They've stated on Twitter that their communal changing rooms are NOT single-sex and that any woman who wants to be sure of not changing with men should use the gender-neutral toilets. So that's nice.

We encourage members to use the changing rooms they feel most comfortable using

Except if that would be 'the one for women, not males'. Hmm

NotTheFunKindOfFeminist · 23/07/2021 13:29

That is disgusting

Tesla73 · 23/07/2021 13:32

Hope their membership takes a huge tumble

Especially now businesses are playing catch up because of the pandemic hopefully women will take their cash elsewhere

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 23/07/2021 13:38

I really hope women cancel their membership and tell them exactly why. What a load of b0llocks!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/07/2021 13:40

Fuck. I am a member and can't afford to take my cash elsewhere. I have messaged them to confirm.

PronounssheRa · 23/07/2021 13:58

God that's grim, any man can use the female changing areas if that is where they feel most comfortable. If women don't like it they can use the accessible facilities.

So women lose out, then people with disabilities lose out, while men have the freedom to go anywhere they choose.

IvyTwines2 · 23/07/2021 13:59

And they advise "we have an easy access / gender neutral toilet which can be used as an alternative to the male and female changing rooms. #PureHelp" . So how does that square with the EA for disabled people?

PronounssheRa · 23/07/2021 14:04

Puregym is a 24 hour gym, lots of time where it will be unstaffed.

FionnulaTheCooler · 23/07/2021 14:06

I believe Bannatynes still has single sex facilities, unless Duncan Bannatyne has done a u-turn on that in recent months since he spoke out about it.

NonnyMouse1337 · 23/07/2021 14:07

Looks like they have deleted the tweet.

NonnyMouse1337 · 23/07/2021 14:10

And posted another one instead. 🙄

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/07/2021 14:10

Their new reply is a lot more woolly!

PronounssheRa · 23/07/2021 14:12

@NonnyMouse1337

Looks like they have deleted the tweet.
They have, it was an open invitation to any abusive male "here is how you get access to the womens changing room".

Idiots.

Bankey · 23/07/2021 15:05

Is it ironic that they've sent this email out today about unstaffed hours and keeping safe?

For any Puregym regulars....
Leafstamp · 23/07/2021 15:06

Sorry, I have just posted a duplicate thread, but am inclined to leave it there for the sunlight/links:

BigGreenOlives · 23/07/2021 15:10

So actually women would be safer using the men’s changing rooms as the decent men would be in there.

KittenKong · 23/07/2021 15:16

Pure gym - the 24 hour gym where you could be there at 3am with minimal or bugger all staff? Oh yes what can go wrong?

There’s one near us and a few hospitals and student accommodation dorms, so yes, there would be people on there at daft hours.

Yeah, what could possibly go wrong?

NiceGerbil · 23/07/2021 15:18

The fact they are not staffed 24 hours makes this extra concerning.

I know a lot of women who use them already only go during staffed hours. Women often carry out their own risk assessments quietly and impose restrictions on their own behaviour as they see fit. We do this all the time.

When they say that a member of staff should be alerted if problems. Is their expectation already essentially that the non staffed hours are male only?

In other words are they taking the fact that women restrict their own freedoms in a variety of ways as... Natural and to be expected? Automatic?

Hmmmmm.

miri1985 · 23/07/2021 15:21

The thing that doesn't get explained is that indecent exposure is still indecent exposure. If you tell a man use whatever changing room you feel most comfortable with and he uses the womens changing room and women see him undressed that is indecent exposure.

There have been loads of cases in mixed changing rooms of men showering nude or walking around nude and being convicted, if you're exposing yourself in a single sex changing room, its even more obvious of your intent.

Places like puregym would have no leg to stand on if they're drawn into a case for not only facilitating something like this but practically encouraging it.

I think there would also be an interesting privacy case to be taken if a woman was changing in what she presumed were female only facilites and there was a man present

This is what I came to say, there is CCTV in the main gym to protect customers but why bother if they're going to welcome the most risky group into the women's changing room anyway?! I knew it wasn't safe there.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/07/2021 15:46

I already avoid the unstaffed hours as I would feel unsafe.

The thing about PIN codes for changing rooms is wrong too - they only require a PIN overnight.

KittenKong · 23/07/2021 15:46

There used to be a person who attended my old Pure Gym. They would go into the one classroom that we had and pose in front of the large mirrors (just posing on yoga balls and checking themselves out, full hair, makeup and nails).

We were once filing in for a class, and there they were. The woman next to me said ‘excuse me - there’s a class starting, you’ll need to leave now’.

So she yelled at her to get lost/mind your own business/who are you talking to... and threatened to take her outside a beat her up.

Yes. Changing rooms open to wherever you feel comfortable... grand. Now they may not have felt comfortable in the other changing room (loads of hefty blokes who looked like bullfrogs on steroids - all tattoos and muscles), and that’s just not on (why are they not being told to behave?). But they have said there’s a ‘neutral’ changing room too?

A Pure has opened up next to my office and I was thinking ‘great when things open up I need a new gym’. Not on your Nelly.

KittenKong · 23/07/2021 15:47

My old one used the PIN all the time. I bloody hated the ‘air lock’ entry.
iBrows · 23/07/2021 15:47

I’ve just cancelled. This has become ridiculous.

NiceGerbil · 23/07/2021 15:54

I think indecent exposure needs a motivation to cause distress or alarm etc

Nudist places are allowed
And women changing with other women would be committing an offence otherwise
