Also there is the small matter that the name is trademarked be Warner brothers.

But who knew? I certainly had no idea there were to US Quidditch leagues running around with broomsticks between there legs!

It's all ridiculous. The 'gender' riles. People are running around with sticks between their legs pretending they can fly and calling it a sport. I'm fond of nerdy things like D&D but this is going much too far even for me.

I was once part of a fandom group that tried to ban anything to do with JKR but had no problem with certain popular male authors from the first half of the 20th century whose views would be very unacceptable now. I left. I don't agree with banning anyone, but the sexist hypocrisy made it even worse.

Sidenote: why would a team catch the snitch when they're more than 150 points down? Unless they're losing by about 500 points and want to put the game out of its misery - but if there's not too big a gap, surely you'd want to avoid catching it until doing so would get you the win?

Made me laugh!

Waitwhat23 · 20/12/2021 16:36

@GreenWhiteViolet In the Goblet of Fire, Krum purposely catches the Snitch despite not having enough points to win because the Irish side are just too good and he wants to lose on his own terms.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 20/12/2021 16:53

One a link to his band's website featuring their song 'Fukdapolice'.

@MrsTerryPratchett

How many crotch accidents are we having here?!!

That's why they're changing the name to crotchstitch.

Interesting! It's far too many years since I read the books. That makes a bit more sense now. Smile

TheWeeDonkey · 20/12/2021 18:45

Bawbag!

TheWeeDonkey · 20/12/2021 18:46

Sorry thats my suggestion for the new name 😂

Kanaloa · 20/12/2021 19:08

Also the game can go for days and days with people getting hurt so I guess sometimes you would just want to be finished with it win or lose. I do seem to remember Wood being over the top with Harry in one book and insisting that he not catch the snitch unless they are an appropriate amount of points up so they are able to move up the league.

That’s proper quidditch. In muggle quidditch I imagine you catch the snitch and end the game as soon as possible so nobody sees you pretending to play quidditch in the park.

Not just a general suggestion!
Zandathepanda · 20/12/2021 19:41

Radio 2 just had this on the news and it was very biased- sounded like JKR against transgender people

TheWeeDonkey · 20/12/2021 19:57

Haha yes MrsPrachett played by bawbags 😂

Buttonitboris · 20/12/2021 20:13

How about they invent their own game rather than stealing JK Rowling's ideas? That would create distance, no?

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/12/2021 20:19

@TheWeeDonkey

Haha yes MrsPrachett played by bawbags 😂
It's like the Irn Bru advert.

'Played in Scotland, by bawbags'

Matt Bateman, president of QuidditchUK, said it fully supported the change. “We cannot continue to call ourselves quidditch and be associated with JK Rowling while she continues to make damaging and hateful comments against the many transgender athletes, staff and volunteers who call this sporting community home,” he said.

Hasn't he just defamed JKR? What a prat.
Sounds like defamation to me. I hope he gets a solicitors letter from her.*

I just know there will be a bold fail when I post this so apologies in advance.

Anyway,I hope JKR'S lawyers are having a busy and profitable Christmas.

In general I think her policy (as far as one can guess what her policy is, given that these things are likely subject to NDA's and go under the radar) of not being seen to be particularly litigious but occasionally going after the odd particularly egregious case (usually someone with a lot of followers) is a good one. However this latest salvo by the TRAs is producing lots of much repeated defamation. I think she should knock it on the head and I hope she does.

What is it a certain suspended doctor used to say about valuable and important lessons?

No reason why institutions like the BBC shouldn't have to learn them.

Having had a quick look at the rules of quidditch (apparently the lower case Q is very important), they use JKR's names for the various types of ball (quaffle, snitch etc). If they are determined that changing the name is needed to disassociate themselves from JKR, then presumably they'll also change the names of the balls, drop using broomsticks etc etc (and these things will presumably come under copyright laws).

....oh wait, that would be a completely different game. I'm betting they're not going to do that though.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 20/12/2021 20:59

that would be a completely different game

I think it is anyway!

I'm no HP expert but a bunch of people running round after a tennis ball in a sock doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to soaring broomsticks and a flying golden snitch.

igivein · 20/12/2021 21:09

Only just seen this thread, but I’ve been chuckling all day at the tweet that described them as ‘sad knobs on broomsticks’, which, if you’re old enough to remember the film, is just genius Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2021 21:31

I'm sure they could come up with a name from permutations of the various synonyms of 'quid' and 'ditch'. Plugdump? Poundtrench?

BraveBananaBadge · 20/12/2021 23:36

Hang on... penny starting to drop at the Graun..?

@PenguindreamsofDraco

This is all just so stupid isn't it. It all kicked off on one of the fanfiction sites I used to like at the weekend because the author doesn't agree with 'the shit that woman says', but it's ok to keep writing the stories for the online ego strokes because the fandom belongs to them not her. The absolute hypocrisy and batshittery of it all.
It's very trendy to put disclaimers of hatred in your fic summaries on Ao3. I refuse to click on them (though the tags tell me ... the vast majority of these people have issues and their content is probably not for me).

Apart from All The Young Dudes - which I clicked on out of morbid curiosity due to the hype. It was shit. I didn't make it past chapter 5 and Misskingbeans89 is no Jo Rowling. (and how the fuck do you write a compelling gay love story if you refuse to acknowledge what biological sex is?)

All of this is wrong, but ‘athletes?’ I really wouldn’t consider a field quidditch player an ‘athlete.’ Isn’t is basically just playing Harry Potter? My kids play ‘you be Captain America I’ll be Iron Man’ all the time but they’re not superheroes.
Kanaloa · 21/12/2021 00:36

And as for the stupidity of Harry Potter belonging to the fans - so ridiculous. It’s common on Tumblr though, you see a lot of ‘if you think x character is trans then they are!’

I got into a bit of an argument about the issue except not about Harry Potter, about George from Famous Five. The way I saw it, George behaved as a boy because she was restricted by gender expectations. I’d be a boy if the other option was hanging about the camp with drippy Anne folding my jammies up to put under my pillow and preparing sandwiches for Julian and Dick.

MargaritaPie · 21/12/2021 01:16

I'm not going to comment on the trans-discussion here, but are there seriously grown adults hopping around with brooms between their legs "playing quidditch"?
