Helen Joyce's Book is Changing the Debate

You can really start to feel some of the issues cutting through at last in the media discussion of Helen Joyce's book. Sex Matters have decided to build on this by asking people to sponsor a copy of the book to be sent to their MP, headteacher of their children's school, employer, HR department, or other policy maker.

"Please sponsor a gift copy to be sent to your Member of Parliament, or devolved national legislature, or to someone else.

Tell us who you’d like to send your gift to, and we’ll put it in the post with a Sex Matters card and your personal message."

You misspelt "people are laughing at how badly written Helen Joyce's book is".

I don't think so Grin

JustcameoutGC · 24/07/2021 15:21

Human beings aren't duck billed platypus doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

jhuizinga · 24/07/2021 15:25

Have you read the book PumpkinSpice? I finished it in a couple of afternoons and found it extremely readable. I didn't come across any antisemitism in it - can you clarify?

The idea of sending the book to MPs is excellent. I've sponsored one for my MP. I do hope he, as well as others in influential positions, read it because it is so clear, factual and reasonable.

partystress · 24/07/2021 15:55

Gavin Williamson now on the list, but Nick Gibb, probably more influential in schools, still not been added. Amanda Spielman might be another worthy recipient, along with CEOs of JLP and M&S.

Helen Joyce mentions the distraction tactics of the slur at about 10mins in this interview with Maya Forstater for Sex Matters (should start at right spot):

GCAcademic · 24/07/2021 17:18

I see Pumpkin is resorting to the childish one-sentence posts as usual. I’ve never seen an actual thought, never mind an argument, emanate from that poster. Some people are very limited when they try to function beyond Twitter.

reprehensibleme · 24/07/2021 20:32

Pumpkinspice, the master of the plop and run.

WoollyHeadedMammoth · 24/07/2021 21:07

I don't agree with Mumsnet deleting their post, or mine, without comment. If there was antisemitism, I want to hear about it. If the criticism of Joyce stems from stupid kids opportunistically pretending that there's antisemitism where none exists, that could be antisemitic in its own right and actionable under UK law. I'm not comfortable just saying some arsehole posted nonsense and it was removed. These arseholes are posting shite all over the internet that throws Jews (they've likely never met one) under the bus in order to promte misogyny, and that is not OK.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 24/07/2021 21:32

WoollyHeadedMammoth No evidence or quotation was given beyond a bald assertion.

If you seek specifics of the slur that do not rely upon quotations from Helen Joyce's writing then it's readily available from any search engine or Twitter. I will not reproduce the terms of the slur because of the way that search algorithms work because the slur is unfounded and it is colluding in the manipulative smear campaign against Joyce's book.

The video above has some discussion of the slur. At 14:20, Helen Joyce discusses the reaction of her colleagues, a number of whom are Jewish, and have gone online to support her and deny the slur.

WoollyHeadedMammoth · 24/07/2021 23:10

Thank you, EmbarrassingAdmissions. I don't seek to find antisemitism whre it isn't, or isn't obvious. I wanted to give "PumpkinSpiceWoman" a chance to respond, before I say that "PumpkinSpiceWoman" is an absolute iredeemable arsehole for pretending to care about antisemitism whilst being an antisemite themself, which is what it very much looks like.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/07/2021 09:03

Just checking in to say that I have just finished Helen Joyce's book, and no, no evidence anywhere of any anti-semitism.

@PumpkinSpiceWoman, you should be ashamed of yourself.

567fedup · 25/07/2021 09:16

Great idea. I've noticed that the transactivists are doing this already (forget the name of the book).
Unfortunately my MP is a massive transactivist themselves.

aubreyii · 25/07/2021 09:21

It's a bloody brilliant book

TidyDancer · 25/07/2021 09:22

Same here @GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman. It's an excellent and well researched book. But pumpkinspicewoman does this on many, many threads on this board. Very weird.

Interestingly, the vast majority (if not actually all) the bad reviews on Amazon are from unverified purchases. Hmmm. 🤔

SnoopyLights · 25/07/2021 18:45

I've done it. I've donated a copy, I chose to be anonymous and I'm slightly scared they'll accidentally send my name or my email with it, but I've done it.

I hope my person reads it. I hope it makes them think twice on the issue. I hope it makes the right points.

That's always the way with books on this subject, I aways report those reviews. Nothing happens but I live in hope. I've seen some reviews point out that the critical reviews are unverified before.

RoyalCorgi · 25/07/2021 18:55

Seconding Gavin Williamson. He is one of a number of Tory Secretaries of State for Education (Damian Hinds and Justine Greening being the others) in collaboration with the civil service who have handed over children and schools to organisations like Stonewall, Mermaids, GIRES (and the rest) to promote their toxic beliefs, openly removing a variety of safeguarding measures and creating a climate of fear and intimidation for children that prevents them establishing personal boundaries.

A little while back I saw one of those articles about what politicians are reading at the moment, and saw that Gavin Williamson was reading "Our Bodies, Their Battlefield", Christina Lamb's harrowing book about rape as a weapon of war. It seemed unlikely (and I can't now find the article on the internet, so am starting to wonder if I dreamt it) but he did go up in my estimation after that.

Anyway, assuming I haven't misremembered it, it does suggest he is open to reading books on feminist topics, so perhaps it's not completely hopeless to send him Joyce's book.

Appalonia · 25/07/2021 19:04

I think we need to send one to Jeremy Vine!

Speakingofdinosaurs · 25/07/2021 19:10

I’ve donated a copy! Added my heartfelt message to it!

Appalonia · 25/07/2021 20:06

Wow such a fantastic, thought provoking interview with Helen and Maya, please do watch it. I particularly liked Helen's open mindedness, pleas to be strategic and to listen to other viewpoints, and to not get into pointless Twitter spats with pp who only have 45 followers!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/07/2021 20:28

I like Helen Joyce's relentless focus on the prize. What is your outcome here? If it's no more medical sterilisation of children in the service of this ideology - and to reverse the policy capture of our organisations - either or both must be at the heart of all the actions that will take your time and resources.

The fight will be relentless - we need to expend our resources wisely.

Rubidium · 25/07/2021 21:23

Well done whoever donated a copy for Lloyd Russell Moyle

exwhyzed · 25/07/2021 22:32

I've sponsored one for someone in my organisation for personal reasons but if I was able to I would have liked to have also sent them to Shelagh Fogarty from LBC, Skye Huntley from Jeremy Vine, Naga Munchetty and Mrs Hinch.

EwwSprouts · 25/07/2021 22:41

TheAliceRoberts professor of public engagement in science has seemed to struggle to say anything more than #bekind. Maybe she needs some summer reading?

CrossPurposes · 25/07/2021 23:01

I've sponsored a copy to be sent to my MP but I would like to nominate Roly Keating, chief executive of the British Library.

ArabellaScott · 25/07/2021 23:26

Currently #10 on Amazon, btw.
