Julie Bindel has shared on Twitter that Reddit is banning any mention or sharing of her Spectator article & banning users for discussion Aimee Challenor/Knight as well.

Here’s the spec article

While this thread remains up, if you want an insight into what goes on on Reddit, the #superstraight viral happening is instructive. Particular Reddit threads were targeted with certain material (which I can't specify here) and the presence of this material was then used by Admins opposed to those threads as a justification for them to be removed.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 23/03/2021 22:14

First the superstraights & now this. I’d have thought Reddit users would be heading for WTF mode fast.

ArabellaScott · 23/03/2021 22:33

LemonSwan, that is horrendous, I'm so sorry.

Really baffling, to me, that we get so many visitors at FWR to berate us on how awful, bigoted and mean we are - yet there's the whooooole rest of the internet with forums and discussions taking place that are - well, another level, to say the least.

It's like Che Guevara gatecrashing the WI, and shitting on the scones for being bourgeois, while knowing fine well that elsewhere Batista is merrily setting up the firing squads.

PandorasMailbox · 23/03/2021 22:36

@LemonSwan

Reddit has been sinister for a long time. I had an incident a while back where I was discussing womens rights and had serious issues as a result. Perma-banned, facebook hacked, email hacked, banking attacked, you name it - even my phone was hacked and loaded with altered fbook pictures of my friends covered in meme blood with threats written on it. It was likely an admin as it happened simultaneously with the permaban.

I had to scrap every phone, every machine, change internet provider and have my house rewired to the box, and obviously start all over again on the net. Police reports. The works.

It was pretty serious and now I am very careful where I discuss women's rights or those who might oppose it.

I've had something similar recently, including sock accounts created to intimidate me.

These people are sick, evil bastards. It's frightening that they seem to have so much power and influence.

LemonSwan · 23/03/2021 22:39

What did the police say/do?
They couldnt really do much. When someones that advanced at tech they werent going to find them. They were glad I reported because if it escalated further then they would have a history. Thankfully it never did and was just virtual/ online and never translated into my physical life as money stolen or turning up at my house. It did have an indirect effect on my physical life at the time though and the stress did cause me to leave my job and cause a really bad period of mental health.

I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy but weirdly I am glad it happened. I wouldnt be where I am today without it. In a way it was a bit like COVID where I was forced to step out of life temporarily and rebuild it for the better in the exact way I wanted. All my closest friends who know me say I am the luckiest out of everyone they know and ironically the only person I have to thank for that was my hacker. So its a happy ending :)

LemonSwan · 23/03/2021 22:42

pandoras
I am so sorry [flower]

The only thing I would recommend is just starting again with your accounts or making temporary ones and leaving them dormant for a long time. If they have accessed any devices then please seek professional help to see if its resolvable or not.

PandorasMailbox · 23/03/2021 22:48

My devices are okay so far but I had to change passwords and notify my bank as they'd hacked an account and were ordering things using my card. My email was accessed and they spammed me with thousands of subscriptions.

They really are sick individuals aren't they?

That is so frightening! The thought that someone can hack a bank card from knowing someone's Reddit account is pretty terrifying Shock, and that they were threatening your friends and family too, for talking about women's rights?! Reddit is scary!

Flowers Pandora'sbox

LemonSwan · 23/03/2021 23:07

They are sick.

So sorry!

I would close that email tbh.

It is an awful thing to go through. Very high stress. You will get through the other side Flowers

'Particular Reddit threads were targeted with certain material (which I can't specify here) '

I'm guessing illegal obscene images.

Just reminded me. What is it with men being so prone to this sort of thing?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15333600

www.rt.com/news/485443-zoom-porn-singapore-teachers/

www.thesun.co.uk/news/14083332/estate-agent-ad-board-porn-prank/

And on and on.

It's always blokes.

Why do they behave like this? I get it being exciting to be able to hack something but why is it porn?

And related. Why do they draw their cocks over everything?

I suppose it's similar to flashing? To cause upset, shock etc

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 23/03/2021 23:16

Power.

eurochick · 23/03/2021 23:34

This is so sinister. This is all stuff that is already all over the mainstream media. What legitimate reason can there be for deletion (none). So what is the non-legitimate motivation (this is the question that Reddit should be asking but isn't).

NiceGerbil · 23/03/2021 23:49

Thing is that more and more people are noticing.

This behaviour, seen over and over again, is so obvious. And counter productive. I don't understand why a. They think that this sort of thing is a kind of obvious thing to do and b. Not realising it draws attention and gets questions asked.

I don't get it at all.

unwashedanddazed · 24/03/2021 00:09

www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/mbbm2c/welcome_back_subreddit_statement/

The mods have carefully not named the admin in question and warned of the consequences of doing so. They have, however, headed the thread with a huge photo of the unnameable one. Grin

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 24/03/2021 00:14

"It later became apparent that Reddit has hired this individual as an Reddit admin, and were banning people from discussing her past to protect their employee from harassment."

Says it all really

miri1985 · 24/03/2021 00:23

Holy Streisand effect! In response to the censorship a load of subreddits have gone offline in solidarity and are linking back to this thread

This is the list of subreddits that have gone offline because of this, all are linked back to that blank-cheque post

How does this person get all these opportunities?

It's very odd.

MingeofDeath · 24/03/2021 00:34

This has blown up massively on other Reddit subs. Sunlight people sunlight!

miri1985 · 24/03/2021 00:39

Some of the subs that linked to it are huge. I will be shocked if a mainstream UK/US outlet doesn't pick up the story now

PotholeHellhole · 24/03/2021 01:06

I didn't realise how influential they had been.

They organised the group letter against Get the L Out. www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/07/13/more-than-2000-lgbt-people-sign-letter-calling-for-change-at-pride-in-london-over-anti-trans-protest/

MingeofDeath · 24/03/2021 01:14

@ NiceGerbil

I was thinking exactly the same thing

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 24/03/2021 01:23

I just don't understand.

AC appears to have had some very challenging circumstances in their youth. And, no particular qualifications or skills particular to the communications industry. So, why would a huge platform like reddit want to jump in to protect one individual?

BlackeyedSusan · 24/03/2021 01:24

Someone really does not want to be remembered and linked to their past.
