Twitter currently ablaze with suggestions that Adele is 'ter*y' for saying 'I love being a woman'.

' ... just the use of the word female with the way it was stressed could be easy misinterpreted.'

This is where we are, people. Have you now or have you ever stressed the word 'female' in a way that could be 'easy misinterpreted'? Because if so, we're going to need to check your thinking.

'Collecting the award for best artist, Adele said: “I understand why they changed the name of this award [from best female/male artist], but I really love being a woman, I really love being a female artist.”'

Was waiting for someone to start this thread!!

'Adele appeared to wade into the debate over gender identity last night'

To be fair, she may not have meant to 'wade into' anything. But as plenty of other women know, in the end the debate will be brought to you whether you like it or not. One wee slip of the tongue, one use of the word 'female' or 'woman' will raise questions.

StopStartStop · 09/02/2022 11:11

I hope she meant it.

'The winner of the Brits' first-ever genderless award for overall artist of the year added: "I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist. I'm really proud of us."

Brit Awards announce first gender-neutral nominees

The move attracted some criticism from figures including Piers Morgan and Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries - who said she was concerned about how the new system "would work in terms of fair gender representation".

In the end, more women were nominated than at any time in the past decade, and female artists or female-fronted bands won two-thirds of the awards.'

If your movement depends on women never being able to say they like being a woman, you have to think a little bit about it.

Really irks me that there are people who call themselves feminist for whom this witch hunt will not cause the slightest concern.

purpleboy · 09/02/2022 11:14

You just knew though that females would be over represented this year. It's a great strategy to make sure anyone critical of the move can be shot down with "the proof" that it hasn't affect women at all.
Let's see where we are in 5-10 years.

ANewCreation · 09/02/2022 11:16

I imagine next year will look different...

BraveBananaBadge · 09/02/2022 11:17

That thread is absolutely hilarious though Grin

Hestyo · 09/02/2022 11:18

Bla bla biological essentialism bla terf dogwhistle bla gcse understanding of sex bla privileged cis white woman bla.

RVN123 · 09/02/2022 11:18

Just wait for the grovelling backtracking to start.
There's no way Adele, at the height of her career, is going to come out and say something that could potentially have her cancelled and singled out by the TRAs.
There will be a statement qualifying that she didn't mean it like that, that TW are TW etc etc ad nauseum.

She's not going to do a JKR to herself.

HoodieHoodie · 09/02/2022 11:21

I agree @RVN123

I’ll have so much respect for her if she sticks to her guns! There’s nothing wrong at all with saying she loves being a woman.

ScreamingMeMe · 09/02/2022 11:22

Wait, I thought nobody was trying to stop us from referring to ourselves as women? Hmm

Hestyo · 09/02/2022 11:26

I think it's equating female and woman they don't like, since they're busy building a brave new world out of mangled language, where women can have cocks, prostates and XY chromosomes.

No , nobody's trying to stop transwomen from referring to themselves as women. That's fine, stunning and brave. It's the other kind of women who need to sit down and educate themselves and mostly just shut up.
WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/02/2022 11:29

Yup, I cheered when she said that!

FOJN · 09/02/2022 11:30

Loving this response to OhHeyJacob.

"Trans women were women until #Adele said she was proud to be a woman. All of a sudden, the LGBTQ community doesn't acknowledge trans women as women that can be included in her pride. Interesting."

There are days when I feel, "fuck off until you can make logical sense", is an entirely appropriate response to the whole gender nonsense.

DomesticatedZombie · 09/02/2022 11:31

Yes, that 'in the end' is pretty disingenuous, isn't it? Einmal ist keinmal.

But, but, but trans women are allowed to say they are women and love being a woman. Eg in the Pantene/Paris Lees ad.

Of course; that's because they don't have 'c*s privilege' like all the basic bitches/uterus-havers/menstruators.

I don't know. I watched the whole clip and she was done with her speech which was about being an artist. She was ready to walk away and she stopped and said, "Also" before saying she loved being a woman and a female artist. Then followed it by saying, "I do, I do."

It looked to me like she knew what she was saying, had thought about it in advance but wasn't 100% certain she would say it if she did win and decided before she walked off, that she was going to go for it. And when it got the big cheer, she doubled down with the emphatic, I dos.

Whether or not she will hold in the face of a backlash or if she has her PR people pushing her to pull back I don't know. I do think she knew exactly what she was saying and why she was saying it. She just might not know just how bad the backlash could have the potential to become and it might scare her or her people. Having said it, though, she'll be better off not pulling back as we all know, there is no forgiveness from the most hardline for any kind of wrong think.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 09/02/2022 11:40

Adele's music makes me want to rip my ears off and shove them in a blender... but I'm pleased to see she's seemingly... taking a very tentative stand. But as the previous poster pointed out, I'm absolutely expecting a backtrack and "clarification" message to be put out by her any minute now....

Whatsnewpussyhat · 09/02/2022 11:42

I like adele but I do think she will grovel to the TRA mob.

DomesticatedZombie · 09/02/2022 11:45

I'm willing her to be her best self.

Adele
