Julie Bindel has said at her talk today that she will sue Nottingham City Council for banning her talk in Aspley Library

Good - am ready for some serious gardening.

Same. And I hope they don't cave before it hits the headlines.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/06/2022 13:52

That's great. I will certainly be supporting any crowdfunder.

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 13:53

It’s too late for them to cave, isn’t it? The event has already happened in the car park. The detriment has happened.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/06/2022 13:53

Ditto. These clueless numpties will only pay attention if it hits them in the wallet and the ballot box.

Yes, you're right.

just sue libraries, because we have too many of them anyway and they are so generously funded and all. Such a good look (after sueing the equally well endowed rape crisis centre - nods).

WalrusSubmarine · 25/06/2022 14:30

A feminist unable to speak to women about male violence against women in a library because she has said things that some people (particularly males) don’t agree with previously.

A lesbian banned from speaking during Pride month. In a city that was the first to bring in measures against misogyny. A day after the US repealed Roe vs Wade. Women unable to gather and debate as a sex based group.

Optics not great Nottingham!

It's really quite simple. If they don't want to (or can't afford to) be sued for discrimination, then they shouldn't discriminate and then post a confession on their website and Twitter.

Discriminating against a woman who is talking about male violence against women is what's not a good look here.

Perhaps you lot can stop harassing the venues where women gather to speak, how is that for an idea?

You got a problem with reading? Julie Bindel is suing Nottingham City Council, places wouldn't be sued if they upheld the Equality Act so on their own heads be it.

Don't be silly. I am not a lawyer but I assume the case would be against the council and possibly the named councillors who made the decision. If they chose to ignore or not seek legal advice, that's their problem.

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 14:46

‘just sue libraries, because we have too many of them anyway and they are so generously funded and all. Such a good look (after sueing the equally well endowed rape crisis centre - nods).’

They should be much more careful about how they manage their funding. Not discriminating against people would help.

I’ve just looked at their EDI Strategy. I went straight to their list of protected characteristics.

One of them was incorrect.

They have replaced “pregnancy and maternity” with “maternity and paternity”.

They’ve removed pregnancy as a protected characteristic and replaced it with paternity.

Unbelievable.

That's a new one to keep a look out for.

rogdmum · 25/06/2022 14:51

Good grief. At least two of them didn’t even know who they were protesting…

”The misogynists that succeeded in persuading the library to cancel my talk. Two of them told me I was Julie Burchill, and that they had come to protest her Stupid as well as nasty is a very dangerous combination.”

Was the talk a gender critical themed one?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/06/2022 15:01

No. As the rest of us know because we followed the links given. She was talking about VAWG.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 25/06/2022 15:04

Janice Turner on the case too now

bigotted councillors, who'd have thought it?

The information is in the tweet in the OP. She was invited to speak on male violence.

I would be doubtful if Nottingham City Council could afford any sort of legal case considering their current dire financial situation.

I'm sure Stonewall could foot the bill for them
