JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.

So we've decided that money donated to transpeople is more important than money donated to combat coronavirus in developing populations?

Right. I'll bear that in mind. What else are transpeople more important than? So far on the list is women, coronavirus... anything else?

Everything.
Carriemac · 17/05/2021 13:20

She is truly a great female role model, clever , kind, talented and principled .

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/05/2021 13:23

Good for her giving her own money. Hope other rich people put their money where their mouths are.

(I can't decide which is the craziest TRA thing I've read this week is... The comparison on pg1 or the blog post about children being transphobic for thinking a boy who likes princesses is still a boy...)

Helleofabore · 17/05/2021 13:25

Apparently she should have kept her mouth shut, but presumably famous people with a different opinion can say whatever they like, and aren't responsible for the harassment and abuse coming from TRAs. Funny old world.

Yes. So it seems.

Erikrie · 17/05/2021 13:28

persistentwoman thanks for the charity link. I think I will donate. In multiples of £5. I wonder what else I could buy for £5. I'm sure there was something recently. 🤔
I prefer to donate money to worthy causes though.

A while ago I did a "vision board" of women who have power and are inspirational to me.

I'm extra proud of her status on my board now Grin

Whatever you think about the trans subject, here is a woman who uses her power to stand up for what she believes to be truth and justice.

I hope one day that her infamous twitter speech will be considered to be the normal, non-hateful based in reality post that I read it to be from day one.

Erikrie · 17/05/2021 13:32

This male trans ally said: '...if women are allowed to question trans identity' then it opens the floodgates to all hate speech.

Note, women, not people

Wow. What an absolute prick. He is part of the problem. Not the solution.

andyoldlabour · 17/05/2021 13:36

What a lovely thing for JK to do, well done!

StandWithYou · 17/05/2021 13:44

I think that JKR has made relatively few comments on this. Emma Watson and Daniel Ratcliffe have probably tweeted a similar number of times. The issue is in how they were received and the impact they had. The response to JKR was immense, we’ve all seen the porn posted on her Twitter feed when she was supporting children through lockdown by commenting on their Ickabod drawings. It is, and was, the immense response that she had, that created the impression that she has commented more than she actually has. Plus the fact she is a better writer and has a coherent position that has created a larger impact. It brought it to a much larger audience due to the suck my lady dick etc that meant it hit the newspapers.

Her comments also show that there is a conflict between women’s and trans rights - no wonder they want to shut her down and disparage her. Shameful.

However the action of Godwin’s Law in real life has been very entertaining.

Go JKR my overlord and master.

Stealing this.

Quite. Tosser.

I think the point is that a very rich person making millions for charities is not really a reliable indication of good character. Remember that cigar smoking disc jockey?

LigPatin · 17/05/2021 13:59

Oh Lordy,
I got into a fight with some random on FB the other week who was slagging her off for donating to charity.
I cannot believe that people twist charitable giving like this. The poor woman can't win.
NB: Do not engage randoms on FB in arguments, it was like trying to play chess with a pigeon.

Hmmm not a bad effort but unfortunately the bar was set so high with Hitler I'm not sure any more spurious comparions can reach it. Sorry.

Maybe you should get a life and stop scraping the barrel.

In any event, he was not giving away his own money, he was raising sponsorship. That is not the same as giving away your earnings.

Cancer patients. Remember the person who called it horribly unfair that breast cancer patients could get mastectomies while they had to wait for their gender confirming top surgery.

The person you reference was a well known miser, the phrase tighter than a duck's arse has him as an example, he got sponsorship he NEVER donated his own money.

Perhaps you too could educate yourself like another poster on here before you make ludicrously false statements.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/05/2021 14:20

Imagine comparing JKR to Hitler and possibly the UK's most prolific paedophile. What a fucking disgrace, how insulting to so many people.

GrolliffetheDragon · 17/05/2021 14:22

I'm a little bit in love with JKR, I think she's pretty amazing. Not a huge Harry Potter fan or anything, just she seems like such a decent person, and was willing to say and stand by what she believed despite knowing what would happen. I admire that greatly.

And the giving so much of her own money to charity is awesome as well.

That's quite a reach isn't it. Embarrassed for you.

Waitwhat23 · 17/05/2021 14:24

I suspect I'm far from the only person who was a trans ally and whose viewpoint was changed due to JK Rowling's essay. Not because she 'embolded transphobes' but because of my disgust at the reaction her essay got. I had heard the controversy, thought 'that's a shame, I liked her' and read the essay to get the context. I read it and thought, that seems balanced and fair and it's very brave of her to talk about her own distressing experiences.

And then I saw the backlash, the rape and death threats, the admissions that many saw her as a transphobe having not actually read her essay. And that was it for me, my eyes were opened.

In my view, she's an incredibly brave woman. She could have stayed out of all this and avoided the incredible amount of hate that came her way. She didn't. And she continues to pour enormous amounts of money into good causes.

People sneer at the 'fan club' on here. I'm proud to be part of that fan club.

JKR has never said anything that indicates she has anything other than a "good character".

Defending the rights of women and being concerned about the medicalisation of children isn't "bad" OR "bigoted".

It's common decency and common sense.
