Twitter currently ablaze with suggestions that Adele is 'ter*y' for saying 'I love being a woman'.

twitter.com/OhHeyJacob/status/1491171825019396100

' ... just the use of the word female with the way it was stressed could be easy misinterpreted.'

This is where we are, people. Have you now or have you ever stressed the word 'female' in a way that could be 'easy misinterpreted'? Because if so, we're going to need to check your thinking.

Fed up with seeing Adele on tv etc but admire her for this and hope she doesn't backtrack too.

bishophaha · 13/02/2022 23:55

Ben Butterworth is the person who identified as Black for an NHS LGBT conference, isn't he?

BraveBananaBadge · 14/02/2022 00:04

@MargaritaPie

"The quote about 'identifying as women' is another one that could be taken whichever way really"

I would presume she is implying that in her view those who identify as women [i.e. transwomen] are women?

Assume and imply what you like, it doesn't make it so. She could have said anyone who identifies as a bloody duck and it would have got a cheer.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/02/2022 00:08

He said that he had a black stepmother to justify it, IIRC.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 14/02/2022 07:05

"Adele just turned up on stage at G-A-Y to stick two fingers up to every transphobe who misinterpreted her words at the Brits and told the crowd: ‘You’re all women who identify as women."

Looking forward to seeing a video clip of Adele saying that, given we have the video clips of Adele telling a woman that she fucking loves females at the same event.

WarriorN · 14/02/2022 07:07

That's his interpretation. She's not used the word transphobe at all.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 14/02/2022 07:19

I haven’t seen a video clip of Adele saying “You’re all women who identify as women", just reports of people saying that she said it.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 14/02/2022 07:22

That piece in The Independent was written by someone who describes themselves as a video games reporter.

So you think that a video games reporter third hand reporting some Twitter comment about transphobes without any actual corroboration is a bastion of journalism?

Probably why they’re not actually working for a proper newspaper.

@fridgepants

Your implication is that reporting on video games = not a proper journo.
He might be great reporting on video games but he’s not reporting on video games, is he?

He’s reporting a second hand Twitter comment with no corroboration.

Enough4me · 15/02/2022 00:00

I thought I read that the person who said Adele said words to the effect that anyone can be a woman deleted their original tweet.
Wondering if anyone knows if this was confirmed?

youvegottenminuteslynn · 15/02/2022 00:15

Wait so if TRAs say Trans Women are Women then why would her saying she loves being a woman be offensive?

They are the people who compel others to say that Trans Women are Women so to say that her comment alienates Trans Women is surely saying that Trans Women aren't women... the very belief they say is offensive and literal violence.

So the logic is basically natal women can't comment on anything using the word women unless the comment is verbatim 'trans women are women' or they are transphobic? But TRAs or trans women can use the word woman to describe the experience of trans women?

Don't they get tired of being hypocritical? Aren't they embarrassed that logic is apparently absent from their arguments?

Ffs. So sick of this absolutely clear cut bullying of women.

And if you can’t read my attachment, here is the text

“Because they’ve had an unmoderated cess pool called Mumsnet radicalising them for years. Go in looking for how to get your kid to eat more carrots, come out a raging transphobe.”

I think so - the screenshot someone posted earlier in this thread seems to have disappeared.

Yes, pretty much that's exactly what happened to me, although I would not use the phrase 'raging transphobe.'

More like, the harms that hastily thought out and implemented policies were actually bringing to children, women and the trans community were actually being named, discussed and evidence was being presented as it should have been from the start.

rabbitwoman · 15/02/2022 06:57

..... and Adele herself has not said anything to confirm, deny or clarify her statements and there must be a reason for that, but I sure hope she has scheduled in a gin and tonic with jk Rowling in the next few weeks....

NitroNine · 15/02/2022 08:01

Oh bless their little cotton socks.

I do genuinely feel sorry for anyone who believes they are at genuine threat of the formation of an “anti-trans Gestapo”. The distress & confusion they must experience trying to navigate the world as a result of truly believing there are people advocating for this must be dreadful. The fact someone was willing to i. affirm that delusion rather than do ANYTHING appropriate in response & ii. claim that supposedly the women of FWR are the ones agitating for the creation of this “anti-trans gestapo” is revolting. It shows no care for the individual who apparently believes themselves at such risk; no respect for the victims of actual Gestapo (& those who still mourn them) including the sufferers of intergenerational trauma; and it potentially puts women - specifically, mothers - at risk, should there be an escalation to violence.

Poor MN though: your failure to utterly capitulate regarding FWR means that despite having stricter moderation rules for this part of the site (even creating the separate Naughty Corner!) you are accused of being unmoderated - & by implication, letting the transphobia positively flow forth.

(How is it, incidentally, that people apparently so aware of FWR’s existence are somehow so unaware its demography is NOT “white middle-class mums”? There’s nothing wrong with being any or all of those things & “mum” is often also a shop assistant or manager/teacher/HCP/gardener/dancer/bus driver/cleaner/research scientist/painter - or [formerly] employed in pretty much any field there is out there with associated transferable skills. People running in to screenshot things for Twitter - and to endlessly mither at MNHQ - can’t possibly miss ALL the discussions that demonstrate, over & over, that they’re chatting bubbles when it comes to the [massively sexist] tropes they use when trying to dismiss anything & everything said here, can they?)

Odd, too, as there's footage of her whole night on there, pole dancing and onstage. Almost as if that quote was entirely made up.

I expect Adele's friends were ecstatic and supportive too. You could see she was really exasperated by winning an award, which didn't acknowledge her sex but would have before, when she loves her sex.

Plus why not love your sex, has any man been punished for saying they love being a man?

Comparing much-needed investigation and lively, intelligent discussion of the issues with the actions of the Gestapo shows that this particular writer is “of very small brain” and lacks credibility.
TheCurrywurstPrion · 15/02/2022 09:48

Man is widely considered the default, and therefore naturally being a man is assumed to be better. It’s brave to say you like being a woman: ie the ‘secondary sex’. No man is likely to be punished for saying they love being one as they would feel no need to say it. Indeed men who don’t want to be men often appear to be regarded with a degree of perplexity, coupled with strong sympathy and protectiveness.

supposedly the women of FWR are the ones agitating for the creation of this “anti-trans gestapo”

Judge Knowles appeared to believe that the Harry Miller case rather demonstrated that the jackboot might be on the other foot, so to speak.
