So are we really not allowed to talk about Eddie at all?

My interest in Eddie Izzard is limited, but I have found it interesting how many threads about him have been zapped. Is there a reason for this?

Is this the MN version of Aimeeeeee Chancellor at Reddit? Does Eddie have some kind of sway around here?

I've not been keeping up...are we any closer to establishing exactly what it is we can't say about EI? DMs welcome if you don't want to risk deletion yourself Smile

ValancyRedfern · 26/03/2021 16:59

@Floisme

Frankly I'm bored already with Eddie and I suspect the electorate soon will be too. But then I watch the threads disappear and I come on here and see all the deletions and I wonder why the discussion seems to make some people so uncomfortable. And so here I am.
Same. It's a real Streisand Effect. I'm not that interested in EI but I am very interested in why we can't talk about EI.

I was interested to hear Steve Wright introduce EI on the radio this afternoon. The intro had clearly been carefully written to avoid using any personal pronouns. Also I read a review in the Guardian of the film EI is in. Also not a single pronoun. Journalists are being very careful.

If I saw that sort of thing happening around me, people walking on eggshells to not upset me, I'd be mortified.

Guess I don't have the right sort of personality profile to go in for this stuff.

Thanks @tool8tofix8

YY to Valency and the Streisand Effect.

@NecessaryScene1 - I agree. It's reassuring that we are not that type of personality profile.

Can I just take this opportunity to say I'm so glad I've used this lockdown to get myself educated on this stuff. Still more to learn but it's been a real eye opener. Thank you to the long standing members on this board.

PotholeHellhole · 26/03/2021 20:28

Has Eddie always been as high profile as this? I feel like I'm constantly seeing news on the comedian.

Am I just noticing now because a couple of news items really annoyed me?

NancyDrawed · 26/03/2021 20:30

I was surprised by how quickly the name appeared on an AIBU thread about things that are currently overdone but will looked back on differently.

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 26/03/2021 20:36

Eddie pops back and forth between girl and boy mode so how would you know what pronouns to use at any time anyway?

PotholeHellhole · 26/03/2021 20:41

Eddie's pronouns are in flux.

BraveBananaBadge · 26/03/2021 20:44

Is it to avoid upsetting Eddie per se, Necessary, or more to avoid the arse ache of a pile on from the 'literal violence' brigade and the wider implications of that?

Up until recently Eddie said either pronoun was fine. Then that huge Guardian feature read like a full on 'coming out' as a woman, going so far as to hint they might be taking hormones and considering surgery in future. Followed by two high profile 'boy roles' - so everyone's confused all over again.

Now the media largely don't seem to be taking any chances and going out of their way to avoid pronouns altogether (like most on here as well really), a daft thing just keeps getting dafter. I like Eddie and have really struggled with this. Every single bit of press Eddie does just seems to muddy the waters more, whether that's Eddie's fault or that of the interviewer and whether or not they really understand what they're dealing with.

I don't understand how Eddie can be in girl or boy mode at Eddie's age? Wouldn't it be man or woman mode?

en0la · 28/03/2021 05:14

@LunaNorth

He should go for a smear test if he wants an adventure.

I bet that would send him back into boy mode quick sharp.

But that's a boring dahling 🙄
YouSetTheTone · 28/03/2021 08:39

I’ve got myself confused again. Isn’t your ‘innate gender identity’ something that you can’t control? (Hence many children and adolescents being put on drug regimes and operated on to ‘correct’ their bodies to match what is inside).
But... EI... switches modes and controls EI’s identity?

Or am I wrong and gender identity has never been seen as something innate and immutable? Genuinely confused about the narrative presented.

Doyoumind · 28/03/2021 09:03

Don't bother looking for clarity YouSet. It doesn't exist.

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 28/03/2021 09:03

Its like SWMNBN all over again.

Floisme · 28/03/2021 09:09

More deletions I see. What's going to happen when Eddie stands for office? When Eddie becomes a public servant? When Eddie is paid by the public purse? Will MN have to recruit an entire team of specialist Eddie monitors?

drspouse · 28/03/2021 09:15

@ListeningQuietly

Did Eddie Izzard get a girl fee or a boy fee for their most recent film?
Boy, natch.
Floisme · 28/03/2021 09:23

Apologies MN - I meant to say 'Eddie moderators' which has an entirely different meaning Blush

backinthebox · 28/03/2021 10:44

Endurance is done in ‘girl mode?’ I’m not sure EI would have ever had the same experience as my DD already has had, at the age of 13, when I had to coax her round a 25km event last year (during the brief window competitive sport was allowed) whilst on her period. Her girl’s sports attire made it a particularly difficult thing to deal with, and at the end of the event we had a long talk about what sanitary products and practices would be helpful in future given that she can’t avoid competing whilst on her period. She hopes to be out competing in the 35km sections this year, and will be in girl mode for all of it, because she is a girl.

I find it difficult to understand how a 59 year old ‘penis haver/testosterone producer’ or however it is acceptable to describe such a person can be in a ‘girl mode.’ Surely, even if there were some confusion on gender identity, it would be ‘woman mode?’ And once again, when I look at the women (by that I mean adult human female) athletes I admire, they are always describing how they have succeeded as an athlete whilst dealing with childbirth, breastfeeding, caring responsibilities, endometriosis, etc. I’m not sure EI has had any of the same experiences as a biologically female athlete. I admire EI’s achievements in marathon running very much, and am rather saddened that EI has made his impressive sporting record a bit of a joke by bringing the whole topic of gender identification into it when the fact is anyone who can run that number of consecutive marathons does not need to make it even more special.

It’s actually hugely insulting to women to suggest that you do acting (earning your money) and politics (when you want to be taken seriously) in ‘boy mode’ but activism (idealism) and running (essentially a hobby) in ‘girl mode.’ It’s even more insulting when women say “hang on, you can’t flip between the two depending on which mode suits the situation better” and are told to shut up.

Chersfrozenface · 28/03/2021 11:14

I appear to be terribly out of touch. Is situational gender a thing now?

Alex2112 · 28/03/2021 11:27

As with any human adult Eddie is free to ID and he wishes,
He is free to dress as he wishes.
How ever he should accept that he is a biological male. Biological sex change is impossible.
He should not be undermining women's rights, we should recall he used female private spaces, dressed as a female, (Transvestite, which he freely admits he was) - he scared two young women.

Now he wants to be the first female labour PM? IF he did become PM, he would not be a female PM.

We must respect biology, women's rights to female private spaces and common sense.

He even wants to be accepted as female and male, depending on what the topic is.

When making his money as actor, he wants to be in "boy mode" ?

we are free to discuss this. His actions are leading to many issues that does nothing for society's respect for women's rights

He has no understanding of women's reality, their health issues, he is playing a game for his own selfish issues.
