If you have a Conservative MP and want to protect the rights of women and safeguard children please email them TONIGHT and ask them to support Kemi.

Penny Mordaunt still the bookies favourite (and they aren't often wrong) but we need to let everyone know how dangerous it will be for this woman to become PM; I don't believe she has changed her mind for one moment.

Agree with Floisme bit of an overreaction there

Conflictedunicorn · 15/07/2022 21:50

I’ve never been called extreme right before. Bit of a novelty. Anyhoo, I thought Kemi did really well in the debate. My prediction is she’ll be given a senior role in the cabinet to get experience and to get her face out there, then a shoe in for next leader, which if it’s Sunak will be sooner rather than later.

It happens.. people get confused and go for the typical

antifascist · 15/07/2022 22:12

The government would make legislation about rent and prices, just as it does about speed limits, age people can buy alcohol, size of letters on your numberplates, or why you can be deported to Jamaica or Rwanda

That's right

She did "really well "

This concerns me a tad; I'd like to know her position. (From Ch 4 news)

"Four of the five candidates for the Conservative Party leadership committed to maintaining the government’s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
The only one not to have done so yet is Kemi Badenoch. The move follows a warning from International Environment Minister Lord Zac Goldsmith who said that the leadership contenders needed to be more serious about climate promises or the party will face dire electoral consequences.
His warning came as temperatures continued to soar across Europe with Portugal reaching a record for July – hitting 47 degrees."

I was just reading about this today in another context. Here in Canada there is also a leadership race for the Conservative Party going on. I was reading some material from one of the candidates, Leslyn Lewis, talking about net zero emissions. Basically she said, look, I am an environmentalist, I have a degree in environmental science, but this net zero stuff is seriously problematic because of the way it is calculated.

I don't know if KB's perspective is similar, but it wouldn't entirely surprise me. It's worth being careful anyway because there is a tendency for political leaders to jump on certain things as evidence that they are "doing something" when it isn't actually effective.

Here's the link to the piece by Lewis, if you're interested:

Give it a rest @antifascist I'm sure there are some actual fascists somewhere on the internet. But you wouldn't dare bother them, I'm sure. Much more in your comfort zone to try and bully women on here.

Conflictedunicorn · 15/07/2022 22:20

I think net zero would be almost impossible to deliver, especially with the other problems. It would need huge investment in renewable energy, and I can’t see where they would pull the money from if they are to reduce taxes and inflation

yes and making the planet unliveable is just a minor downside.

MangyInseam · 15/07/2022 23:56

Plans that you can't actually implement are rarely effective.

If that is doing well, then I am a toaster.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 16/07/2022 08:05

Being a left winger and picking a horse to back in a Tory leadership race is always a strange business. It’s sort of about harm reduction

actually thats very true

ds1, ds2 and i were discussing who we thought would win/should win and none of us have any intention of voting tory so it was a slightest weird discussion. It was one of those ‘but IF you had to pick one with a gun to your head who would it be?’

achillestoes · 16/07/2022 08:08

I see some people are still using the time-honoured tactic of shouting that everyone is lying and then not actually saying what the lie was.

basilmint · 16/07/2022 08:30

Opinium snap poll put her 4th out of 5. This was a poll of ordinary voters rather than party members though.

What a carnival of horrors. Funny how all the 'left ' Tories bang on about the military and defence . Perhaps to compensate for not being xenophobic in other ways?

Bad Enoch is just as scary as Mordor , albeit more intelligent. I know this sounds like a counsel of despair - but I'm wondering if there are worse things than a corrupt liar with no real principles or ideology?

Bozo's instinct for self preservation could sometimes be useful for us. But the fanatics have no reverse gear.

Is the current Tory party trying to make Enoch Powell look like a moderate?

That would be hard enough to pull off. But they certainly make him look like an intellectual power house.

Floisme · 16/07/2022 09:29

I hope that, when you come back to the thread antifascist, you'll reply to Achilles.

Faffertea · 16/07/2022 09:45

@Conflictedunicorn
Why do you think Rishi Sunak would only be in for a short time?
(genuine question)

If I were still a Tory party member I'd probably go for Rushi Sunak or perhaps Penny Mordaunt for her wonderful savaging of Ian ("I'm just a simple crofter") Blackford, not Kemi Badenoch.

However I do think mocking people's names, in the way Mairi Black did with Jeremy Hunt is the sort of thing playground bullies do.

LK1972 · 16/07/2022 09:55

@Abhannmor Don't you think they were banging on about the military because we're in a proxy, and we'll-supported by the public, war with Russia?

I felt Rishi and Kemi were v bright and personable, unlike others, and spoke a lot of sense on economic policy.

Would be really interested why you think they were all 'a shower of horrors'?

I posted this on another thread, but it's very relevant to this conservation as it's about how Oswald Mosley attracted former suffragettes and previously left wing women.
