'Mumsnet is a perfect example of how bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber' Owen Jones FB post comment section

The full quote is:

'Mumsnet is a perfect example of how bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber - I'd bet at least half of the anti-trans sentiment comes from people who have a driving need to protect their children and loved ones, but their feelings have been targeted and manipulated by lies.'

AIBU to wonder who are the people targeting mumsnet users and manipulating us with lies exactly? Or are we just targeting and manipulating ourselves with these lies because we are an echo chamber? Also interesting on this comment section - only 'Karens' are anti trans, so we have trans rights supporters telling people to be inclusive and tolerant, whilst they get to be exclusionary and hypocritical? Smells fishy to me...

The Twitter echo chambers are quite frightening. According to TRAs, GC feminists are racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, far-right, wealthy, gender-traditionalist, anti-choice anti-vaxxers. And apparently we want to eradicate trans people and deny them access to public toilets, medical care and the opportunity to participate in sport.

It’s like they throw every slur at us they can think of and hope that some of them stick.

BTW, “Karen” probably wasn’t aimed at all women originally. But it’s certainly become a slur, used to try and silence any woman who disagrees with a man.

BraveBananaBadge · 16/09/2021 14:43

The moment anyone denounces the whole of Mumsnet like that, you know they're full of absolute shit (aware the original quote wasn't LOJ).

There are perhaps two boards (FWR, AIBU) on the whole site that deal with topics they don't like in a way they don't like, and from that they'd have the whole thing shut down and taken away from women who need it and see that as a good thing.

Mumsnet stands for something they can't abide. And they clearly don't read it or want to understand it, but use it as virtue-signalling shorthand. It tells you everything you need to know and I forgot how bloody angry it makes me. Rip him a new one OP Grin

Fariha31 · 16/09/2021 14:46

@GrandmaMazur Why, yes. Yes you can.

Beowulfa · 16/09/2021 14:46

I for one am grateful that Jones, and other men, take the time to helpfully explain to us simple, befuddled wimmens what exactly a woman is and what we can't say no to. It would be so confusing otherwise.

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 16/09/2021 14:46

Bollocks, isn't it? My adult dd told me I was 'radicalised by mumsnet'.

Thank God for mumsnet and the women here who are willing to speak up for women.

DialSquare · 16/09/2021 14:59

They always mention bigotry and hatred, yet never target the forums that really are transphobic. Why is that? Why Mumsnet? Apart from the fact that the majority of us are women so an easy target, it's because they know that the posters on here know what they are taking about. And when someone new to this subject starts to read up on it, they will inevitably come to the same conclusion as the rest of us. This ideology is a danger to women and children. And they have no argument to that apart from slurs.

Helleofabore · 16/09/2021 15:01

oh noes..... the mummies have been talking again.... better get them to shut up. Talk is so dangerous.

RoyalCorgi · 16/09/2021 15:04

Spot on, DialSquare. They don't care about the real transphobic slurs you see on Kiwi Farms and elsewhere. They care about intelligent, educated, thoughtful women pointing out the safeguarding risks. That's why they have to paint us as brainwashed, or fascists, or silly mums, or Karens. It's because they're running scared.

In so many other countries this ideology has been steamrollered through into legislation without any dissent, but in the UK there is a fightback and it's largely thanks to women on this forum. The absolute rage this induces in the TRAs is a joy to behold.

BoredZelda · 16/09/2021 15:09

He’s not entirely wrong.

senua · 16/09/2021 15:20

How on earth can MN be described as an "echo chamber"?Confused The TRA are dog-whistled on to threads all the time. We get plenty of exposure to the opposing view, tyvm.

Artichokeleaves · 16/09/2021 15:22

Come and have a look around, Owen.

I can point you to several threads, today alone, where the women representing care for women's rights and interested equal to those of the male people in the situation are explaining their points articulately, in detail, with evidence, often by referring to law.

The posts arguing that the male person's rights should be supreme and dominant over the women in the situation, whose needs and rights should be disregarded?

Cannot engage or discuss any points on the thread at all. They seem to struggle to even read and understand any of the discussion. They merely pop on and download another slogan or thoughtless mantra. That's it. That's all. There's the echo chamber bit.

But let's just cut to the chase and join in with MW eh Owen? What you and they really are saying today is:

Women who want sex based rights and equality of consideration/inclusion are bad people! Doing bad things! They eat worms! They smell! They're causing climate change by talking with their pink brains and all the hot air! They're directly responsible for Boris's bad haircut! And Other Bad Stuff Too!

Boo to women who want rights equal to male born people!

334bu · 16/09/2021 15:38

He’s not entirely wrong.

In what way is it an echo chamber, when everyone can post and nobody is blocked?

senua · 16/09/2021 15:43

Also, it's a cheek to try to accuse us of being an echo-chamber when THEY were the ones who thought not talking to the other side (no debate) was a good idea!

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 16/09/2021 15:47

Mumsnet is a perfect example of how bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber

What, the Christmas Bargain threads? Style and Beauty? The Litter Tray

As a PP said, 90% of the threads on this site give no thought whatsoever to trans issues. It’s just (mainly) women talking to each other

They don’t like that much either though, ignorant fuckers

DodoPatrol · 16/09/2021 15:48

Except, of course, that those who prioritise biological sex in discussions do seem to get banned by MN more than those who prioritise gender identities.

EdgeOfACoin · 16/09/2021 15:53

@BoredZelda

He’s not entirely wrong.
Only because nobody can answer the questions put to them. They just slink away.

Every other board has vibrant debates on Brexit, the Covid vaccine, etc. People backing up their viewpoint with cogent arguments and facts.

But on here, nobody wants to enter the debate. Like when it became clear the WiSpa incident wasn't a hoax, we invited PPs from previous threads who had originally defended the penis-owner back to engage in the discussion. But they didn't. It was all very strange.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/09/2021 15:53

He’s not entirely wrong.

How is it an echo chamber? It's not our fault that most TRAs aren't able to robustly defend their views in good faith, and plop and run or derail threads to the point of ruining them for everyone.

Blibbyblobby · 16/09/2021 16:05

Mumsnet made me committed to the importance of not erasing the voices, needs and experiences of female people in favour of the voices, needs and experiences of a mixed sex group called "women", but it wasn't FWR that did that, it's the heartbreaking stories of the widespread everyday abuse and disempowerment of female people by the males who are supposed to love them and support the families they create.

I fucking dare these genderists to read a year's worth of posts from hundreds, maybe thousands of female people in pain and confusion telling us what their lives are like, then turn round, look us in the eye and tell us trans women's lives are just like ours.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 16/09/2021 16:05

Come here and tell us the alleged truths then, Owen's friend!

On an oldfashion long-form forum like this, no-one can block you for saying stuff we don't want to hear. Unlike OJ's facebook page and twitter where he does exactly that!

MaudTheInvincible · 16/09/2021 16:11

Indifference is outrageous murderous hate if you're a narcissist.

Indeed. And yet we are the "echo chamber", not people who block everyone so they don't have to hear views they find challenging Confused

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/09/2021 16:15

Again, it's just more fucking gaslighting bullshit.

Artichokeleaves · 16/09/2021 16:18

Oh well. They only ever play the woman with the ball.

We're doing something right.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 16/09/2021 16:22

He and his camp followers really don't like women speaking.

Owen, if you're reading luv, pipe down.

FlyingOink · 16/09/2021 16:23

Sorry, it isn't OJ himself who wrote this but a trans man who follows him. Just for clarity.
Has he liked it or retweeted it?
I don't use twitter but it would be good to have a link, OP.
