Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are you put off booking a holiday in Scotland by the Marion Miller case and the Scottish police carping about stickers?

I know that the chances of being harassed by the police on holiday are minimal but the whole atmosphere: law changes, the SNP attitude to women, the police tweeting about stickers etc - would you really want to holiday in such a pool of chilling effects? It is really changing how I feel about Scotland (in the sense of those currently running it - I'm not blaming the average Scot obviously) and I know if I went there it would be on my mind all the time. Chilling effects do not equal a holiday feeling is what I am saying I guess.

For a long time I had the ambition of moving to Glasgow, where my family are from. I have put it on hold now, indefinitely, because I’m sure I’d say something that would put me in the same boat. Or I’d discuss the Salmond trial with someone and end up in prison like Craig Murray. It’s very chilling indeed.

JustKeep · 03/06/2021 17:07

Yep. We are originally Scottish but I’m a vocal gender critical feminist. I’ve pointed out to my relatives that if I was to holiday there, I could be arrested over my previous tweets/Facebook posts, which they didn’t take seriously as a risk until the last few weeks.

I mean I don’t normally spend my holidays arguing about feminism, but I also won’t be silent and would speak up if I see a man using the women’s loos or whatever.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 03/06/2021 17:16

I always used to joke that much as I’d love to visit Iran, my big gob would get me thrown in the clink before I left the airport.

I never thought I’d be dating the same about Scotland.

ScreamingMeMe · 03/06/2021 18:05

I can't say visiting Scotland any time soon holds any appeal, no.

minsmum · 03/06/2021 18:09

We were talking about moving and my DH mentioned how lovely Scotland is and how nice the Scots are and that we should consider it. A year ago I would have been all for it not now which makes me really sad

talkingdeadscot · 03/06/2021 18:13

I moved to Scotland 4 years ago, now wishing I hadn't and trying to work out if I can afford to move out.

WineAcademy · 03/06/2021 18:16

At one point I considered moving to Scotland. No more.

My partner and I were considering honeymooning there - also probably not now.

ShowOfHands · 03/06/2021 18:18

I'm on holiday in Scotland right now. The neighbour to the cottage we are renting (actually about half a mile away) has a massive sign outside saying something along the lines of "in this house... we believe in science, women's rights are human rights". It made me cheer. Presumably, it's a criminal sign.

cluckandcollect · 03/06/2021 18:19

I was born in Scotland and was hoping to move back to Edinburgh in a couple of years time when I retire. It's not just a whim, it was a serious intention: I've started researching and planning. It breaks my heart to think that I can't go back because Scotland doesn't have freedom of speech. The thought of Scotland gaining independence only to become an authoritarian police state in which women's views are silenced is so horrifying that it literally leaves me feeling sick.

At the moment I wouldn't even want to holiday there. I might be tempted to hang some ribbons from a fence and end up in prison.

bentleydrummle · 03/06/2021 18:24

This honestly breaks my heart. I went to university in Scotland, my best friends live there, I'd visit at least 3/4 times a year in normal pre Covid times. I can't bear what it is becoming.

This is all what I mean! How long until people wake up to the international (and within the UK) reputational damage the Scottish institutions are enacting. I've already told my 6th form age offspring that if they want any financial help at uni from me then don't apply to Scotland. Scottish unis (I believe) like English undergrads as they bring more money with them to the institution. Maybe if they get hit in the pocket with uni applications and holidays then the powers that be will start to think again. We have Liz Truss and the Scots have Joanna Cherry but she lacks the lever of power that LT's cabinet roles give her.

I feel so sorry for Lisa Keogh, Marion Millar and those similarly suffering, and the women of Scotland generally at the moment.

@Fucket

I get the impression that they hate English people. Adding into the mix that the Scottish seem to have some odd ideas about women, I’d feel doubly unwelcome. So no I’m not going to visit any country where most of the people hate me for my sex and my ethnicity.

If the people of Scotland do get their independence then fair play to them. I’m not one of those die-hard Unionists. I have no hatred towards them.

The union thing is interesting. I can't see how Boris and co can square one part of the UK becoming so out of line on free speech and still defend the union. Either they'll have to act to enforce something UK wide or it will be ridiculous. What happens when someone English gets arrested at a Scottish uni or on holiday for saying something that would be legal here? Will there be 'consular assistance'? Like it is a foreign country already? Yet enacting some kind of UK wide legislation in the post-devolution world would be seem provocative to those wanting to separate. It could blow the union apart. Maybe that's what the SNP plan is.

I'll be visiting Scotland on the 20th July with ribbon.

Kona84 · 03/06/2021 18:35

I feel I have totally missed something important.
What is this about?

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 03/06/2021 18:36

Perhaps you could use google?

Thecatonthemat · 03/06/2021 18:38

Kona have a look at the two other threads about the Scottish woman being charged by police....

CroydianSlip · 03/06/2021 18:39

I always thought Scotland would be my place to run away to, but recently I've had to accept it's a place to run away from.

Am absolutely horrified and appalled by what is going on there.

Mojoj · 03/06/2021 18:45

What a complete and utter load of shite. Seriously? The level of ignorance in these posts about what is allegedly happening in nasty old Scotland is breathtaking😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 03/06/2021 18:48

Scottish people don't hate English people, and we don't hate women either, bore off with the antagonist comments please.

I imagine we'll get on fine given the human rights atrocities that other countries have in their history that are much worse than allowing people to self ID.

Before covid people still went to loads of counties with awful women's rights records, do you know its still illegal to be gay in 69 countries?

This has nothing to do with self ID so maybe you shouldn't just jump into a conversation you clearly know nothing about.

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 03/06/2021 18:51

Absolute bollocks, nothing worse going on than anywhere else (although that’s depressing) and the vast majority of us do not ‘hate English people’. I even married one and he manages to live here quite happily Hmm

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 03/06/2021 18:54

Ah forgot a sentence, adding on that well be fine as loads of countries still get loads of visitors pre-covid that have some awful laws regarding sexuality

SoMuchForSummerLove · 03/06/2021 18:55

Don't be daft.

Do you think the streets are being policed by people looking out for terfs?!

Unless one of your holiday activities is going to a uni campus and shouting ONLY WOMEN HAVE VAGINAS then you're safe.
