Helen Joyce's Book is Changing the Debate

You can really start to feel some of the issues cutting through at last in the media discussion of Helen Joyce's book. Sex Matters have decided to build on this by asking people to sponsor a copy of the book to be sent to their MP, headteacher of their children's school, employer, HR department, or other policy maker.

"Please sponsor a gift copy to be sent to your Member of Parliament, or devolved national legislature, or to someone else.

Tell us who you’d like to send your gift to, and we’ll put it in the post with a Sex Matters card and your personal message."

Interestingly, the vast majority (if not actually all) the bad reviews on Amazon are from unverified purchases. Hmmm. 🤔

A pity people are reviewing without reading. It would be good, healthy and helpful to hear actual criticism from those who have read it.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 26/07/2021 13:06

@ArabellaScott

Currently #10 on Amazon, btw.
That's amazing. It shows the sheer level of interest in/ exasperation with the whole ideology.
Skinnytailedsquirrel · 26/07/2021 13:55

Nicola bloody Sturgeon, destroyer of women's rights should read this book.

ChristinaXYZ · 26/07/2021 19:06

Sex Matters have tweeted that they have had sponsorship for over 500 copies of the book meaning over 250 MPs and many other influential people have been sent copies. I hope the scheme keeps going.

That's amazing news, I so hope that every single one of the people who are sent a copy will read it.

FemaleAndLearning · 26/07/2021 21:17

The National Autistic Society should be sent a copy, they are full on with gender ideology and lots of young, autistic girls are very susceptible to the ideology.

Taswama · 26/07/2021 21:35

Very tempted to send a copy to our E&D manager at work. Or the headteacher at DS's secondary school, which are Stonewall champions.
The first one would have to be anonymous I think.

MsFogi · 27/07/2021 14:16

The CEO and E&D lead at every Stonewalled company and the head of every Stonewall champion school need to receive a copy of this book. I do hope Sex Matters adds these as categories once all the MPs are done (I know people can nominate someone but if there is a list people can contact them to ask what they thought of the book Grin).

Taswama · 27/07/2021 17:01

Yes my company is part of the stonewall club too, didn't make the FOI list in a previous action unfortunately and couldn't see a way of getting them added anonymously.

@GCAcademic

I see Pumpkin is resorting to the childish one-sentence posts as usual. I’ve never seen an actual thought, never mind an argument, emanate from that poster. Some people are very limited when they try to function beyond Twitter.
Their posts have genuinely opened the eyes of at least one person I know (and cemented the lack of argument on 'the other side' for another).
niceberg · 27/07/2021 19:49

Brilliant idea. Have donated/ nominated. My MP is already on there so I was happy to choose someone else important in my area.

For the webinar - I didn't realise that Helen Joyce had spent some time working on the Public Understanding of Science in Cambridge. This makes a lot of sense as to why she writes so clearly.

HJ describes herself as a journalist and not an activist. Her attention was caught by the problems of an ideology that hadn't been thought through. She describes her writing style for this as 'icily angry'.

She emphasises the values of robust debate, freedom of speech, human dignity and respect for people's autonomy. It's not necessary for everyone to agree with eachother.

Justine Roberts - Has the reaction been worse than anticipated?

Helen Joyce - She was braced for a smear campaign so she expected that. She had anticipated it being a Top 10 Sunday Times bestseller when at one point her Plan B had been to self-publish this.

MN Webinar

Helen Joyce: It's been a lot of work but she was drawn to write the book. She learned how to write a proposal, locate an agent and an editor. She went through the process of learning that her editor was right (I paraphrase).

Justine Roberts: There's a divide in how feminists view this issue that tends to be split by age. It tends to be motherhood that can be the prompt to take a different view.

Helen Joyce: Women have natural dividing points, having children and the menopause. There's a lot of ageism in play. For young women, it feels like you're valued, and there's no struggle ahead. Then motherhood happens and it radicalises women. It's why MN is a place for this. It's why MN is a subaltern group (this was unclear).

Thanks Mumsnet for the chat with Helen .. really enjoyed it.

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles · 27/07/2021 21:07

Great Webinar. Thank you very much Helen and Justine.

Fallingirl · 27/07/2021 21:21

Got home late and missed the first half of the webinar. Does anyone know where and when we can find the recording?

CardinalLolzy · 27/07/2021 21:36

Couldn't attend - (assume this is the Zoom chat) - would love to know if it can be watched anywhere official?

I couldn't work out how to change my name and then I burbled on about DPD not delivering the book Blush

iirc, only Premium user MNers will be able to watch it.

we are planning to record the session and like all our Zoomchats it will be available to watch again for our premium users.

Witsended · 28/07/2021 03:40

anyone got suggestions of wording for a CEO of a FTSE500 company (and stonewall champion)?

I want to donate but I'm rubbish at getting my point across well

MerchedCymru · 28/07/2021 16:44

That's fantastic - sending them to your MPs, and so generous!

Lets hope they take the time to read and take on board the information and implications. In Wales there's a push to crowd fund, raising money to send every Senedd member a copy. If you're based in Wales (or feeling particularly philanthropic), you may want to bung a few quid in the pot.

LOLeater · 28/07/2021 17:14

Just ordered my copy but also donated to Sex Matters so that the Headteacher at our local secondary school also receives one. I included a brief and cheerful message as well as my name. Wonder how it will be received but this issue is too important to us all for me to let others do the digging.

Sex Matters is an amazing organisation and I am delighted by the energy and commitment of those at the helm.

GrimDamnFanjo · 28/07/2021 17:42

This is such a good idea. I'm just thinking who I should send mine to..
