Twitter currently ablaze with suggestions that Adele is 'ter*y' for saying 'I love being a woman'.

twitter.com/OhHeyJacob/status/1491171825019396100

' ... just the use of the word female with the way it was stressed could be easy misinterpreted.'

This is where we are, people. Have you now or have you ever stressed the word 'female' in a way that could be 'easy misinterpreted'? Because if so, we're going to need to check your thinking.

@FOJN

Loving this response to OhHeyJacob.

"Trans women were women until #Adele said she was proud to be a woman. All of a sudden, the LGBTQ community doesn't acknowledge trans women as women that can be included in her pride. Interesting."

There are days when I feel, "fuck off until you can make logical sense", is an entirely appropriate response to the whole gender nonsense.

Absolutely this. It's the TRAs that are the most vocal about the difference between trans women and women, when they feel cross about it (or cross about something, or cross about anything, I don't know what they're cross about this time as it makes no logical sense).
headintheproverbial · 09/02/2022 16:58

I don't understand why it's not ok for Adele to say she loves being a woman but inevitably a trans woman could say that and obvs expect it to stand. So we've come to a place where only men are entited to say they are women?!

bishophaha · 09/02/2022 17:01

@EeeICouldRipATissue

had a look on Twitter and could only find that one tweet posted in the OP accusing Adele of being a TERF. Literally every other tweet I've seen has been a response saying how ridiculous it is that a woman can't use the word "woman" without causing issues. But it's being reported as though every beardy wokebro is having a mantrum. Am I missing a lot of tweets or is this a mountain being made out of a tiny molehill? Exactly, just been for a look and it seems like just this one tweet - if there's any more they certainly are few and far between and hard to find! Just seems to be people saying how ridiculous it all is and piling onto this one
There are literally replies to that 'one' tweet that say "I know what you mean" and "why did she need to mention it", so I don't really believe that you looked very hard at all. Even clicking on that one tweet would've showed you those replies.

Again, it's the dishonesty I can't abide.

Slothtoes · 09/02/2022 17:06

I love that she’s said this. Sunlight!
It makes it so obvious that women can’t talk about womanhood, not even in the most innocuous way, without being screamed at and cancelled for not centreing men.

Women are under siege. In plain sight. Thank you for showing that so clearly to millions of people, Adele.

Yes, I know, I meant it only seems to be this tweet, Jacob's tweet, there really didn't seem to be loads of people saying it like it's being made out.

ShowOfHands · 09/02/2022 17:09

I am quite surprised that the press is making such a huge thing of it based on one thread on twitter.

ShowOfHands · 09/02/2022 17:10

I mean given the things they could be covering in relation to this whole fucking mess, they're focusing in one tiny thing.

Are you kidding? They bloody love a pile-on! Famous woman, "woke" people, someone sticking the boot in - it's what the press was made for... Hmm Grin
SunnyDelite · 09/02/2022 17:35

I, too, love being a woman, and I loved hearing that Adele loves it too. I absolutely saw it as Adele embracing the female sex :) And I loved the big cheers from the crowd...

DontLikeCrumpets · 09/02/2022 17:38

@DomesticatedZombie That more females were nominated this year than other years sounds like a conniving marketing strategy to dampen criticism, a way to avoid the tsunami of anger in wake of the Lia Thomas win.

PostingForTheFirstTime · 09/02/2022 17:43

I hope she never makes the mistake of referring to herself as a mother.

DontLikeCrumpets · 09/02/2022 17:45

@PleasantBirthday "nobody's trying to stop transwomen from referring to themselves as women. That's fine, stunning and brave. It's the other kind of women who need to sit down and educate themselves and mostly just shut up."

Grin That is brilliant summation. Pithy, witty and absolutely spot on.

You should explain this to the New York Post which has been tweeting about it, and ran an article about Adele in their page six section.

MMAMPWGHAP · 09/02/2022 18:14

Not a fan of hers but if it kicks off big time against her I’ll be downloading her back catalogue.

Blackandwhitehorse · 09/02/2022 18:16

I wouldn’t say there’s really been a backlash (yet)

I think it’s more women are just so relieved to hear Adele say that, without then spouting TWAW, non binary people are valid - it’s not that common now for a woman to say what she did. I think the TRAs won’t push this.

TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder · 09/02/2022 18:24

@candycane222

Jacob is protecting his tweets now so maybe the response hasn't been 100% positive?
Oh dear, shame. His bio also proclaims he is a ‘staunch feminist’ Hmm
secular111 · 09/02/2022 18:29

I thought October and November last year were the worst for the TRA's.

Yet this might trump all of the self-inflicted disasters of those months. What a fabulous own goal, and all provoked by Jacob. Perhaps not really fair that he should take all of the praise himself, but I can't imagine he'll be back on Twitter for a while, and if he does return, the TRA's will be out for revenge on him.

Wow that Page Six link

“Who’d have thought Adele was a transphobe and would use her platform to call for the destruction of the trans community. Especially the confused teenagers,” another long-time Twitter user posted.

Did she give a whole other speech somewhere? I just saw a woman loving being a woman.

DomesticatedZombie · 09/02/2022 18:44

Debbie Hayton in the Spectator:

'girls need role models and last night Adele stepped up to the plate. For that, she deserves applause, even greater than the adulation she received for her music.'

And this is how the WP publicised that article.

To be fair that tweet was sarcasm. But that clearly by passed the NYT page six column.
Ablababla · 09/02/2022 20:24

How on earth could her statement be interpreted to have anything at all to do with the trans debate? I genuinely don’t understand. She’s proud of being a woman. Why not take that statement at face value?

@ShowOfHands

I am quite surprised that the press is making such a huge thing of it based on one thread on twitter.
Half the news nowadays is just reporting on crap people have said online. Whether it’s a ‘Twitter storm’ ie two tweets, a Mumsnet thread or the Reddit AITA page, there’s nothing too petty for them to report on.
