Also there is the small matter that the name is trademarked be Warner brothers.

But who knew? I certainly had no idea there were to US Quidditch leagues running around with broomsticks between there legs!

@MargaritaPie

Well one of the is the snitch. Presumably he doesn’t have a broom.

Datun · 21/12/2021 05:51

@FannyCann

Radio 2 just had this on the news and it was very biased- sounded like JKR against transgender people

*JellySaurus
Matt Bateman, president of QuidditchUK, said it fully supported the change. “We cannot continue to call ourselves quidditch and be associated with JK Rowling while she continues to make damaging and hateful comments against the many transgender athletes, staff and volunteers who call this sporting community home,” he said.

Hasn't he just defamed JKR? What a prat.
Sounds like defamation to me. I hope he gets a solicitors letter from her.*

I just know there will be a bold fail when I post this so apologies in advance.

Anyway,I hope JKR'S lawyers are having a busy and profitable Christmas.

In general I think her policy (as far as one can guess what her policy is, given that these things are likely subject to NDA's and go under the radar) of not being seen to be particularly litigious but occasionally going after the odd particularly egregious case (usually someone with a lot of followers) is a good one. However this latest salvo by the TRAs is producing lots of much repeated defamation. I think she should knock it on the head and I hope she does.

Yes, she appears strategic in her litigation. I hope she does something in this case.

Did he defame her on the radio? Because if so is the BBC under an obligation to publicise the fact that it's defamatory?

FixItUpChappie · 21/12/2021 05:59

are there seriously grown adults hopping around with brooms between their legs "playing quidditch"?

Right?! 😂😂

In all seriousness though I HATE this cultural moment

ScreamingMeMe · 21/12/2021 08:20

@igivein

Only just seen this thread, but I’ve been chuckling all day at the tweet that described them as ‘sad knobs on broomsticks’, which, if you’re old enough to remember the film, is just genius Grin
Ha ha ha! Grin
MatildaIThink · 21/12/2021 08:23

TransBall?
SnitchBall?

Triphazards · 21/12/2021 08:48

@ErrolTheDragon

I'm sure they could come up with a name from permutations of the various synonyms of 'quid' and 'ditch'. Plugdump? Poundtrench?

Nickerdrain?

PatriotCanes · 21/12/2021 08:55

'Sad knobs on broomsticks' and even Marg is Hmm This thread has it all Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/12/2021 08:59

@Moolia

Wondering how close this is to hate speech? Villifying someone for their protected belief.
Can you expand?
Datun · 21/12/2021 09:00

"Sad knobs on broomsticks" is genius 😂

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/12/2021 09:08

@MargaritaPie

I'm not going to comment on the trans-discussion here, but are there seriously grown adults hopping around with brooms between their legs "playing quidditch"?
It does indeed beggar belief Xmas Grin
tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/12/2021 09:11

I love when they play it on The Internship and Owen Wilson's response to the Golden Snitch making an appearance -

"Who the F*#k is this guy?!" Grin

🤣🤣😆

I loved that film when I was a kid so I’ve just been down a rabbit hole reminiscing. Angela Lansbury is still alive, bless her and she’s 96! Bedknobs and Broomsticks was released in 1971, which means she was only 46 when it came out! In my mind as a kid she was an old lady like my nan 🤔. Maybe it’s because when I watched it, Murder, She Wrote had just started and she was a bit older. Anyway, what a legend.

This is another example of click-bait-and-switch.

If you read these articles it's clear that Warner Brothers owning the Copywrite to the name 'Quidditch' is far more likely to be responsible for the need for a name change than JKR's objectional beliefs.

The media knows that by overhyping the possibility that JKR's unhelpful statements may be the reason behind a certain decision will whip all of the Gender Critters into a froth and drive much more traffic to their website then if they just focused on the more likely explination.

EsmaCannonball · 21/12/2021 10:46

From Garbo and Dietrich to Bowie and Bolan, the old school gender rule- breakers were all about grown-up glamour and sexiness. Why is such a significant chunk of the modern-day gender identity crowd determined to live life in nursery school? I'm not just talking about the grown men who want to wear nappies or who like to identify as little girls, I'm talking about the young adults who want to remain in the world of rainbows and glitter and unicorns and wizards. I see these people everywhere in young, middle-class circles. A desire for lifelong infancy seems to go hand in hand with a nasty Maoist approach to any person who disagrees with them. It's sinister.

This interests me too but it’s not just the middle classes. I worked with a colleague (in her forties) who would get excited about things like her new unicorn pencil case, Hello Kitty lunch box and Harry Potter wallpaper. Others too. It’s rife.

Yes, copyright issues have been mentioned many times on this thread alone, in particular that JKR's 'objectionable' views (I.e. rational and reality based views, shared by the majority of the population) are a useful hook for zealots to have a tantrum and yet another go at JKR.

Stamp, stamp, stamp 'Warner Bros are so meeeaaan! We want to use a copyrighted concept without paying the money or giving credit' is what it comes down to but sounds like toddlers having a tantrum.

The 'gender critters' (do you mean gender critical?) see it for what it is. A toddler tantrum. JRK is just being used as a useful scapegoat.

So what is his role? Runs around with a golden ball dangling between his legs?

DialSquare · 21/12/2021 11:46

Pissing myself at "sad nobs on broomsticks"!

DialSquare · 21/12/2021 11:48

knobs obviously. Bloody phone.

Gaaaah apologies my reply was to wrong post Confused

ScreamingMeMe · 21/12/2021 16:26

I don't think anyone is frothing. More pointing and laughing.

Sasketchewoo · 21/12/2021 20:30

The thing that cheered me up today was that since JKR's tweets on feminism, her followers dropped from 14 million to 13.9. I mean, I'm sure that was the equivalent pain of a mosquito bite, but still. Today it's back at 14m. It shows she has so much support, for all the death threats.

I find the whole idea of quidditch rather endearing. The world has been a frightening place for people under 25 to grow up in with terrorism and climate change and it makes sense some of them have clung to something childish and comforting. It doesn't stop them being idiots in terms of how they're behaving at the moment but there's room for all sorts in this world. Better a quidditch player than being a furry, for example. And if it gets more women running around, being active, given how many women drop out of sport, then even better.

CallMeNutribullet · 21/12/2021 21:21

Pretty difficult to "distance yourself" when you're playing a pretend sport that literally came from the imagination of the person you want to be distant from
