Apparently Fina's ruling is "not on". Speaking at the British LGBT Awards Daley said: "I was furious. You know, like most queer people, anyone that's told that they can't do something they love just because of who they are, it's not on. It's something I feel really strongly about. Giving trans people the chance to share their side."

No one is stopping trans people competing Tom. Just stopping them from competing unfairly in the wrong sex category. Trans women are free to compete in the male category and will also be in future if sport decides to have an open category.

Should we be surprised at his attitude? Not really, after all he thinks it's OK to rent a woman's body to produce a baby for him and his partner. He seemed to know what sex was then.

I wonder if Tom considered a TW as a surrogate - if not, why not?

achillestoes · 27/06/2022 11:54

Just another man who knows what a woman is when he needs to rent one.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 27/06/2022 11:59

If Tom really wanted to help transwomen swimmers he’d be taking a stand on welcoming them into the male category, making sure they feel comfortable there.

Fluffymule · 27/06/2022 11:59

Tom's career and his medals were never at risk from trans competitors. As a male this never would affect his success in a sport he worked and trained for from being a child.

It appears that Tom has no understanding, respect or empathy for sportswomen. I have no interest in his opinions.

Yep.

I'm disappointed. I've applauded him in the past for being unapologetically proud of being gay. But he has made a misstep on this.

No Tom, they are told they cannot do something because of who they are not-women (the cunty sort) I really struggle with the wilful blindness to see things clearly by people who dont otherwise appear to be thick.

His misogyny becomes more unfettered by the month.

GlitteryGreen · 27/06/2022 12:04

It's just easy for him to say as a man isn't it, because men aren't negatively impacted by transmen joining their sports as they likely would never make it into the team/beat his scores etc.

Imthedamnfoolwhoshothim · 27/06/2022 12:04

He is a man who has proven he is happy to see a woman's body as a commdoity to be used.

I could not care less about any opinion he holds or his feelings on the matter.

DialSquare · 27/06/2022 12:06

Well he's not as fucking furious as many women are that this was ever allowed to happen in the first place. Just another clueless misogynist.

Popsicle33 · 27/06/2022 12:07

He can fuck off back to his knitting. Twat.

He really is becoming an absolute bellend. So glad Emma Raducanu beat him for Sports Personality of the Year

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 27/06/2022 12:08

Well, this is much more likely to influence the public’s opinion on Tom Daley than the public’s opinion on penis people in women’s sports.

Good. Fuck over your legacy, Tom. Maybe people will reconsider their thoughts on surrogacy with the knowledge that you’re a misogynist.

Musomama1 · 27/06/2022 12:10

'anyone that's told they can't do what they want, because of who there are'. Tom Daley, that actually applies to women who can't compete in their sport because they didn't outqualify a biological male. They can't try to compete in any other category.

It also applies to sportswomen who put off having children after their career has peaked - they are 'birthing people' isn't that right? They make no tantrums or entitlement about doing this even though it may risk fertility issues.

TW CAN compete - in the biological men's category, if they qualify. And no-one forces a TW sportsperson to take performance limiting medication.

Misstache · 27/06/2022 12:11

Lia Thomas trained with the woman’s team before she was eligible to compete in the women’s category. No one stopped Thomas from doing that, wearing a woman’s swimsuit, socializing with the team and so forth. Thomas was allowed to do “something she loved.” No one has stopped Thomas from swimming, or even swimming with women. Just from competing.

In Cross Country, only the top 7 compete. Many athletes train and never get a chance to run in the competition. Is that discrimination? There are many gymnasts who never make the lineup over 4 years but still contribute to the team in training. “Bench warmers” exist in every sport and are still part of the team and often are very valuable teammates. LT could have still swum, been part of a team, and supported female teammates competing. It’s not about “doing what you love” it’s about claiming the right to win.

Just wondering (not aimed at any particular poster)

Why is it that the opinion of a medal-winning Olympian who is part of the LGBT community can be dismissed (because he used a surrogate)

But.

Opinions of various misogynists (Boris Johnson, Matt Walsh) can be embraced and separated (by some) from their well-documented bigotry.

RunSeaSurf · 27/06/2022 12:15

Oh do F Off Tom. This ruling will never affect you. Talk about zero empathy. I used to like the guy but what with his surrogacy views and now this he is clearly just another common or garden sexist twit.

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 27/06/2022 12:16

anyone that's told that they can't do something they love just because of who they are

This is the sort of statement you’d expect from a 28 year old white British man (albeit gay, but let’s not pretend that his experiences are in any way related to much older gay men’s experience of overt discrimination - it makes a huge difference) to make. He simply had no idea just how many people don’t get to do things because of who they are. How much structural disadvantage is at work that means most people who aren’t white men don’t get to do the things they live because of who they are.

And, like many people socialised as male, he seems unable to grasp that filling the women’s category with biological men in swimsuits (who can compete as men anyway) IS ensuring that biological women just cannot get the chance to do what they love because of who they are.

His opinion is not being dismissed just because he used a surrogate. It's because he's a misogynist arsehole. As are Johnson and Walsh.

Not sure what your point is?

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 27/06/2022 12:17

“We need to be able to make inclusions for things, to make it able to be more accepting and safe for people.” does Tom not think women are people?
I'm really disappointed. I hope he at least made sure their womb AirB&B wasn't a trafficked women, and that she recieved the full compensation, not a fraction handed down by some dodgy agency.

BootsAndRoots · 27/06/2022 12:17

He strikes me as one of those privileged gay men (who has never faced any discrimination, particularly as his coming out helped boost his career), and sees trans women as previously effeminate gay men, and not (in the case of sport) as heterosexual male chancers.

Ellie56 · 27/06/2022 12:18

Nobody is stopping trans people from competing, Tom. They are just stopping them from competing unfairly.

Just shut up and get on with your knitting, you clueless misogynist twat.

Please could you point me in the direction of some examples of his misogyny?

achillestoes · 27/06/2022 12:20

I don’t dismiss people’s opinions based on their other opinions. Tom could be right about everything else, he could be a genius, and he would still be wrong about this. But by his own actions, he can recognise the limitations and abilities of the two sex classes. So we know he isn’t just a not-genius, he’s a hypocrite.

Clymene · 27/06/2022 12:21

He thinks it's fair for men to compete against women = misogyny.

He has bought a baby from a woman = misogyny
