Fucking hell.

SuddenArborealStop · 23/03/2021 19:53

DH just said to me did you see the drama on reddit- one of the first times I'm ahead of him and more knowledgeable on the back story.. its being noticed wider than the usual audience anyway

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 23/03/2021 19:53

This is mental. People will be searching now, whereas they probably wouldn’t have paid much attention before. Definitely the Streisand effect

ErrolTheDragon · 23/03/2021 19:57

I wonder if the mainstream media will pick up on it at all?

NecessaryScene1 · 23/03/2021 19:59

I wonder if the mainstream media will pick up on it at all?

I think it's quite likely. "Major social media platform autobans any user linking to Spectator article by prominent writer to protect staff member" is news.

And journalists do like writing about journalism.

PotholeHellhole · 23/03/2021 19:59

I'm grimly fascinated by the lack of nous. There are three words in that original article that refer to that admin member, and it's a hyperlink. Amongst many hyperlinks.

Three.

Let's be honest, in the age of the internet, where people make long posts on the basis of a headline without ever reading the article itself, no-one would have clicked that link.

MaudTheInvincible · 23/03/2021 20:01

@StocksAndScares

The person in question is a paid administrator. They have far more power than a mod.

Yes. The mods have had to delete all the comments to protect the users from the paid administrator! I mean, talk about Streisand Effect!! I've never used so many exclamation marks and I find my eyebrows are stuck too Shock 😲

happydappy2 · 23/03/2021 20:12

Think I read somewhere that the Challenors developed terf blocker for Twitter....and I am very concerned about their input to the advice to Girl Guides... join up the dots & it doesn’t look good

WarOnWomen · 23/03/2021 20:15

How can people who post on a subreddit about politics and who are effectively gagged continue to want to stay on Reddit?

BoKatan · 23/03/2021 20:17

There was a thread about this on Mumsnet this morning that was deleted as being "not in the spirit". Wonder if this one will go.

happydappy2 · 23/03/2021 20:21

It is of importance though if Julie Bindells article is being censored.....

boatyardblues · 23/03/2021 20:24

Posting for the deletion message 😄

NiceGerbil · 23/03/2021 20:27

How did that person walk into that job?

NiceGerbil · 23/03/2021 20:29

Good lord.

I just googled the name and Reddit role.

No info available but scrolling down were a lot of links where people on forums had mentioned it.

Fucking hell the language! Transphobia. Really awful stuff.

But we're the worst of the worst?

That was an enlightening Google.

cheeseismydownfall · 23/03/2021 20:31

The modern “public square” is social media and online discussion forums - none of which are actually public, they’re owned and controlled by private individuals and corporations, and most of which seem to be beyond a lot of jurisdiction. We rely on the benevolence of whoever is running these sites for free some of speech and association in many ways. When they choose to discriminate against a particular group - how do you combat that?

Excellent point.

WarOnWomen · 23/03/2021 20:32

@NiceGerbil

How did that person walk into that job?
The person was already a moderator on Reddit before becoming administrator and allegedly gloated about getting rid of r/gendercritical.
NiceGerbil · 23/03/2021 20:32

Twitter Reddit Facebook are all privately owned.

As such they can and obviously do decide which people and views should be heard and which not.

That is very not good.

MN has no edit or delete posts facilitity.. you can't block people. Anyone can post and they have to stand by their words.

No wonder it's hated by various groups.

LemonSwan · 23/03/2021 20:33

Reddit has been sinister for a long time. I had an incident a while back where I was discussing womens rights and had serious issues as a result. Perma-banned, facebook hacked, email hacked, banking attacked, you name it - even my phone was hacked and loaded with altered fbook pictures of my friends covered in meme blood with threats written on it. It was likely an admin as it happened simultaneously with the permaban.

I had to scrap every phone, every machine, change internet provider and have my house rewired to the box, and obviously start all over again on the net. Police reports. The works.

It was pretty serious and now I am very careful where I discuss women's rights or those who might oppose it.

NiceGerbil · 23/03/2021 20:33

Sorry last post made the same point as someone else a bit before!

PotholeHellhole · 23/03/2021 20:47

Shock Flowers

I had a reddit account for a bit but I stopped using it after I found out what subs were allowed. Absolutely horrific.

Bloody hell, Swan. Terrifying and super stressful.

Cwenthryth · 23/03/2021 21:17

What is the answer to private companies/individuals having control over what can be discussed in the public square?

Newspapers are all privately owned, but we get a plurality of views expressed in the media, just. In fact it’s the public broadcaster I find is the most straightjacketed, having to stay impartial and captured by a large lobbying organisation masquerading as a charity

How do we regulate the online space? Can it be done? Should it?

Posting a news article from a major publication containing a brief mention of news that is widely available across all major UK outlets is now doxxing then? Words really do mean whatever they want them to don't they Hmm.

Regarding the individual concerned, while I feel desperately for them as a child they are an adult now and responsible for their own actions. At the very best interpretation they have zero concept of safeguarding or appropriate behaviour and should not be anywhere near a position of power in a site with vulnerable teens. It really is absolutely mind boggling.

But it has cast a great deal of much needed sunlight. Lots of mentions of women's subs being banned and suggestions that this is is all due to transphobia being heavily down voted.
