Nobody knows why there are women and there are men?

According to Ellie Mae O'Hagan of the CLASS think tank:

"I don't know why some people are women and some people are men, nobody on this panel does"

Crikey, I know things are bad, but I didn't know we had reached Defcon 1 already.

@ruthieness

Hebetude is not a prolific poster...
Too dull and lethargic to bother.
ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2021 09:56

@Igneococcus

Species that reproduce asexually tend to be very specialist. Limited ability to adapt to new or changing environments.

Some can switch between both forms, yeasts for example.
Yes, I'm still flying the flag for those single cell organisms, although yeasts are of course Eukaryotes.

Lots of plants can reproduce sexually and asexually, can't they?

Bacteria and viruses reproduce asexually (the latter maybe without even being 'alive') and are good at rapid changes, maybe because of their quick and prolific reproduction method?

Whoever said you get 50% of your DNA from each parent is wrong.
You forgot about the mitochondria. They have a small amount of DNA and are exclusively inherited from our mothers.
Has no bearing as to whether the egg is fertilised by an X sperm or a Y sperm.

OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg · 19/11/2021 10:08

I think the word I’m looking for is

Aaaaaaaanyway…

Igneococcus · 19/11/2021 10:14

Yes, plants can also do both.
Algae can do sexual and asexual reproducation as well, and make diploid spores and haploid gametes, I can't quite remember the details, I actually need to read up on it for work.

Sonex · 19/11/2021 10:16

I saw this and thought, "what an absolute dipshit"

This is why I forced my son to do GCSE Biology. I swear everyone between that ages of 20 and 35 needs to be forcibly sent to Saturday school to do or redo Biology, and be forced to pay attention this time, instead of giving BJs behind the bike shed it whatever this person was doing instead.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2021 10:26

I'm not sure anyone even needs to do gcse biology tbh. Just live in the real world. Animals know what sex each other are, and that includes humans.

This.

My first thought on hearing twa literally women was that stallions who are gelded are not transmares.

@SCR0071

I was about to reply to repentmotherfucker but hebetude prevailed.
No go for it Grin

Have you been at the thesaurus again Mother?

My dog avoids men and sniffs women's crotches.

Possibly he identifies as a lesbian...

Honestly, I get the impression that some visitors think because this place is called "Mumsnet," that the posters here are all silly frilly girly things who pushed their brains out of their bodies along with babies and placentas.

lottiegarbanzo · 19/11/2021 12:10

I think you are dead right TheElementsSong

lottiegarbanzo · 19/11/2021 12:15

And back to the sensible discussion; yes, as I recall, asexual reproduction is fast, good for rapid colonisation. It also magnifies the effects of any genetic mutation, as all the offspring have it. So if it's advantageous, great, if not that line dies out.

The alternate generation organisms, likes mosses and ferns, combine the fast / slow, and mix for longevity / don't bother mixing and just get some babies out there, methods.

Hebetude · 19/11/2021 12:25

Oh! I was so so carefree last night… but today, I simply cannot be arsed!

Fariha31 · 19/11/2021 13:41

I hate to throw a cat among the pidgeons but... some people describe the Y chromosome as a deformed X.

There is some reasoning to this as the Y is much smaller and does indeed look like its a small falformed X.

lottiegarbanzo · 19/11/2021 13:43

And? The implications of this in your view are?

borntobequiet · 19/11/2021 13:46

Old fashioned fuse wire could be used to make models of X and Y chromosomes if required.
What a faff fuse boxes used to be.

specialsauce · 19/11/2021 13:54

Nobody knows why there are fuse boxes

Hebetude · 19/11/2021 13:55

I am too tired to ask pp about fuse boxes.

TeamRex · 19/11/2021 13:57

I hate to throw a cat among the pidgeons but

If it's a pigeon-identifying cat that wouldn't cause any problems at all. And anyway, no-one knows why some animals are cats and why some are pigeons and anyone who says they do know is a liar.

merrymouse · 19/11/2021 13:58

Nobody knows why there are boxes. Everywhere.

ArabellaScott · 19/11/2021 14:34

I don't know why some
people are women and some
people are men

WHY GOD WHY

DialSquare · 19/11/2021 14:36

I'm also in the conFUSEed BOX.
