Helen Joyce's Book is Changing the Debate

You can really start to feel some of the issues cutting through at last in the media discussion of Helen Joyce's book. Sex Matters have decided to build on this by asking people to sponsor a copy of the book to be sent to their MP, headteacher of their children's school, employer, HR department, or other policy maker.

"Please sponsor a gift copy to be sent to your Member of Parliament, or devolved national legislature, or to someone else.

Tell us who you’d like to send your gift to, and we’ll put it in the post with a Sex Matters card and your personal message."

Done. Our local MP hadn't had the honour yet.

Jasmine11 · 23/07/2021 13:31

Thanks for posting this OP - I've sent it to the head of my department (university). She doesn't seem to have drunk the cool-aid yet, but there are more and more people in the dept putting pro-nouns of their signatures.

Perfect, I’ll look into that post payday.

SnoopyLights · 23/07/2021 18:13

@ValancyRedfern

Yes there's an option to make your donation anonymous
Lovely, thank you. I'm going to make my donation then. My MP isn't there either so I might be making more than one.

That was supposed to quote and reply to @MySecretHistory

exwhyzed
Do you have a link for the OJ tantrum? I may need to send out for extra popcorn.

ArabellaScott · 23/07/2021 20:16

Fantastic idea. Not convinced my MP actually reads much beyond his own bio, but am sending as an opener, in any case.

Thanks, Sex Matters!

MMM2 · 23/07/2021 20:22

Carrie Johnson anybody?

JaninaDuszejko · 23/07/2021 20:50

Nominated my new dreadful Conservative MP. When I wrote to our old (excellent) female Labour MP about transwomen in prisons I got a reasonable if guarded reply but when I wrote to this new MP about the census the reply made it quite clear he disagreed with me. So in my letter I referenced my email, pointed out ONS was forced in court to change their guidance and suggested he read the book to become better acquainted with the conflict between women and trans rights. Doubt it will make a difference but happy to donate money to the good fight.

Wriggleon · 23/07/2021 21:05

Nominated my local MSP, did it anonymously which I'm slightly annoyed with myself about

Gabcsika · 23/07/2021 21:13

Someone please send it to James O'Brien!

Whinginadeville · 23/07/2021 21:16

Placemarking for use tomorrow

Great idea. I have sent to my MP, who met me to discuss the census issues, seemed sympathetic, but subsequently fobbed me off.

If your MP has already been sent a copy, please consider Nick Gibb or Gavin Williamson as the DfE is very taken with a version of diversity that is all about identity and is only belatedly (and I suspect temporarily) waking up to the notion of SEXual harassment and SEXual assault in schools.

@Gabcsika

Someone please send it to James O'Brien!
I should think he might receive multiple nominations!

He's so determined not to change his mind that I'd be impressed if he read it.

But if he read it, couldn't find a thing to critique reasonably, and didn't feel the need to think again - then he'd lose his (self-espoused) status as someone who promotes evidence-based thought and rationality.

EdgeOfACoin · 23/07/2021 21:51

I saw a small review on Medium from someone who tried to 'rebut' the book.

Literally the only thing they could manage was that Joyce was wrong to say that mammals gestate their young because platypuses exist. Therefore the book was based on shoddy science and trans people are analogous to platypuses (ie not possible to categorise according to traditional definitions).

That was all they could say.

Seconding Gavin Williamson. He is one of a number of Tory Secretaries of State for Education (Damian Hinds and Justine Greening being the others) in collaboration with the civil service who have handed over children and schools to organisations like Stonewall, Mermaids, GIRES (and the rest) to promote their toxic beliefs, openly removing a variety of safeguarding measures and creating a climate of fear and intimidation for children that prevents them establishing personal boundaries.

Nice change from clownfish.

Davros · 23/07/2021 22:10

I've sent one to my MP - Sir Keir Starmer. Not anonymous, I wonder if he'll come at me. More likely be ignored

SigrunGard · 23/07/2021 22:10

I’ve sent one to my MP - Labour marginal which switched from Tory in the election before last

Davros · 23/07/2021 22:52

Has anyone sent a copy to Sian Berry?

TidyDancer · 24/07/2021 08:38

What a fantastic idea this is. My (Tory) MP is on the list. I will sponsor another copy anyway.

Tontu · 24/07/2021 09:07

I'm sending one to my Labour MP, and maybe my daughters headteachers too.
Thanks for sharing the message Iamnot
