Helen Joyce's Book is Changing the Debate

You can really start to feel some of the issues cutting through at last in the media discussion of Helen Joyce's book. Sex Matters have decided to build on this by asking people to sponsor a copy of the book to be sent to their MP, headteacher of their children's school, employer, HR department, or other policy maker.

"Please sponsor a gift copy to be sent to your Member of Parliament, or devolved national legislature, or to someone else.

Tell us who you’d like to send your gift to, and we’ll put it in the post with a Sex Matters card and your personal message."

As an aside to this wonderful initiative - I also donated three copies of Invisible Women to my local girls' non-selective secondary school when it came out (two for the library, one for the staffroom), just in case anyone wants to send more books to schools!

I'm torn between sending one to my Tory MP, who seems like a nice man, and my daughter's housemate, who has a vocal coven of "be kind" female friends, in spite of being in a responsible NHS job where safeguarding is involved. Just don't understand how women can support the destruction of women's rights and the brainwashing of children (and she is in her forties, too, so no excuse)....

SnoopyLights · 28/07/2021 20:13

I know Sex Matters have said that they won't sent multiple copies to the same person and they have a list of names of people who will be receiving a copy to prevent duplication.

But it would be interesting if they told each person how many people wanted to send them a book. They might get one copy and think it's easily dismissible, but if they were told they had five, ten, fifty, a hundred people (voters) all nominating them for the book it might make them think a bit more.

JaninaDuszejko · 29/07/2021 07:30

I think they said all messages would be included with the book.

Show me the third gamete, and then we can talk. And no, you be kind

Just spotted this rather good comment by Helen Joyce - nothing to add (unless I missed it upthread in which case sorry)

@EarthSight

Have you seen this *@MerchedCymru* ?
Yes its a fab initiative. There's a group based in Wales who are raising funds to send copies to Senedd members. Good to see (and contribute to). They are hoping to get £901 and are already a third of the way there!

You can find it here www.crowdfunder.co.uk/issuing-senedd-members-with-helen-joyces-trans

Callmejudith · 29/07/2021 17:18

This is a genius idea. Mine is already on the list

ArtemesiaK · 30/07/2021 12:33

Sent one to my Conservative MP, I doubt he's even heard of the issues...
Hope he'll read it....

I was intending to sponsor one for my MP but it's already been done.

I'll just donate into the general pool - inevitably, I'm curious as to who did this but I'd no more name my own MP to find out than I'd expect anyone else too.

GrandmaMazur · 30/07/2021 13:32

Have sent one to my MP today. Am booked in to talk to him later in the year about women’s prisons so would really help if he reads this first!

WorriedWishingWell · 30/07/2021 13:40

Does the recipient know who the sponsor is?

WorriedWishingWell · 30/07/2021 13:46

@WorriedWishingWell

Does the recipient know who the sponsor is?
No, not unless you want them to. Answering my own question here 😃

Yes, good point.

If you do find your MP is already a recipient, perhaps worth writing to urge her/him to read the book.

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/07/2021 14:03

My Labour MP is on the list. She's full on TWAW, as for sports: women should just try harder.
I'm thinking of writing to her and asking her to donate it to our local library when she's read it.

aliensprig · 30/07/2021 14:54

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Trans cheaply? Can't justify £13 on a book atm and desperate to read it 😭 not likely to be something my local library would carry either!

If you're in the UK then your library should be able to obtain an inter-library loan for you on request.
aliensprig · 30/07/2021 15:00

@EmbarrassingAdmissions thanks, I'll give that a go 👍

MsFogi · 30/07/2021 15:13

EmbarrassingAdmissions, your post makes me think it would be a good idea if all GC women order this from their local libraries (even if they have their own copy) - that way we could ensure it is available in many, many libraries around the country. I may do the same for Invisible Women and a few other select books so that my local library starts to see the demand for a bit of GC feminist literature....

mollythemeerkat · 30/07/2021 16:24

@Rubidium

Well done whoever donated a copy for Lloyd Russell Moyle
Yes, someone beat me to it!
DevonTF · 30/07/2021 16:29

If anyones MP is already done - please consider sending one to the CEO of The Body Shop. We don't forget

Indeed! And the CEOs of any companies that are stonewall members and the head teachers of any secondary schools in your area (particularly Stonewall champions but I suspect they could all do with a copy!).

mollythemeerkat · 30/07/2021 17:57

Sent to a slightly dim witted Labour MP who doesnt seem to understand the issues and could do with some help but does like to sound off about being wokey. And the headteacher of the local secondary school.

DrDetriment · 30/07/2021 18:18

Great idea. I've sent a copy to the all girls school I used to go to.

Anotheruser02 · 30/07/2021 20:06

My MP has a copy, 44% of MP's do now. I can't afford that amount for a book for someone else as much as I'd love to help make that 100%.

I wish there was a way of donating an amount of your choice, I'd pledge a fiver and I'd bet many would who couldn't afford £17.

There seem to be some groups clubbing together to fund books for various people. It would be helpful if this allowed people to donate what they can afford. As ever, it's true that every little helps.
