That’s awful.

There’s a trans women on tiktok who has recently asked why so many women are being transphobic as of late, said trans women thinks women are jealous because we are not as attractive as trans women.

Interestingly just saw someone on Twitter responding to someone replying to this story saying that he wants to listen to both sides of the argument since trans women are women. Someone replied that no they’re not- to be a trans women you have to be a man.

It’s interesting reading all round and I really feel for this women who has been treated absolutely appallingly. Why students have gotten away with such behaviour is beyond me.

I listened earlier. It is a fantastic interview. I am sure a lot of listeners will have been aghast to hear about Kathleen’s experiences and are now much better informed.

No doubt activists are flooding the BBC with complaints. Don’t forget to send feedback if you liked the episode.

‘ No doubt activists are flooding the BBC with complaints’

It’s worrying really isn’t it. If this is how this kathleen is treated, what about those whose views are not supportive?

Didn’t a male biology professor say on live tv recently that you cannot change your sex because its ingrained into every single cell of your body, for example?

A line needs to be drawn somewhere, where people are speaking factually, but respectfully this should not be allowed to happen.

Going to listen later, thanks for posting. I was at the Sussex Uni Open Day last month when there was a demo by masked, hooded, protestors. They were handing out flyers with highly defamatory (and badly written) statements about Prof. Stock, no contact details of course. It was noisy and intimidating even though I was fully aware that it might happen. Needless to say my DC won't be applying there, in fact couldn't get off campus fast enough even though the course sounded excellent.

Carboncheque · 03/11/2021 12:52

#BeKind is being trotted out when they’ve harassed someone out of a job because her opinions making them feel ‘unsafe’?

Wakaranaihito · 03/11/2021 12:58

Just listened to this. At last WH gives a little attention to this subject. She is so reasonable and reasoned. I hope this means the duck has been broken and this will be covered properly in future.

Thank goodness that Women's Hour are airing this issue at last. I missed the start of the interview so I'm not clear why she has resigned. She had previously said that she felt she had been well supported by Sussex University through this so I'm not sure if they can shoulder any blame. I do hope that Women's Hour continue to look at these issues. So many people I talk to are unaware of them.

If you want to have background, do an advanced MN search for Kathleen Stock. Sussex University came good in the end, but were slow in offering support. The Union, the Labour Party and some of Kathleen's colleagues have been far less good.

More recent events have been covered well in some of the media, including the Times and the Mail Online. The latter is free access, and a search of Mail Online and Kathleen Stock will bring up most of the more recent events.

@JoodyBlue

The thing that really strikes me is she and the other academics who have the same courage are standing up for the right of all students to say 2+2 = 4. This is never highlighted in interview. It is always painted as one generation against another. The reality is that I suspect there is a large percentage of the student population silenced on a issue they want to question themselves. There are very few people standing for their right to think. Prof Stock is one. These women are epic! If they lose, we lose the right to think, it is very stark isn't it?
Excellent point.

@TedImgoingmad

Weirdly, it makes me even angrier to think about how long they ignored it though.

By shutting down Jenni Murray, the BBC set the tone in discussing trans issues for years, and handed a massive victory to TRAs. As the nation's public broadcaster, they were instrumental in helping create the vicious climate against free speech we are in. They have been caught out now and publicly shamed by the Nolan Report. This is them attempting atonement, but it's too late, the damage is done. The BBC learned absolutely nothing from Savile.

Agree with everything you say. They leapt on a bandwagon and promoted the ideology and adopted the agenda and language of a lobby without a thought about the implications or a care for the women whose perspective Woman's Hour supposedly reflects.

They have been shamed by people who did speak out and campaigned, including many on mumsnet; some notable journalists and bloggers; new women's groups; JK Rowling; individuals who took court cases, and several female academics and other individuals who suffered horrendous abuse online and in person.

Emma Barnett can now vacate her seat on the high horse she likes to jump on when pompously lecturing people about journalistic principles as she did the other day to an unfortunate interviewee.

nettie434 · 03/11/2021 13:22

As an addendum, Sir Peter Bottomley MP is being interviewed on World at One about Owen Patterson case. I'd just like to add, he said, that Sussex Uni should withdraw the honorary doctorate from the person who called Professor Kathleen Stock transphobic. I don't know who he's referring to but it shows that it's becoming much more common to question the threats she's received.

bogeythefungusman · 03/11/2021 13:24

Did anyone just here Peter Bottomley's quick sentence of support for Kathleen Stock on World at One?

He shoehorned it in during a discussion about Owen Patterson and rules governing MP's conduct Grin

bogeythefungusman · 03/11/2021 13:24

X post!

KnightonShiningArmour · 03/11/2021 13:25

Did anyone one else just hear “Father of the House” Sir Peter Bottomley MP interrupt his own response to an unconnected question on BBC Radio 4 World At One to call KS a dangerous extremist and say she should be stripped of her doctorate?

DaisiesandButtercups · 03/11/2021 13:27

Did anyone hear Peter Bottomly MP
on the world at one on radio 4 say that the honorary phd should be stripped from the person who called Kathleen Stock a violent extremist? I am not sure who he is talking about but interesting that he really wanted to say it.

At approximately 13:16.

Going to listen to women’s hour after world at one, thank you for the heads up op!

bogeythefungusman · 03/11/2021 13:28

Knighton, think you need to listen again - he was in support of KS. I think the fact that he wanted to show support but was being interviewed about a different subject meant his sentence was a bit garbled, but definitely supportive.

DaisiesandButtercups · 03/11/2021 13:28

Halloween Grin a bit of cross posting!

bogeythefungusman · 03/11/2021 13:29

Grin hope no one else heard it as Knighton did!

YearsSinceISawYou · 03/11/2021 13:32

Peter Bottomley. Was a man ever better named...a total arse!

KnightonShiningArmour · 03/11/2021 13:37

I’m sorry! I stand corrected! I completely misheard!

TrevorFountain · 03/11/2021 13:38

a) You've got the wrong end of the stick, methinks!

b) And anyway, doctorates - actual, earned doctorates - can't be stripped from people, not even women

Which is good because of all the wanky titles I have a retired academic and board luminary, 'Dr' is the one of which I am most proud tbh. I worked for that bastard.

TrevorFountain · 03/11/2021 13:39

Oh god, I'm cross-posting with x-posts now!

As you were.

lanadelgrey · 03/11/2021 13:43

So who was he referring to ie who is the honorary doctor who spoke out against KS?
