They've stated on Twitter that their communal changing rooms are NOT single-sex and that any woman who wants to be sure of not changing with men should use the gender-neutral toilets. So that's nice.

If you're going to say men can freely enter the no-CCTV female spaces, so it turns into a "he said / she said" about what happens in there, then women are at great risk.

Exactly. There is no CCTV in the changing room, and if a male 'has the right' to use the female changing room because they chose the female changing room PIN when signing up, then there is zero protection for women against whatever could happen in that changing room.

This is horrifying!

PronounssheRa · 23/07/2021 17:27

Time to take business elsewhere.

Bannatyne gyms still have single sex changing rooms as far as I know.

As do fitness first mobile.twitter.com/FitnessFirst_UK/status/1418555012649832448

My local anytime fitness has individual changing rooms all self contained. Best check your local one before you commit to any contract.

EdgeOfACoin · 23/07/2021 17:28

Yes, every high street gym I've been to has communal changing rooms (no individual cubicles whatsoever). The showers are all in cubicles, but there are always gaps above and below the doors, and usually there is no lock. Some showers have frosted glass. At busy times, women queue for a shower wearing only a towel.

Virgin Active also segregate according to gender identity rather than sex.

Quite why any woman would feel comfortable sharing such a set-up with a male-bodied person who claims to identify as female, I don't know.

Tbh, city centre gyms have been hugely hit by COVID. I'm amazed this is a stand they want to take.

Good to see that Fitness First still offer single sex changing rooms.

Onlinedilema · 23/07/2021 17:32

Oh fuck. I'm making sure dd is no longer a member. I urge everyone to boycott this organisation.

Redapplewreath · 23/07/2021 17:33

Puregym: Men, go in any space that makes you happy to be in

Women: suck it up or change in a loo, while punishing disabled people at the same time. You pay membership fees for the privilege of being the second class citizens to our priority clientele.

The hypocrisy and idiocy and misogyny and ableism is absolutely mind bending. Did anyone see that tweet of all the board members (line of smiley white blokes) and note that the absolute lack of any diversity at all at this level may possibly have something to do with their problem here?

Onlinedilema · 23/07/2021 17:35

I use my council gym. Women and men's changing rooms with individual shower cubicles and individual toilet cubicles. Also lots of staff about.

Redapplewreath · 23/07/2021 17:37

Anyone want to get hold of Boris and repeat slowly and gently in very small words that the obesity and fitness problem of the UK is not going to be helped by a country that is systematically excluding all but the most privileged women from access to gyms and sport, and making these spaces all about men?

Inclusion also applies to female people. The Equality Act has more than one characteristic. you absolute ruddy muppets

Callmejudith · 23/07/2021 17:39

Cancelled my membership today and stated this as a reason. I would never ever go on unstaffed times and even when staffed the staff are not to be seen.

EishetChayil · 23/07/2021 17:40

As a woman I would rather chew my own arm off than attend an unstaffed gym, especially in the middle of the night.

howmuchistoomuch2021 · 23/07/2021 17:43

The pure gym near me locks the changing room up at nighttime so no one has access at unstaffed times

ifIwerenotanandroid · 23/07/2021 17:44

Thing is, they're not really separating by gender, are they? As someone on twitter pointed out, if they were doing it by gender they'd have a hundred different changing rooms, one for each gender.

BaronMunchausen · 23/07/2021 17:44

@Mulletsaremisunderstood

I really hope women cancel their membership and tell them exactly why. What a load of b0llocks!
Cancelling gym membership is notoriously difficult. In this case a key legal point is that they have made an important change to the contract by doing away with single sex changing areas.
TheWeeDonkey · 23/07/2021 17:51

My son used to go to Pure Gym and he stopped using the changing rooms because he said there were always naked men walking round preening. No just from the shower to their locker but posing and making a show of themselves.
If its enough to make a lad in his late teens feel uncomfortable how do they think it will make women feel?

rogdmum · 23/07/2021 17:52

PureGym membership is very easy to cancel. There’s no notice period other than doing it 4 days before your next payment is due. It’s one of the bits they promote re membership.

Jackgrealishscurtains · 23/07/2021 17:53

The thing is, this is what a society of 'self-id' actually means in real life, on the ground. Its the same as the WiSpa thing.

TRAs and woke bros can talk about how 'bigoted' we are, how this story and that story is a 'hoax', how trans people are not to blame etc etc. But this is the logical conclusion of self id - a total end of female spaces, because any man can gain access just on his own say so, just by saying that he feels 'more comfortable' in the female changing rooms, even when that space is 'protected' by a PIN number.

I wonder what the 'do you really think a predatory man is going to go to the trouble of pretending he is a woman to gain access to female spaces' brigade have to say about Pure Gym's policy?

Jackgrealishscurtains · 23/07/2021 17:55

I have to say, as a woman, the thought of going to an unstaffed gym late at night gives me the total heebie geebies, even without the changing room bit.

That particular USP must be pretty much solely aimed towards men surely?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 23/07/2021 18:01

I hope women's fees are a lot less than men's...

NiceGerbil · 23/07/2021 18:08

They could get the men to subsidise the women's fees for charging extra if they want to use the womens changing areas?

Howcanthisbe123 · 23/07/2021 18:15

Back in 2018 they come under fire for kicking a trans women out the ladies changing rooms, so they probably feel like they can’t win.

However it’s best to upset 1% of the population than it is to upset 51% surly.

Not by any female users of their gyms, I'll bet.

Quite.

Have they surveyed how many users they are supporting at the cost of their entire female and disabled clientele and what's that in numbers?

As we often say too: survey all clients. Women who are confidently happy to get naked with male bodied strangers are welcome to use a unisex space, that's great. Make the male changing room unisex and those women can go in there. Or provide a third mixed sex space. Meet all needs, not just some at the expense of others.

Kerberos · 23/07/2021 19:09

Where do Transmen go? I've often wondered this. They'd be equally out of place in a male changing room (or prison for example).

ArtemesiaK · 23/07/2021 19:10

The good thing is that this must surely be reported in the mainstream news, bringing more sunshine?.....

Howcanthisbe123 · 23/07/2021 19:12

Looks like the tweet has been deleted, it’s not coming up now

NiceGerbil · 23/07/2021 19:13

I wonder if PureGym will have s big upsurge in New joiners who ticked woman...
