Andrew Doyle:

"Would you mind clarifying how Julie Bindel's appearance would be in violation of the EDI strategy? The statement does not make this clear.

I'll be covering this on GB News tonight. Would you like to appear as a guest?"

find a venue that agrees with your values

God, not only am I never going to get a reply to 'how does a sex match a gender' but now I have to ask if a building matches an opinion?

Two of them told me I was Julie Burchill, and that they had come to protest her.

I've heard there was a Sue Libraries there too - she's notorious.

WalrusSubmarine · 25/06/2022 19:38

A building where you can sit and read Mein Kampf but not listen to a talk from a feminist.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/06/2022 16:09

She could sue for token damages and the principle.

She said she would.

Interesting. Nottingham Council’s EDI Strategy makes no mention of the sexual assault risks facing women and girls in Nottingham.

It does talk about high profile events in the USA, though. So perhaps the Council prefers to take a more international view of equality issues, rather than a locally focused approach.

just sue libraries, because we have too many of them anyway and they are so generously funded and all. Such a good look (after sueing the equally well endowed rape crisis centre - nods).

You are so dishonest.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/06/2022 20:35

Thanks Thomas. Hopefully that will stop the TRAs using public funding cuts as a stick. I'll dig and the council can decide how much it can afford to spend on defending it.

noraclavicle · 25/06/2022 20:51

sueing the equally well endowed rape crisis centre

Nice Freudian slip there..

There’s a clip of Lucy Masoud being interviewed on the programme in one of the posts on that twitter thread.

www.mynottinghamnews.co.uk/statement-on-aspley-library-event-cancellation/

"Nottingham City Council has cancelled a booking to use a space at Aspley Library for a talk by author Julie Bindel today (Saturday 25 June). This is due to the speaker’s views on trans gender rights being at odds with aspects of the council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy."

puffincino shared the Council’s statement at 10.25 on Saturday morning, it’s on page one or two of this thread.

Catharina

just sue libraries, because we have too many of them anyway and they are so generously funded and all.

If a trans person was discriminated against by a library, would you tell them to take it on the chin?

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 26/06/2022 01:06

Julie was not going to mention trans ideology at all but we could hardly ignore them particularly when they started offering us suncream!

What, did they actually behave like real human beings? Or was the suncream meant as a taunt somehow? (Or was it poisoned?)

It must be the taunt thing? TRAs at a protest acting human is hard to imagine, but I’d like to be wrong!

Ramblingnamechanger · 26/06/2022 01:57

But I bet they will have a drag queen story time to amuse the kids in the summer hols.

TheBiologyStupid · 26/06/2022 02:03

Stupid as well as nasty is a very dangerous combination.

Absolutely - and one very common on the TRA side of the issue.

DdraigGoch · 26/06/2022 02:40

CatherinaJTV · 25/06/2022 16:32

find a venue that agrees with your values? I would not try to run a pro-choice ralley in a Catholic church either.

Well I wouldn't hold an event condemning MVAWG in Chris Brown or Sean Penn's houses. That would be looking for trouble.

I wasn't aware though that libraries were places condoning male violence, as you seem to be saying by comparing them to Catholic churches hosting pro-choice rallies. Mind you, maybe things have changed since I last went to one.

rogdmum · 26/06/2022 07:15

So post #16 covers the statement from Nottingham Council and it’s what we’ve been discussing for the past 4+ pages yet MargaritaPie posts it a few above as though we haven’t seen it. 😂😂😂 I’m convinced Margarita doesn’t bother to read threads, preferring to pop in to randomly tell us all off instead. 😂😂😂

achillestoes · 26/06/2022 07:20

Has the council issued any further comment on their alleged lawbreaking yet?

I’m assuming the council’s legal team don’t work at the weekend so it’ll probably Monday morning before they attempt any damage control.

picklemewalnuts · 26/06/2022 08:26

Is there any update on how the event went?

achillestoes · 26/06/2022 07:20

I suspect that Legal has changed the Twitter password.....

The Council are selling off property and spending public funding that they don't have to keep afloat, and yet continue spending money and staff/ management time to buy an award. Spending on pink washing for points is never going to be just the fee paid for the commercial enterprise.

ThinkingaboutLangClegosaurus · 26/06/2022 08:39

Puffincino · 25/06/2022 10:26

So the council is worried that it might be seen to "implicit support" of a speaker who campaigns on male violence against women.

Well, you mustn’t challenge men on anything these days. If they beat us up, it’s our fault for provoking them.

Can someone tell me when we timeslipped back into the Middle Ages?

lovelyweathertoday · 26/06/2022 08:49

picklemewalnuts · 26/06/2022 08:26

Is there any update on how the event went?

The event went off smoothly in the car park. Obviously, not the easiest place to hear a speaker given that it's on a busy main road.

A small group of trans activists played pop music and danced while Julie Bindel spoke about violence against women.

When she was answering questions a young man decided to walk up and start offering sun cream to the women listening, in a childish attempt to get some attention.

Quite a few people there went on to the Nordic Model Now event in the centre of town. That was harrowing and inspiring at the same time. New feminist connections were made.

Overall an excellent day.

Yeah, we all know it, I think we get a bit 3rd-hand embarrassed for them so just scroll past any redundant posts...
