Are you put off booking a holiday in Scotland by the Marion Miller case and the Scottish police carping about stickers?

I know that the chances of being harassed by the police on holiday are minimal but the whole atmosphere: law changes, the SNP attitude to women, the police tweeting about stickers etc - would you really want to holiday in such a pool of chilling effects? It is really changing how I feel about Scotland (in the sense of those currently running it - I'm not blaming the average Scot obviously) and I know if I went there it would be on my mind all the time. Chilling effects do not equal a holiday feeling is what I am saying I guess.

I live in Scotland. I'll holiday in Scotland, but then I don't have an issue with trans rights 🤷‍♀️
And for the poster that said they would discuss the Salmond trial and end up in jail like Craig Murray, Craig Murray did more than just talk about the Salmond trial. He blogged about it in a way that could potentially identify one of the complainers. seems to me that prosecuting him supports women's rights

Gingerkittykat · 03/06/2021 21:50

Are you serious? You are scared to come on holiday to Scotland?

I'm GC and don't like a lot of what has been happening regarding arrests and the hate crime bill. It does not mean we live in a dictatorship and some of these posts are verging on hysteria.

Do you really think Nicola Sturgeon is going to change her policies because someone refuses to send their kids to a Scottish uni?

IGetOver · 03/06/2021 21:59

I’m Scottish and disgusted with what is going on in Scotland. My dp is English and we are seriously considering moving down there due to the anti women sentiment. However I do worry that this is spreading rapidly and England won’t be far behind this nonsense.

FOJN · 03/06/2021 22:04

Shedbuilder

The situation is the same in many English universities too. I spoke to an academic a couple of years ago who said their union had warned members if they were accused of transphobia they were on their own, and we now how casually that accusations is flung around. She said the atmosphere of fear among academics (mostly female, no surprise there) affected their ability to properly do their job because of the need for constant vigilance about everything they said or wrote on line.

womaninatightspot · 03/06/2021 22:11

I'm Scottish and am horrified by what's going on. It's surprising how little other people seem to care as generally doesn't effect them day to day.

There's no way I'd vote for independence as at least the HoL seems to have some adults with common sense in it.

@ArabellaScott

Thanks, Screaming.

Honestly, today I was looking at the Marion Millar #Womenwontwheesht, saw the photo of a big fucking gun (presumably a replica) and the person saying they were 'making a list' and my first impulse was to call the police. I picked up the phone.

And put it right back down again. Because what would happen if I called the police, as a feminist, in Scotland, today?

Are you always this paranoid?

I've looked at the hashtag and saw the pictures you are talking about and they should be reported to someone, and probably also to the institution where this person is studying for their PHD.

Waitwhat23 · 03/06/2021 22:23

The images were reported to the person's university (Brunel) who responded very quickly with a 'trans rights are human rights' statement. Facing a horrified response from the general public that violent threats against women (in particular Scottish women, given the hashtag) were essentially being endorsed by the University they then apologised and reported the student to the Police. However, their initial response was very telling.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/06/2021 22:24

Shedbuilder this is so worrying, my dd is thinking of applying to Edinburgh.

reprehensibleme · 03/06/2021 22:25

Appalled at what's happening. DH works at
an Edinburgh University - nobody is speaking out, least of all women, in fear for their jobs. What has happened to Marion Millar beggars belief. TRAs can post death threats, abuse, yet nothing is done. Where are the SNP in all this, or the self proclaimed lifelong feminist. Nicola Sturgeon?

BreakingtheIce · 03/06/2021 22:28

I’ve just looked at a group I want to join . The criteria states ‘open to those who identify as women or are non binary’. I won’t be joining it. The world has gone crazy.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 03/06/2021 22:28

@Theunamedcat

I loved going to Scotland but I won't return now I dont feel safe as a woman going there anymore
Bit hysterical. In what way would you be genuinely actually unsafe? Confused
ArabellaScott · 03/06/2021 22:29

Paranoid? Marion Millar is facing court next month. Calling the police to out oneself as a feminist would be enormously foolhardy.

He did, but many other journalists also wrote details that made “jigsaw identification” possible and one accidentally named a complainant on Twitter. Yet the only person charged and convicted was Murray. Coincidentally Murray was the only one of those people who was pro-Salmond.
ArabellaScott · 03/06/2021 22:29

Yes, we're just a bunch of hysterical women. Plus ca change.

reprehensibleme · 03/06/2021 22:29

I bet Marion Millar thought she was safe until a couple of weeks ago.

Newstepchild · 03/06/2021 22:30

@Mojoj

What a complete and utter load of shite. Seriously? The level of ignorance in these posts about what is allegedly happening in nasty old Scotland is breathtaking😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Totally agree with this
NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 03/06/2021 22:32

Actually I’m wrong there, another man was convicted for naming complainants on Twitter. He got 6 months. Murray’s sentence for hinting is 8 months.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 03/06/2021 22:33

If that referred to my last post then yes, it is hysterical and hyperbolic.

I live in Scotland too, and have spent the day tweeting madly about Marion Millar. Even then I'm struggling to see what effect her case has on someone from England who fancies a long weekend in Edinburgh.

ArabellaScott · 03/06/2021 22:33

Shhh, don't mention Craig Murray. Or the recent resignations.

Everything is wonderful in sunny Scotland!

UmpteenthTime · 03/06/2021 22:48

Scot living in England. Always thought we’d return at some point.
No chance while SNP in power.
Ardent SNP supporters are among some of the most judgemental, narrow minded, lacking in intellectual curiosity people that I’ve ever encountered.
I find the narrative projected by the SNP that Scotland is an open, progressive, tolerant society pretty terrifying when Marion’s case along with others suggests that Scotland is increasingly the exact opposite.

The recent row at Abertay University because a student said that women have vaginas and the many Scottish Universities mentioned on here - www.gcacademianetwork.org/

It may well not affect the average woman holidaying in Scotland but its naive to say that there's not some very worrying incursions against women's rights.

Someone mentioned Nicola Sturgeon - did she ever make a public statement condemning the corrective rape threats made against Joanna Cherry by a member of the SNP?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 03/06/2021 22:59

@CroydianSlip

I always thought Scotland would be my place to run away to, but recently I've had to accept it's a place to run away from.

Am absolutely horrified and appalled by what is going on there.

Yes, the places I looked on as traditional, no-nonsense, kindly, etc (Scotland, Canada, New Zealand) are places I'd avoid these days.
Quaggars · 03/06/2021 23:01

Not put off in the slightest, I've always thought Scotland is a lovely country and that hasn't changed.
They seem inclusive too, so even more so like now.

ArabellaScott · 03/06/2021 23:02

Someone mentioned Nicola Sturgeon - did she ever make a public statement condemning the corrective rape threats made against Joanna Cherry by a member of the SNP?

No. Nothing.

reprehensibleme · 03/06/2021 23:04

Scotland is becoming the very antithesis of inclusive.
