If you have a Conservative MP and want to protect the rights of women and safeguard children please email them TONIGHT and ask them to support Kemi.

Penny Mordaunt still the bookies favourite (and they aren't often wrong) but we need to let everyone know how dangerous it will be for this woman to become PM; I don't believe she has changed her mind for one moment.

Anyone who believes she (or any of the others) give a flying 'F' about anything other than winning the support of 150,000 or so, mainly white, mainly male, mainly retired party members is deluded.

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 20:08

‘I think policy wise we will miss Boris.’

Yes, we will.

theworldhas · 13/07/2022 20:08

That Penny Morduant line about trans women being women may well come back to haunt her during the next GE election campaign. Hard to paint Starmer as woke etc (the Tories favourite line of attack these days) when you keep contradicting yourself about what a woman is.

That’ll leave the Tories to fight on … the strength of their economic record? Thriving public services? Brexit Part II?

@BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ - given that you don't seem to understand how this process works - no one on here has any influence on whether Badenoch is chosen or not. Tory MPs choose. This is not an election. The person who they choose will lead until there is a general election. That may not be until 2025 but is likely to be much sooner.

Party members vote on the final 2.

calmlakes · 13/07/2022 20:19

theworldhas · 13/07/2022 19:59

Hopefully Penny Morduant will win as she’s the only major politician from either major party not afraid to show her support for trans men and women.

That was prior to needing to win a leadership election.
Now, not so much.
Daft really because now neither side will trust her.

In the shoes of the new PM/Education Secretary I’d review the whole of SEND provision. It’s not just about what’s cheaper (though cost is a consideration). It’s about what works.

It is being reviewed and there is currenly a whole load of recommendations which will erode the rights of Children with SEN. A consultation is live!

www.gov.uk/government/consultations/send-review-right-support-right-place-right-time

I agree that changes can be made to improve what best look likes, but this review doesn't do that - I will just make life harder for children with SEN and disabilities

theworldhas · 13/07/2022 20:27

@Octomore
What about women that are negatively affected by the rolling back of the state? Poor women, sick women, disabled women.... do they not count, because the threat to them doesn't also affect you?

Reasonable points - though a post about the next Tory PM isn’t the place for them: If someone is still a Tory MP, following the last 12 years of Tory government, I think it’s safe to say they couldn’t care less about poverty.

How do you help those women in a society that no longer equates woman as an adult human female?

What do you mean by female?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/07/2022 20:32

Hopefully Penny Morduant will win as she’s the only major politician from either major party not afraid to show her support for trans men and women.

When it suits her, when it doesn't, not so much.

Diamondsareforever123 · 13/07/2022 20:40

Please understand this is a black woman who has stated racism does not exist. She wants to cut TAs in schools. She wants to means test the winter fuel allowance. She is nothing more than a power grabber and liar. I kid you not she is extremely right wing and vicious - don't believe the lies.

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 20:46

@Diamondsareforever123

What does her race have to do with her opinions? Is she disentitled to have an opinion because she’s black?

antifascist · 13/07/2022 21:00

Anyone claiming Badenoch as a feminist has no concern about women as parents, as students, or as workers - they don't care about poor women, disabled women, refugee women, or women of colout

all they care about is echoing the Sun and the Daily Mail

lifeturnsonadime · 13/07/2022 21:01

I don’t think she means that. I think she means the culture of one-to-one TAs for children with significant learning challenges in order to promote ‘inclusion’ - which, when you look at the results on a population level, doesn’t work. I’m not being ‘small state’ about this, I just question how much money you can put into something to protect a principle.

I don't think inclusion works either but removing support in mainstream only works if there is adequate SEN provision, there isn't.

Inclusion is CHEAPER than creating specialist provisions.

The Education Bill will force the hands of parents who will either have to deregister or face prosecution. It will further legitimise off-rolling of children with additional needs. It will create a disability underclass. Parents unable to work because kids not in school, kids not being educated at all (at least not in a way where their needs are met).

It is so short sighted.

antifascist · 13/07/2022 21:02

If you think Rupert Murdoch or the owner of the Dailt Mail cares who goes into what toilet - except as a way to rabblerouse I have here 350 million pounds a week that I will donating to the NHS on your behalf

But I don’t know the provisions of the Education Bill so probably shouldn’t comment on it until I do.

Diamondsareforever123 · 13/07/2022 21:11

This woman does not care about women's rights. She's verging on fascist. Really, really evil. Don't eat the lies.

@Clymene thanks for the A Level Government and Politics lesson. I absolutely do understand how it works though and people here may well have a vote if she gets into the final two- which is obviously quite unlikely with things as they stand. But, as I say, thanks for schooling me on this not being an election. And again, thanks for the update on when an election actually is due.

What I’m saying is if she gets into the final two- and actually even if she doesn’t- it’s not on that it gets left up to 180k party members to make this decision. This person might be our prime minister for 3.5 years. I would like a day in who that should be one way or another.

But she knows what a woman is so I am going to vote for her.

antifascist · 13/07/2022 21:15

This will the the 3rd Prime Minister in a row who was first elected to office by the Conservative membership, not by the country.

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 21:15

‘This woman does not care about women's rights. She's verging on fascist. Really, really evil. Don't eat the lies.’

Honestly I think this sort of hyperbole turns people off the left as much as anything else. Badenoch is right wing. She’s not a fascist. I don’t see her designing her own flag to put up everywhere or making massive statues of herself or making people swear loyalty oaths. She believes in a small state, that’s fairly normal as far as it goes.

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 21:16

@antifascist

If the left was bothered about direct democracy they wouldn’t have gone all out to get Johnson out. Brown would never have been PM.

jgw1 · 13/07/2022 21:26

Does Jeremy Corbyn know what a woman is?

calmlakes · 13/07/2022 21:29

This isn't helpful.
You don't have to agree with the woman but this is just hyperbolic.
You would do better calmly outlining what policies you disagree with and why.
You would find plenty of support on Mumsnet.

This comment from another website;

Overall, that leaves Sunak and Truss and I do feel rather depressed at the prospect of that Hobson's choice. I just don't think either of them will grab the voters attention or indeed be a very good PM. Lets face it, they both sat in a Cabinet that locked the country down repeatedly for no positive reason and spent £400 billion doing it.
