Are lesbians not allowed a platform during pride month then?

Not those kind of lesbians.

Ramblingnamechanger · 25/06/2022 11:00

Another crowdfunder to come?

Datun · 25/06/2022 11:05

"While it was known that the event was going to be from a feminist perspective, no information around the speaker’s views on transgender rights was brought to the Library Service’s attention.
“Once we became aware of this, we took the decision to cancel the booking.
"

That's discrimination against a protected belief. They can't do it.

Christ, women are going to have to do this one fucking library at a time, aren't they?

Thelnebriati · 25/06/2022 11:08

They can do it; its illegal but they can do it and there's very little we can do about it. That's the problem with the current legislation.
Unless EHRC decide that a local council is a big enough problem for them to step in.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/06/2022 11:08

Yes so as I remembered Leeds Council did the same to WPUK in 2018. They complained and there was lots of back and forth but eventually they did get to hold a meeting there in late 2019.

Bookwest · 25/06/2022 11:10

I could probably get to this if my son's football would just hurry up and finish 🤦🏻‍♀️

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 11:12

She can take legal action herself.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/06/2022 11:12

It's not about EHRC stepping in individually I don't think. She would need to bring a legal discrimination case against the council/library as a service provider. This is exactly the same as any other alleged discrimination on the grounds of race, disability etc.

www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/discrimination/taking-action-about-discrimination/what-do-you-need-to-show-the-court-in-a-discrimination-claim/

Thelnebriati · 25/06/2022 11:16

I suggested EHRC step in because there's a wider institutional issue with the council, who are taking their advice from Stonewall and not The Equality Act.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/06/2022 11:18

Yes, but as someone who has been discriminated against she has the right to bring a claim in the civil courts under the EA. So that is something she could do.

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 11:18

I’ve rarely seen such a clear-cut discrimination case. They even wrote a confession and the Deputy Leader of Nottingham City Council doubled down under the statement with a tweet. Bindel would be mad to let this open goal slip by.

rogdmum · 25/06/2022 11:31

This is amazing. Absolutely amazing. They actually set out their case for discrimination in writing, and not just in writing but in writing on a major social media platform for the world to see.

Amazing. I really hope Julie Bindel takes action. 😁

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 11:32

It’s almost like they’re not smart.

It's just perfect isn't it. Please please let her sue.

Signalbox · 25/06/2022 11:35

I'm assuming this wasn't run past their law department before being published. 😂

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 12:47

Julie Bindel just posted on Twitter that the event went ahead in the street.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 25/06/2022 13:03

Is she taking legal action? Bindel is a citizen and a customer. This is a simple breach of the Equality Act 2010, very easy to put right.

AND they’ve said in their statement that they did it because of their EDI policy, which is very Stonewalled. The links seem more straightforward than Allison’s case.

I had a look to see if anyone has ever FOI’d them about Stonewall, but nothing came up.

LunaLights · 25/06/2022 13:09

I’m assuming it is all archived, as I’m sure the lawyers will read and get it deleted…

So do I. It's a slamdunk. I would contribute immediately.

It would stop other councils from doing the same.

Puffincino · 25/06/2022 10:25

So here's the council's statement in full, tweeted out on the @mynottingham account (not the library Twitter)

"Nottingham City Council has cancelled a booking to use a space at Aspley Library for a talk by author Julie Bindel today (Saturday 25 June). This is due to the speaker’s views on trans gender rights being at odds with aspects of the council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
Nottingham City Council Deputy Leader Cllr Adele Williams and Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Safety & Inclusion Cllr Neghat Khan said:
“This was a private booking at Aspley Library by the ‘Nottingham Women for Change’ group and all ticket sales and marketing of the event had been undertaken independently with no input from the council.
“While it was known that the event was going to be from a feminist perspective, no information around the speaker’s views on transgender rights was brought to the Library Service’s attention.
“Once we became aware of this, we took the decision to cancel the booking. Nottingham is an inclusive city and as a council we support our LGBT community and have committed to supporting trans rights as human rights through Stonewall. We did not want the use of one of our library buildings for this event, taking place during Pride month, to be seen as implicit support for views held by the speaker which fly in the face of our position on transgender rights.”

Wow.

I’d seen a tweet about the sound you can hear is feminist lawyers getting out their highlighter pens and wondered what it was about.

So Nottingham Council doesn’t bother to keep up to date with employment tribunal findings then. Or indeed EHRC guidance. Reassuring for their staff.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/06/2022 13:35

Good for Julie and the Nottingham Resisters. I hope it didn't rain.

Sorry, Nottingham Women for Change.

LoobiJee · 25/06/2022 13:42

I’ve just looked at their EDI Strategy. I went straight to their list of protected characteristics.

One of them was incorrect.

They have replaced “pregnancy and maternity” with “maternity and paternity”.

They’ve removed pregnancy as a protected characteristic and replaced it with paternity.

Unbelievable.

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 13:44

Rumoured on Twitter that she will sue them based on what she said in her talk.

Imnobody4 · 25/06/2022 13:46

Julie Bindel has said at her talk today that she will sue Nottingham City Council for banning her talk in Aspley Library

Good - am ready for some serious gardening.
