FannyCann · 19/12/2021 06:48

Also there is the small matter that the name is trademarked be Warner brothers.

But who knew? I certainly had no idea there were to US Quidditch leagues running around with broomsticks between there legs!

@Sportsnight

Surely they’ll have more trouble than the name?She invented the game, so has copyright of that too. Otherwise I can just launch my new board games Quonopoly and Qleudo with no fear of comeback.
This is what I was wondering, and you expressed it so well. I don't understand how changing the name makes a difference, when they're still playing a game she invented. Confused

US league?? My brother's friend is at Cambridge, and is on their Quidditch team!

SW1amp · 19/12/2021 11:09

There are some Quidditch teams near me..! We quite often walk past them ‘playing’ on a weekend

They are the sort of people who were in the battle re-enactment and Dungeons and Dragons clubs at university, with some very enthusiastic Americans thrown in

Even the competitive frisbee teams look down on them, and they were hardly the cool kids..!

averylongtimeago · 19/12/2021 11:30

We play quidditch with our Guides occasionally- (don't use broomsticks!).
It's good fun, lots of running about and laughter.
I won't be changing the name.

FannyCann · 19/12/2021 11:43

Perhaps this is one of those occasions when reality is a welcome friend. They demonstrably aren't playing quidditch. They maybe clutching broomsticks but no one is flying. I'm not clear what they do about the golden snitch but either someone is throwing it or they have a battery operated "flying" ball thingy with wings. Confused
So they can reasonably argue they aren't playing quidditch and call it whatever they like.
Then people will soon forget about the association with Harry Potter, refine those broomsticks and before you know it they will be playing lacrosse! Xmas Grin

[quote FannyCann]Thanks for the laugh this morning. 😂

I am minded of the letter from Sir Archibald Clerk Kerr sharing a little light in the dark days of the war.

We mustn't be mean and selfish when a little brightness is shed even by the DM.

I love a bit of insanity on a Sunday morning. Thank you for this shed of brightness Fanny 😂😂😂

@crumpet

Am still gobsmacked that this appears to be a real game. Played by adults. Mostly men I see, who seem to enjoy running around holding an extended phallus.

God it’s funny though. Not just the playing but the pofaced seriousness of it all!

Both the league representatives quoted in the article are women, as are most of the pictured players. So where are you "seeing" that it's mostly men?
MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/12/2021 12:36

Thank you FannyCann. Amazing how far this wonderful woman's creativity has spread across the world. But oh dear, some people's lives must be exhausting as they scour the horizon for the latest microaggression / unpure thought that they must leap to respond to.

I think the name of this activity is the least of its problems tbh.

I loved Katie Herzog's suggestion--change it to Quiddix (as in Latinx).

Waitwhat23 · 19/12/2021 13:29

I look forward to seeing 'Ratcatch', 'Surgery!' and 'Warship' in the shops soon if copyright is to just be ignored from now on.

It's the sheer spitefulness of the whole thing which I find ridiculous. If you don't agree with JKR's perfectly rational views to the extent that you are trying to dissociate herself from her creation, then at least have the courage of your convictions and stop making/buying merchandise, playing a game which she invented etc etc because it makes you look like a bloody hypocrite.

I've seen so many little diatribes online about how the fans 'really own the idea of Harry Potter now' and that they are fans of the films, not the books (ignoring the fact that JKR was heavily involved in the films). It's the most bizarre thing.

LemonSwan · 19/12/2021 13:41

All I can say is this looks like a wholly unnecessarily dangerous game.

Running around with a stick in your privates for the sake of pretending you are flying on a broom stick. How many crotch accidents are we having here?!! Ouch & utterly bizarre.

viques · 19/12/2021 13:51

I can’t quite decide if April Fool has come early or late with this story. It really is the ultimate # self obsessed dickheads who take themselves too seriously and don’t realise we are all laughing at them wokery isn’t it.

You honestly couldn’t make it up, not unless you were JKR who let’s face it made it up in the first place.........

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 19/12/2021 13:55

I was curious enough to look this up and apparently it's put inside a sock that dangles from a player's shorts. Confused

viques · 19/12/2021 13:58

@ArtemesiaK

What if one of them has a lapse of memory and accidentally misnames it? The shame! It will be like playing Quidditch on eggshells....
Excuse me , you are describing my popular copyrighted game there Queggshell, (registered) available in many discount stores, and online. Eggshells not included, terms and conditions apply, no liability accepted for death or injury incurred during play.
FannyCann · 19/12/2021 13:59

Why thank you @TheWeeDonkey
The shed is a welcoming, inclusive place, may the warmth of its bright light spread far and chase away the shadows.

So you have to snatch the snitch while avoiding snitching the snatch? Ouch.

I didn't believe this. After a quick search I now believe you, and have a very dodgy search history. 😂

FannyCann · 19/12/2021 14:06

Neil Oliver gives and excellent explanation of Quidditch here, that had completely passed over my head before.

JK Rowling outrage is a load of hufflepuff that misses her point.
