Helen Joyce's Book is Changing the Debate

You can really start to feel some of the issues cutting through at last in the media discussion of Helen Joyce's book. Sex Matters have decided to build on this by asking people to sponsor a copy of the book to be sent to their MP, headteacher of their children's school, employer, HR department, or other policy maker.

"Please sponsor a gift copy to be sent to your Member of Parliament, or devolved national legislature, or to someone else.

Tell us who you’d like to send your gift to, and we’ll put it in the post with a Sex Matters card and your personal message."

Unless it takes off in a way that wasn't expected by her or her publishers and would start necessitating additional print runs

Early signs are good so let’s hope so Grin 🤞

My MP has already been listed, and I am now desperate to know by whom, as I know no one in my constituency who is GC. It doesn’t mean that they live even within a couple of miles of me, as it is a large rural constituency, but it would be lovely to just know.
I will still sponsor a copy, think its a great idea!

potniatheron · 23/07/2021 09:15

We've now had three really important GC / feminist books published in the past year: Abigail Shrier's, Helen Joyce's and Kathleen Stock's. This means that modern GC feminism has come out of social media and is now properly established in the academy and public life. This is really important as GC feminists have a good body of work to refer to. The TRAs have very little in terms of good literature justifying their beliefs other than the creepy pornographic imaginings of the likes of Paris Lees and Andrea Long Chu. This is good. The tide is turning.

What a fantastic organisation Sex Matters is turning out to be

I’ve sent my Labour MP a copy. Felt great! Here’s the message I wrote if anyone is struggling with ideas (as I was at first).

Dear XXXXX

As a XXXXX constituent and Labour voter, I want to share with you my grave concern about Keir Starmer’s vow to reform the Gender Recognition Act and introduce self-ID, allowing individuals to be treated in law as the opposite sex without any oversight or safeguarding.

I am not sure if you are aware of the many factors around self-ID, but as one example we have already had male people (who identify as women) moved to women’s prisons who have then sexually assaulted female prisoners. Most women in prison are themselves from an abusive background and deserve our protection, not to be housed alongside convicted rapists (eg Karen White).

The enclosed book is a terrific introduction to the factors at play, which extend far beyond the prison system, and I urge you to read it and learn what is at stake for women and children in particular.

It can be a challenging and emotive topic to engage with publicly and even privately, but I have every faith in your courage and decency to do so.

With kind regards,
XXXXX

The tide is turning - covert GC people in the public eye are realising this - more will be getting braver as they see there is a groundswell of public opinion against the testerical reactions of the TRAs.

We know who is on the right side of history - and it is becoming blindingly obvious to everyone else.

LangClegsInSpace · 23/07/2021 10:00

I've nominated my MP. I hope someone nominates Sadiq Khan.

jeaux90 · 23/07/2021 10:08

Fab idea. I've done one for my MP who is not a bad egg about this issue anyway. Met him to discuss and he gets it.

There is a really fine body of literature developing, which will be crucial for taking the debate forward, far better to refer somebody to a book than a website.

EishetChayil · 23/07/2021 10:13

I've read the book and very much enjoyed it, however, the chapter on institutional capture really worried me. The trans lobby is so well-funded, especially in the USA. Can we really hope to push back against a lobbying movement that ploughs literal billions of dollars into its work?

I've been wondering about that because it's been such a successful tactic in so many areas (Big Tobacco etc.) that it has allowed clear science to be swamped to give the firms involved the time to create harms on a substantial scale by concentrating on other markets and manipulations.

It would be good to know if there is somebody who can spot a (relatively recent) contemporary area where well funded lobbyists have failed.

MySecretHistory · 23/07/2021 10:27

@KatyaZamolodchikova

My next one is heading to Tracy Brabin, West Yorkshire Mayor (or whatever the title is) and also a woman of Labour. Oooh and maybe one to John Robins, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police? And definitely one for Mark Burns-Williamson, police and crime commissioner for the West Yorkshire Police force area. Roll on Pay Day!
Her unelected deputy mayor has been mentioned on here more than once for the trans views of her charity. Send her one as well
StandUpStraight · 23/07/2021 10:30

My GC MP is on the list already but have sponsored a book. What a great idea. Supporting the author and getting the message out at the same time.

teawamutu · 23/07/2021 10:43

I'd wondered about Starmer, Rayner or Nandy. But I suspect it'd be a waste of money.

We are half the world population so we can and we must. We have the ear of our husbands, daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, wives. We don't need a big lobby. Or money. And we vote.
Cailin66 · 23/07/2021 10:48

Would appreciate it if anyone could tell me is Helen Joyce getting the twitter pile on like JK Rowling.

This is such a strong statement. Thank you.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 23/07/2021 11:04

I think this is a brilliant initiative. It's a shame they're only sending to UK addresses (but I understand why).

For Irish mn's - I have emailed TheCountess.ie to suggest they do similar, particularly as the review if the Equality Act is imminent. In the meantime, I will send one to my SF TD who, surprisingly, responded very positively to the email I sent her.

Thank you - I’ve just sent one to my MP and used your message.

I forgot to look if anyone has sent Jess Phillips a copy. I’m convinced she ‘gets it’.

loveyouradvice · 23/07/2021 12:16

Brilliant initiative - I'm sponsoring several .... and when I've more dosh in a few weeks, will do so again*

They can be sent to anyone ... love how they've described it:

You can nominate anyone in the UK. It might be someone you were at school with, who is now CEO or HR Director of a large company. It might be your boss, or your ex-boss. Maybe you know a senior manager in the NHS; or someone who is a mayor or police commissioner?

Perhaps you think the headteacher at your child’s school should read it. Maybe it’s just a friend who is particularly outgoing, and talks to lots of different people. Maybe you could use it to say a friendly “hello” to someone you’d like to reconnect with.

ValancyRedfern · 23/07/2021 13:04

Just sent to the Head of the secondary dd will likely attend in a couple of years. They are very much down the rabbit hole.

SnoopyLights · 23/07/2021 13:12

I really want to send one to someone important where I work. He's started using pronouns in internal email, he's not doing so in external or public emails. He's only the third person I've seen doing this, the other two are women.

But I really don't want to have my name on it. Would they send the book with just a message but without a name?

ValancyRedfern · 23/07/2021 13:16

Yes there's an option to make your donation anonymous
