'Mumsnet is a perfect example of how bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber' Owen Jones FB post comment section

The full quote is:

'Mumsnet is a perfect example of how bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber - I'd bet at least half of the anti-trans sentiment comes from people who have a driving need to protect their children and loved ones, but their feelings have been targeted and manipulated by lies.'

AIBU to wonder who are the people targeting mumsnet users and manipulating us with lies exactly? Or are we just targeting and manipulating ourselves with these lies because we are an echo chamber? Also interesting on this comment section - only 'Karens' are anti trans, so we have trans rights supporters telling people to be inclusive and tolerant, whilst they get to be exclusionary and hypocritical? Smells fishy to me...

Thanks Owen, but I came to the conclusions I have all on my own, even with my silly pink brain!

DodoPatrol · 16/09/2021 13:57

a driving need to protect their children and loved ones.

I wish we had been able to do so. Breasts don't regrow. Broken voices don't revert. Male pattern baldness is not a thing I'd wish on any young woman. I'm yet to be convinced of the compensatory benefits.

What lies have we been fed, other than by the trans lobby?

teawamutu · 16/09/2021 13:57

bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber...

...sez the misogynist who blocks all the women who disagree with him.

Hmm
ArabellaScott · 16/09/2021 13:58

You patronising wee nyaff, Owen.

FurzeMinister · 16/09/2021 13:59

Owen Jones is a perfect example of how lame-brained, uncritical sexism, misogyny, and extreme self-promoting hyoercapitalist neoliberalism can become amplified in an echo chamber.

And yet - this is the most generous and self-aware thing I've ever heard that weaponised sexist say.

PlanDeRaccordement · 16/09/2021 13:59

But MN isn’t an echo chamber? On just about every thread regarding trans there have been a wide variety of opinions.

It’s just silliness for MN to be likened to an echo chamber of bigotry and hate on par with say 4chan.

yourhairiswinterfire · 16/09/2021 13:59

in an echo chamber

Say the people who use block lists to block people they've never interacted with, in case they happen to see one of them disagreeing with their worldview. Bahaha.

SafeMove · 16/09/2021 13:59

It just smacks of 'You may be concerned about the safety of yourself, your children and your loved ones but put that aside because trans feelings are more important and you've obviously been lied to and manipulated anyway'. So instead of addressing the problem - women don't feel safe with self ID and giving up same sex spaces - we become the problem. It's 'the Karens'.

You can tell people are terrified to comment too. Such is the crushing of voices.

Sorry, it isn't OJ himself who wrote this but a trans man who follows him. Just for clarity. Jones has posted a video of him interviewing a trans woman with the caption 'Why trans rights will free all of us...'

GrandmaMazur · 16/09/2021 14:04

Aw, did the nasty wimmin say something mean about you LOJ?

PaleGreenGhost · 16/09/2021 14:04

Ah. YouTuber Owen Jones again. Utterly incapable of speaking about women without showing his misogyny. And why hasn't he spoken out against use of the Karen slur, champion of the working class that he claims to be?

God forbid any of us impressionable Karens are intelligent critical thinkers? Educated? Work in safeguarding? Have a socialist understanding of class analysis? Are abuse survivors alert to males pushing at boundaries?

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 16/09/2021 14:07

LOJ trans rights have no impact on women's rights interviewing Shon, enjoy you're erasure, FayeHmm
If trans rights do not impact women's rights how are we erased
Why is LOJ not asking that question?

SafeMove · 16/09/2021 14:07

@PaleGreenGhost I pointed out the hypocrisy of the Karen slur and have been roundly ignored. The only gender critical response on there that has received much recognition has been a comment by a man (of course) who has been roundly jumped on.

I know......we're terrible. Pesky women! Being interested in their own rights! Saying no! Fuck them!

Imnobody4 · 16/09/2021 14:16

I'm starting to feel sorry for OJ (well not really) he does seem to be clinging desperately to the wreckage of his career and relevance. I can't remember the last time he wrote anything inciteful or engaging. Can't imagine what he's going to be like when he hits middle age and the young bloods pass him by.

RoyalCorgi · 16/09/2021 14:17

So proud.

Seriously, though, there are a series of lies that TRAs now repeat at every turn about their political opponents. Is there some men's rights HQ that disseminates this stuff for people to repeat, along with mindless slogans such as "Trans women are women"? Top three lies at the moment are:

  1. Gender-critical feminists are fascists.
  2. Gender-critical feminists are funded by the American evangelical right.
  3. Gender-critical feminists target sites like Mumsnet, which is full of dimwitted mums who can't think for themselves, in order to brainwash them with their evil anti-trans ideology.
SafeMove · 16/09/2021 14:17

I am now being told that TERF and Karen are slurs based on behaviours and so they are okay. So if you 'behave' like a Karen, you get called Karen. However, if you identify and feel like you are something and get called a slur that is not okay. Hmm, right oh,

If I identify as a clickbait writer slash YouTuber slash person on the right side of history can I throw slurs around with abandon?
Anotheruser02 · 16/09/2021 14:23

TERF is based on a belief (or lack of), a protected one at that.

SafeMove · 16/09/2021 14:24

I replied with 'Well I identify and feel like a Karen, now what?' If he abuses me again I will ask where my protection is from being abused him? The amount of woman haters OJ attracts must be telling him something!

God he’s such a yuuuuuuge patronising fucking misogynistic bellend

He can’t get his head around the idea that women can come to their own conclusions

Also I’ve no idea where he thinks those of us who are not mothers but still think TWATW fit into his world view

ANewCreation · 16/09/2021 14:35

What was that thing about accusations being admissions...?

longwayoff · 16/09/2021 14:39

Poor Owen. How did such a soul reach this world? Born of woman, you say. Hmm. Does he know?

Fariha31 · 16/09/2021 14:40

Ahahahaha, anyone else think LOJ is feeling the heat.

Babamamananarama · 16/09/2021 14:42

Or could it just be that women who have born children and know what a massive toll that can take on your body, life, mental health, finances etc might have a much harder time being convinced that biological sex is irrelevant / doesn't exist?
