She's such a hateful bigot, isn't she?

JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.
@ProudExclu She aligned herself with Maya Forstater. She is not "a woman like you". She is coming from a very different place. There is nothing transphobic about supporting victims of abuse, but that's not all JKR has done.

I am sorry for your experiences. In the kindest possible way, I'm not going to engage with you further because you have been through the most terrible trauma and I have absolutely no desire to exacerbate that.
Good for her, aligning herself with Maya, who also has said or done nothing transphobic.

BlueLobelia · 17/05/2021 14:44

@ChloeCrocodile

What is it with the JKR worship around here?

Women supporting a woman who stands up for women's rights! On a feminism board no less! I'm shocked and scandalised! Grin

Bloody love JKR.

JKR if you are on here then you are fabulous, and your stance on Trans issues is fabulous. (And you made my ASD reading-refuser son adore HP and as an extension adore reading... so you are flipping great in many ways. :) )

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 17/05/2021 14:44

So we've had Hitler & now Jimmy Saville. I hope you know any neutral observers reading this will know that it is beyond risible to compare JK Rowling to those two. It's so patently clear that she isn't a genocidal psychopath with a desire to conquer the world, nor is she a serial abuser of children, I know you think shrieking bigot and making these comparisons will make most people run a mile from the issue and not speak out, but it really is wearing thin. It simply highlights the paucity of your argument. The curtain has been pulled back...

The story behind the 'Hitler was a vegetarian' myth if anyone's interested.

@peachgreen

People contain multitudes and can do both good and bad things. Groundbreaking, I know.

I don't agree with JKR's stance on trans rights and I strongly dislike the fact that she has used her platform in ways that have legitimised transphobia, but I will be forever grateful to her for the huge amount of money she has pumped into MS research, including funding a groundbreaking experimental treatment which my mum benefitted from. The two things can coexist. Like most of us, she is neither a saint nor a devil.

Would you show me what she's said that's transphobic, Peachgreen? I can't seem to find it.

Was going to say something like that also. Drives my vegetarian husband bonkers.

Hang on Ted. We are still waiting to hear back whether The President of the United States is more powerful than Joanne Rowling. I asked it up thread, let's give it some time shall we for that decision to come through.....

There may be some doubts?

Oh, I thought you meant Trudeau there.

To name another powerful public figure who is so unequivocal in his pro-trans stance he's wiping out women's rights to safety, privacy, sports, etc altogether.

The tactics are having the opposite effect to those intended, people are seeing the ridiculousness of the TRA lack of argument and their appalling behaviour and know that is not the side they want to be on or associated with.
Guavafish · 17/05/2021 14:59

Well done JKR for helping save lives!

Yes. The more shit like this gets spouted the more I feel I cannot stay silent because it is so so wrong.

This tactic of trying to shame good women into silence by comparing us to the worst of humanity is backfiring. It's making us stand up and say "enough, that parallel is ridiculous and the fact you made it shows just how little you understand of why women are pushing back"

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 17/05/2021 15:01

@BlueLobelia exactly. It's not like there's a dearth of vegetarian/vegan nuts I'd rather not be associated with (Gillian McKeith for example!)
But Hitler wasn't a vegetarian for sure.
Not sure if he actually had one ball though...

OldLang · 17/05/2021 15:04

Imagine even mentioning that monster Saville when it was the TRAs bombarding JKR's Twitter with violent pornography as a response to the Ickabog campaign that children were very likely to see. Despicable.

It really is wearing thin. People can see this for what it is, and it's not working anymore.

Incredible, isn't it, and when we mention safeguarding we are slated to be burnt at the stake.
BlackeyedSusan · 17/05/2021 15:14

personally I think she's a bit of a witch, rather than an overlord, but which one? Minerva possibly; tough as old boots and stands up for what is right in the face of opposition, and does not put up with nonsense from the young 'uns. Wink

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 17/05/2021 15:23

I thought that comparing Rowling to Hitler was pretty funny but comparing her to Jimmy Saville might be even funnier in its lunacy.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/05/2021 15:25

Good thread.
And yes, well "ratio'd".
JKRowling is an amazing woman who has used her wealth for good - and there are still brainwashed cultists and their supporters out there baying for her blood.
Saddos.

Ah, oops! Another one on the ever growing and ever extensive list which must be eclipsing War and Peace for it's length, it would take considerably less time to say what isn't a transphobic dog whistle than what is.
TedImgoingmad · 17/05/2021 15:36

ClawedButler · 17/05/2021 15:37

Yep. "Be who you are and express yourself however you want, you are perfect just as you are" apparently means, "I hate transpeople so much I want them to LITERALLY DIE"

junipertree2 · 17/05/2021 15:40

@NotBadConsidering

“Emboldened transphobes” is TRA speak for given women and allies the courage to speak out for women’s rights. Given “transphobe” is such a vague term which includes people who don’t want convicted sex offenders housed in women’s prisons, don’t want males in women’s sport, and are concerned about children making life-changing decisions that will medicalise their bodies for the rest of their lives at an age they can’t consent, I am eternally grateful for JK Rowling giving people the strength to stand up for these concerns.
👏👏👏

Whatstheweatherlike · 17/05/2021 15:42

Wading through lockdown last year was so hard for so many people. Watching the story of the Ickabog unfold on Twitter and reading the reams of detailed comments JKR made about the children's artwork was honestly one of the brightest things for me during that time. To watch her spend hours in such a thoughtful way and then donate all the profits to Covid charities, yes that takes a certain character. To see that as comparable to Jimmy Saville, well what can I say Gottalife. If that's your strongest argument, I have to tell you it's piss poor.
