'Well sex has to be decided by a separate adult human being (or group) because the fetus or newborn baby is literally incapable of self-identifying their sex. You’re never realistically going to overcome that obstacle. If it’s “observed” instead of “assigned”…yep still done by another person/persons.' I wonder how the animals manage to identify their own/opposite sex without all this careful analysis and recording process carefully designed by an esteemed neuroscientist on this thread, one of the few with the sacred knowledge of how our thought processes actually work.

We are not animals. No idea what you are on about, it’s not like animals in the wild record their births on birth certificates listing their sex.

LK1972 · 01/07/2022 00:34

You will find that humans are, in fact, also animals. And like other animals do not actually require a piece of paper to know what their sex is. Knew well before writing was invented.

You claim assign is correct term for sexing babies, with no evidence whatsoever, except 'I'm pedantic neuroscientist who's cleverer than you' and papers on DSD. You possess no logic and have no argument, why are you here making a fool of yourself, once again?

LK1972 · 01/07/2022 00:37

I genuinely would love to understand your motivation @Discovereads , even though you don't think I understand how thought processes work.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 01/07/2022 01:11

Assigned in this usage merely means a separate person has specified/identified the sex.

which person? Who “assigned” you whatever sex you are at birth?

i was “assigned” female at birth by the doctor AND by the midwife AND by my mother AND by my father- huh, what a weird coincidence that they all assigned me the same thing.

this is exactly why “assigned” is a fucking stupid usage. The “assigner” has nothing to do with what sex you are. Babies who never see a hospital and never get a birth certificate because they are thrown away to die in rubbish bins after birth still have a sex (it’s usually female.)

BoredofthisCrap7 · 01/07/2022 01:13

We ARE actually animals.
If nothing else, this whole debate has proven that we are very much governed by the laws of nature and the natural world the same as every other species on earth.
Probably less intelligent than a lot of other species unfortunately - you don't see them fretting over which ones are male and which ones are female.

Animals are irrelevant. This is a discussion about what to call the process of getting a baby’s sex down on to their birth certificate.

I did provide evidence that assign is the well used, appropriate term for this process. You just don’t like it.

I possess no logic and yet you failed to realise that swapping “assigned at birth” for “observed at birth” will not actually result in your desired outcome at all. I rather think the fools cap is on your head here.

Yes, the adults in the delivery room all make an assessment and assign (specify) what sex you as the baby are. You can hardly do it yourself which is why another person is needed to name your sex as male or female. Of course they all came to the same conclusion…that doesn’t mean “assign” is somehow wrong.

“assigned” isn’t “fucking stupid usage” because it is merely the process of specifying what sex a baby is. Naming something doesn’t change what it is, so of course babies that are murdered still have a sex and btw, it is eventually assigned by the coroner after their lifeless bodies are found.

I’d like to understand your motivation as well. It baffles me that you’d expend do much energy on what is literally tilting at windmills.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 01/07/2022 07:32

I know that all this is word games. Do you know how I know?

Because I have lost count of the number of times I have seen trans activists refer to people they don't know, on sight alone, as AFAB or AMAB. If they really believed any of it, they would say they couldn't possibly know what was on any stranger's birth certificate, unless they'd attended the birth.

But as it is, they look at someone and say instantly, "AFAB". Really, how do you know, eh? Maybe she was "AMAB", surely? Except they know that doesn't happen!

AlisonDonut · 01/07/2022 07:35

I possess no logic

No shit, Sherlock.

Yes it’s all words for the same process.

The thing is no one says they couldn’t possibly know the sex of a person they see/encounter out in public.

So TRAs believe they can tell AFAB or AMAB on sight, which is no different in practice than how GCAs claim that they can with 100% certainty with a quick glance tell whether a person is XX or XY and thus in the correct toilet for their sex.

TRAs were not there at birth so do not actually know what sex was assigned and likewise GCAs don’t have access to a DNA test, so they also do not know. But literally no one says they cannot possibly know and they do the exact same process to decide what sex a person is, they just have different names for it.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 01/07/2022 07:43

swapping “assigned at birth” for “observed at birth” will not actually result in your desired outcome at all.

If the change back was so meaningless, you wouldn't have spent 7 pages arguing against it.

Also there is more than one desired outcome at hand. Assigned at birth is coopted terminology from the care of children born with DSDs/CCSDs. Everytime I see it, I am reminded of how manipulative and disablist some people are, and it is beyond tiresome to be confronted with evidence of some people's selfishness so constantly.

You need to pay attention. Along with stopping using the stolen terminology.

Trans activists say they can't tell.

Also, nice work on trying to bring it back to toilets. Wanna discuss communal changing areas, prisons, or rape crisis counselling?

Can anyone, like ANYONE, tell me which of these lovely college girls is the man in his 50s because I just cannot work it out.

I’m arguing against it because it is meaningless. Because protesting assigned at birth to try and replace it with observed at birth will not “prevent males from deciding they are females” (which is the stated aim of all this). It will have zero effect- as I have explained painstakingly on this thread and others. You know this to be true.

It’s protesting for nothing. A waste of energy. It also makes the GC crowd look far less able at the critical thinking they claim to be adherents of while claiming TRAs aren’t very good at critical thinking. It sinks your level down to the ridiculous by protesting this. But can’t say I’ve not given you fair warning. This is a battle not worth fighting as it is just covering you in shit.

Trans activists say they can't tell

And yet they know just whose 'Speaker's Corner' events to be violent at and which 'people' to be violent towards.

How do they get it right every time? It's like some sort of correlation is not causation type thing going on. Just a sheer coincidence that they manage to attack the females every single time. What are the chances eh?

AlisonDonut · 01/07/2022 07:56

Discovereads · 01/07/2022 07:54

Oh so you think there are people with two different sexes there? Or more? Sexes being plural?

Crikey that is transphobic. Cancel yourself.

NotBadConsidering · 01/07/2022 07:56

Discovereads this is the second thread you’ve spouted nonsense about “assigned”.

The fact that you don’t see this destruction of language as important is in no way a persuasive argument as to why the rest of us should buy your spurious explanations of what the words observed and assigned me. It IS a battle worth fighting because FACTS matter.

DialSquare · 01/07/2022 08:01

I said this on the other thread. It just doesn't make sense. And it doesn't make sense to the majority of people not matter how much sneering discovereads does about it.

Yeah, sure there's not.

What next? You don't believe in cultural appropriation? Think it's okay for people to people to claim native american ancestry they don't have, maybe?

What's that? You do think it's possible to steal words and terminology that isn't yours?

Rightsraptor · 01/07/2022 08:04

@Discovereads you say that no one says they couldn't possibly know the sex of a person they see/encounter out in public.

You are wrong. I, and many others, had a reply from the Ministry of Justice that said precisely this in their response to a petition I'd signed to keep prisons single sex.

I was told that, since it's impossible to tell someone's sex by surface characteristics, the person must be asked and officials must record the answer and act on that.

Any vestige of hope I might have had that the world I live in was still sane evaporated at that point.

Shush, you're arguing from factual reality. Not allowed.
