Twitter currently ablaze with suggestions that Adele is 'ter*y' for saying 'I love being a woman'.

twitter.com/OhHeyJacob/status/1491171825019396100

' ... just the use of the word female with the way it was stressed could be easy misinterpreted.'

This is where we are, people. Have you now or have you ever stressed the word 'female' in a way that could be 'easy misinterpreted'? Because if so, we're going to need to check your thinking.

Agree with others and predict the mantra coming soon...

But I hope to fuck she doesn't apologize for saying she loves being a woman and a female artist!

DappledThings · 09/02/2022 12:04

The really ridiculous and infuriating thing is that as soon as I heard that quote on the radio this morning I knew there would be someone on Twitter making that claim of her being a TERF/transphobic blah blah. It was my first thought and I hate that it was.

Even a couple of years ago I don't think that would have been the case. Or may be I just wasn't as tuned into the insanity then as I am now.

crazyjinglist · 09/02/2022 12:05

Riiiight. So, you're allowed to say you love being a woman... as long as you are actually male. In fact, it probably means you're stunning and brave. But if an actual woman says she loves being a woman, she's a vile, transphobic terf. Gotcha. Makes perfect sense Hmm

teawamutu · 09/02/2022 12:19

I also fully expect her to capitulate. Which is a real shame because she's the musical equivalent of JKR; richer than God, massive following, quite possibly too big to cancel.

lapasion · 09/02/2022 12:20

Poor Adele. She already got tonnes of abuse from certain corners of Twitter for daring to lose weight. I’m guessing there’s a lot of overlap between the ‘Adele is encouraging fatphobia’ and ‘Adele is a terf for saying female’ crowd. Same energy.

allmywhat · 09/02/2022 12:34

If Adele ends up grovelling to the TRA mob for saying “I love being a woman” then GOOD. She doesn’t deserve their bullshit of course, but that would be another large audience exposed to what they’re like. And often women grovel at first and then come back fighting, even JKR did.

Are they making a big deal of it though? I’ve only seen a few Tweets.

LilithOfEden · 09/02/2022 13:04

Thought this was a very interesting interview about when people are too big to be cancelled (e.g. JKR, Adele) so instead are put in a "silo".

I'm sure most TRAs don't care much. But the atmosphere that has been created by genderism has made it such that a woman mentioning her sex is a 'dog whistle' that requires attention. There is effectively a 'hostile atmosphere' for women out there at the moment, whether its TRAs driving it or just contributing to it alongside standard MRAs, misogynists etc.

And there is certainly comment on whether women are 'allowed' to talk about themselves as women, or whether they tend to do it wrong when they do:

twitter.com/Sam_Adeleine/status/1491393682968576002

'The ironic thing is that trans women at least are way more likely to understand what it means to “celebrate being a woman”, while TERFs only seem to talk about womanhood as a source of pain.'

Well she's gained another fan right here.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/02/2022 13:43

I've never heard her music and I hate being a woman because of what it means in patriarchy and, quite frankly, I'd like a less compromised body, but I hope she meant what she said and does not back down.

BattyOrange · 09/02/2022 13:54

@WhereAreWeNow

Well she's gained another fan right here.
And another one here too - with the caveat that fandom can and will be withdrawn if she backtracks and apologises. I'm really hoping she doesn't do that.
bonfireheart · 09/02/2022 14:03

The reaction and cheating from the audience when she said it was great too.

Polly99 · 09/02/2022 14:10

I had a look on Twitter and could only find that one tweet posted in the OP accusing Adele of being a TERF. Literally every other tweet I've seen has been a response saying how ridiculous it is that a woman can't use the word "woman" without causing issues. But it's being reported as though every beardy wokebro is having a mantrum. Am I missing a lot of tweets or is this a mountain being made out of a tiny molehill?

candycane222 · 09/02/2022 14:11

Jacob is protecting his tweets now so maybe the response hasn't been 100% positive?

TonyThreePies · 09/02/2022 14:13

@RVN123

Just wait for the grovelling backtracking to start. There's no way Adele, at the height of her career, is going to come out and say something that could potentially have her cancelled and singled out by the TRAs. There will be a statement qualifying that she didn't mean it like that, that TW are TW etc etc ad nauseum.

She's not going to do a JKR to herself.

Pretty much what I came on here to say.

I agree. And I think with "allies" like Jacob, who needs enemies?
Beamur · 09/02/2022 14:41

I thought she was pretty brave to say this. There was a slight breathlessness to her voice as she did, which I think was out of knowing she was sticking her neck out at the first gender neutral Brit awards to say out loud she was proud about being a woman and a female artist. Like JRK this is a pro- woman, feminist statement. It's not anti-anyone. I hope she sticks by this. It's essential that being pro- women is not by default considered to be an aggressive statement.

blingblangbling · 09/02/2022 15:14

You really need to stop looking at Twitter, it's full of trolls and clickbait. 99% of it is nonsense.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 09/02/2022 15:15

From the Times article:

The change was in part a response to Sam Smith, a non-binary former Brits winner who pointed out in 2021 that they were not eligible for best male or female.

Has Sam Smith invented themself a whole new sex?

Abhannmor · 09/02/2022 15:27

@WhatATimeToBeAlive

Yup, I cheered when she said that!
The whole crowd cheered...especially the women!

www.mailplus.co.uk/edition/comment/153022/adele.-theres-nothing-transphobic-about-saying-youre-proud-to-be-a-woman

'For me, the big reveal of the Adele speech is how much women, in particular feminists, have been curtailed in using sex specific language, and expressing pride in who we are. '

Well, the singing wasn't working out, so got to respect the attempt to try something new.

Leilala · 09/02/2022 15:57

I have seen a few comments in other threads about people saying they are too old for this. I’m young and also don’t have a clue.

I have no idea what it means to be a woman or female or what ever else it is now called? Those who have uteri? HmmConfused

I’m just worried about accidentally offending someone.

Walks away (on eggshells) Confused

Exactly, just been for a look and it seems like just this one tweet - if there's any more they certainly are few and far between and hard to find!
Just seems to be people saying how ridiculous it all is and piling onto this one
