'Mumsnet is a perfect example of how bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber' Owen Jones FB post comment section

The full quote is:

'Mumsnet is a perfect example of how bigotry and hatred can become amplified in an echo chamber - I'd bet at least half of the anti-trans sentiment comes from people who have a driving need to protect their children and loved ones, but their feelings have been targeted and manipulated by lies.'

AIBU to wonder who are the people targeting mumsnet users and manipulating us with lies exactly? Or are we just targeting and manipulating ourselves with these lies because we are an echo chamber? Also interesting on this comment section - only 'Karens' are anti trans, so we have trans rights supporters telling people to be inclusive and tolerant, whilst they get to be exclusionary and hypocritical? Smells fishy to me...

'Oh we all knew you were karen, sweetie'

Response from a male supporter because I told him the term 'Karen' is mysogynistic and hypocritical. These people. I can't even be bothered to respond as I just don't know what to write, so it has worked. Shut down by Owen Jones fans Grin a new low!

A misognist, being a misognist. And condescending too. I wouldn't worry about it. It doesn't matter what argument you give, they can't rebutt it so they resort to slurs.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/09/2021 17:37

@DodoPatrol

In what way is it an echo chamber, when everyone can post and nobody is blocked?

Except, of course, that those who prioritise biological sex in discussions do seem to get banned by MN more than those who prioritise gender identities.

Now now, Dodo.

You aren't supposed to notice that!

Congressdingo · 16/09/2021 17:48

@Cattenberg

The Twitter echo chambers are quite frightening. According to TRAs, GC feminists are racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, far-right, wealthy, gender-traditionalist, anti-choice anti-vaxxers. And apparently we want to eradicate trans people and deny them access to public toilets, medical care and the opportunity to participate in sport.

It’s like they throw every slur at us they can think of and hope that some of them stick.

BTW, “Karen” probably wasn’t aimed at all women originally. But it’s certainly become a slur, used to try and silence any woman who disagrees with a man.

Yeah but theres only about 10 of us and millions of sock puppets so I dont know why they are so terrified enough to lob insults all the time.

Oh no! Where will he turn for parenting advice when he gets a baby?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 16/09/2021 17:53

Mumsnet used to be very TWAW. Occasionally trans activists admit that for a second before going into a rant about mumsnettere being "radicalised".

Should be pretty simple to get the silly mummies back on-message then, shouldn't it?

But they don't even try. I wish they would, tbh. I used to only hang out having bunfights rigorous debates on parking in AIBU. Grin I started seeking out threads about the impact on women's rights on FWR after seeing two trans activists' witless and offensive responses on a thread in AIBU.

Please do that more!

SafeMove · 16/09/2021 17:56

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

I was going to post this on AIBU but thought MN might just delete it because...well history!

@BraveBananaBadge

The moment anyone denounces the whole of Mumsnet like that, you know they're full of absolute shit (aware the original quote wasn't LOJ).

There are perhaps two boards (FWR, AIBU) on the whole site that deal with topics they don't like in a way they don't like, and from that they'd have the whole thing shut down and taken away from women who need it and see that as a good thing.

Mumsnet stands for something they can't abide. And they clearly don't read it or want to understand it, but use it as virtue-signalling shorthand. It tells you everything you need to know and I forgot how bloody angry it makes me. Rip him a new one OP Grin

Yes!

I used to be pretty 'that never happens' on the trans stuff until I was radicalised by mumsnet, but even then i was deeply uncomfortable whenever I saw people (i mostly respected) dismiss MN out of hand as a byword for transphobia. It's such a misogynist thing to overlook what routinely happens all over the other 95% of site. Support for women leaving abusive relationships, unpicking traumatic childhoods and childbirths, getting the hang of breastfeeding or coming to terms with it not working out for them, parenting stuff, infertility stuff, SEN stuff... but all of that is apparently invisible or inconsequential. Women's stuff, isn't it.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 16/09/2021 18:01

I meant to strike through until i was radicalised by mumsnet there Blush

@HappyVagabond

It's true though. Anyone who has a different opinion is shut down.
No they are not.

When people are advocating for a wholesale change in Law and language do you not expect them to be able to articulate clearly why and to back up their argument for such a seismic change with clear, defined evidence? To be able to answer questions and provide evidence based factual assurances?

That is what is expected and those arguing for the TRA agenda fail every time and then resort to abuse.

If you are incapable of backing up your opinion that is your fault, it is not you being shut down if you cannot make a coherent defence of said opinion.

Clymene · 16/09/2021 18:51

It's weird that a man who blocks anyone who challenges him is complaining about an echo chamber. Some might call that hypocritical

RedDogsBeg · 16/09/2021 19:13

Hypocrisy is Owen Jones middle name Clymene, in fact it seems to be an essential characteristic for TRAs and their allies.

Shutting down someone would be failing to address any of their points or avoiding talking about the issue in question. This is the exact opposite of what happens on this forum, normally users actually do try to engage with posters with alternative views. The problem is the original poster then refusing to actual reply to the queries asked.

Only yesterday a user popped up to explain that transwomen who receive hormones via the NHS "have to get a brain scan to see if they have a womens brain inside a guys body". Unsurprisingly other posters queried the existance such a "brain scan" but the poster has yet to return to enlighten us. This poster was not shut down, in fact they were actively encouraged to return and engage in the conversation but seem to have disappeared from the thread. A story that repeats itself when people can't answer the question.

What? Seriously???

Islamorada · 16/09/2021 19:52

That guy is repulsive. Also, totally irrelevant and live in an echo chamber himself. 🤣

As I would not want to quote something without providing a source, see Alphabay's post on 15-Sep-21 at 20:52 on the How to approach the 'TW in a work loo' issue. There was definitely no widespread attempts to shut down Alphabay, in fact many posters were positively encouraging Alphabay to return and provide further details on this previously unknown NHS brain scan.

I remain confident they will return, Alphabay is probably gathering citations from the hundreds of medical journals referencing this brain scan in order to enlighten everyone.

Owen Jones can fuck off, he says #bekind

No I fucking won’t

TerraNovaTwo · 16/09/2021 20:11

Owen Jones the narcissist. Of course as a privileged white man (AKA cis-gender male) he will never admit he has soap box to stand on because he has one, and us second class homo sapiens (AKA women/cis-gender females) an echo chamber because of what we are. Ironic.

I wonder if Owen Jones can answer this question?

Is a lesbian (AKA a female homosexual) automattically deemed transphopic if they are not sexually attracted to transgender m2f people? Or does that just make them lesbian? And if they are, bisexual?

Regards.

TerraNovaTwo · 16/09/2021 20:12

Because he is one.

Fuck

😂

It was not Owen Jones who said this!

Seriously I can't stand the bloke but how have so many people misunderstood the thread title?!

KittenKong · 16/09/2021 20:14

OJ? Aye right, wee man.

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 16/09/2021 20:14

I'm laughing to myself thinking of little OJ having the birthing person of all mantrums when he sees the naughty mummies on here using their pink brains for independent and critical thinking.

SafeMove · 16/09/2021 20:18

@Passmeamenuatthetottenham

I did state it again in my post too.
