our MPs linking to this? What about schools, hospitals, care homes, sports centres, shops etc?

GrouchyKiwi · 17/07/2022 09:49

I'm really surprised by the figures for women's sport. Under every article that touches on the subject the comments are overwhelmingly in support of keeping sport segregated by sex. Those men who have competed in women's sport are called cheats in those comment sections.
