You can really start to feel some of the issues cutting through at last in the media discussion of Helen Joyce's book. Sex Matters have decided to build on this by asking people to sponsor a copy of the book to be sent to their MP, headteacher of their children's school, employer, HR department, or other policy maker.

"Please sponsor a gift copy to be sent to your Member of Parliament, or devolved national legislature, or to someone else.

Tell us who you’d like to send your gift to, and we’ll put it in the post with a Sex Matters card and your personal message."

Yes when you can donate a little I think thousands would, rather than hundreds of people having a set amount.

I just donated a small amount to the Vancouver rape relief and women's shelter, I'd imagine thousands would do that which makes my little seem not so silly.

Just listened to Helen Joyce's interview with Brendan O' Neill on his podcast. I highly recommend it as it is v clear and thoughtful. It would also be a good way to get pp you know interested in this subject. I listened on Spotify but I'm sure it's on other platforms too.

@Anotheruser02

My MP has a copy, 44% of MP's do now. I can't afford that amount for a book for someone else as much as I'd love to help make that 100%. I wish there was a way of donating an amount of your choice, I'd pledge a fiver and I'd bet many would who couldn't afford £17.
I'm sure if you messaged Sex Matters about that, it's something they would consider
Appalonia · 30/07/2021 20:56

@Anotheruser02 I'm friends with Maya on FB, so I just sent her your suggestion. Smile

Anotheruser02 · 30/07/2021 21:03

Thank you, we crossed there I did take up your suggestion and messaged Sex Matters.

@MsFogi

As an aside to this wonderful initiative - I also donated three copies of Invisible Women to my local girls' non-selective secondary school when it came out (two for the library, one for the staffroom), just in case anyone wants to send more books to schools!
How did you do this? Did you just buy them and post them to the school, or did you contact them?
CarryOn1 · 30/07/2021 22:58

Agree with above poster. It would be great to chip in towards a book. I don't have £17 spare for this but would happily give a couple of quid now and again where I'm able. Sorry to sound so tragic, extended maternity leave (for birth related health reasons) has not helped my finances!

I am wondering about sending to one of the CoE bishops as the way the church is going is not looking promising.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2021 23:13

not likely to be something my local library would carry either!

Maybe ask them to order it? It's not on the proscribed list! It's a bestseller. Show them people want to read this type of thing.

I can't afford to donate a copy, but this is a good idea. I may have snapped at my very lovely Vicar last week when she started talking about "gender assigned at birth" Blush

The coverage of this year's Olympics has been dominated by female presenters, who are doing a fantastic job. I assume they are not allowed to speak out. However after the Olympics they may be more free to express their views? Perhaps a book or two might help them to find their courage and speak out?

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 31/07/2021 10:11

I sent my MP one but I didn't write anything to him. It was late at night and my mind was blank x

Anotheruser02 · 31/07/2021 10:26

I had a response from Sex Matters, the idea of being able to donate towards MP's books without paying the whole amount will be flagged to the team.

gailforce1 · 03/08/2021 15:33

I have just donated a copy to my local (Tory) MP.
I would also like to send a copy to Martyn Ziegler the Chief Sports Reporter of The Times - does anyone know what postal address it should be sent to?

I have been wondering who to lend my copy to after I finish it, I was thinking my manager but one of my friends is a local vicar, though he is very GC already.

UK law requires public libraries to stock any uk published book currently in print if any local resident requests it.

From Glinners substack - looks like more soft censorship of Helens book

I've done as Glinner suggests here and have emailed them asking why they havent had the best selling local author in to sign copies. Also why, with businesses being hit by the pandemic, they arent falling over themselves to stock guaranteed sellers

Glad to see my MP already on the list - although I doubt it’ll make any difference, I’ve emailed her before with concerns and requests for her to attend meetings re this. She is a career politician in the Lib Dem so very TWAW.
Will be recommending the book at my book group. They loved Invisible Women which I recommended so hopefully they’ll give me the benefit of the doubt on this one.

WinterTrees · 21/09/2021 14:24

I'd really love to know the sales figures for both Helen Joyce's book and Shon Faye's. I'd bet my last rolo that, in spite of the hugely increased shelf space and promotion old 'enjoy ur erasure' has had, the Helen's sales will knock theirs into a cocked hat.

midgemagneto · 21/09/2021 14:47

Apparently ingram will let you search sales data based on ISBN

WarriorN · 21/09/2021 18:24

This is illuminating.
