A female academic has posed this question

Please explain to me how a fully transitioned trans woman, who has breasts and a vagina, has orgasms and experiences the sex act in the same way my body does, should be forced to put male, not female, on the census, just because that is on her birth certificate.

Jane Clare Jones has already been on the case, but I thought we might also enjoy taking that apart.

How odd. I thought being a woman was nothing to do with anatomy? 🤔

They do move the goalposts rather often.

Jaxhog · 10/03/2021 15:31

But if people don't declare their 'sex' honestly, we're going to have increased cases of 'women' with prostate problems and 'men' having dysmenorrhea. Quite apart from the issues of sport and safe spaces, we will no longer have accurate figures to base sex-differentiated medical research on - just at the time we've finally realized its importance.

At least the 'self-identification debacle has gone.

Bit transphobic, I thought.

Is she saying that someone isn't a woman just because they say they are, then?

Someone on twitter is being a wally. Cue twitter shouting match, and everyone blocking each other.

I quoted it over here because I thought we'd have fun with arguing over the implications, too. We need a laugh.

Well, this poor academic may not have a great sex life if she thinks that orgasms come from her vagina, as opposed to her clitoris.

Neovaginas are one thing, but I didn't think SRS involved artificially constructing the amazingly complex physiology of the clitoris. Or does it?

Highwind · 10/03/2021 15:52

I define female as a human with the absence of a Y chromosome.

"In terms of vagina’s getting wet and having an orgasm - I never stated penetration. You immediately assumed male/female sex acts which says an awful lot about your own issues on this. And that’s gross. You’re just denying another human being’s bodily autonomy. Why?"

nauticant · 10/03/2021 15:56

When you're on twitter talking about your wet pussy and you're not a popstar, a pornstar, or a cat owner, it's time to close it down and step away.

bourbonne · 10/03/2021 16:00

"The sex act", with no other context, is normally taken to mean good old PIV, isn't it? It's quite a biological term.

Especially when she's painted such a picture of the hypothetical "vagina" enjoying said sex act.

AbsintheFriends · 10/03/2021 16:01

Poor command of apostrophe usage. Which, having read one of her books, does not surprise me in the least.

Biologically not XX despite all the adaptations to the original body.

An aside - How does this person know that their orgasm is the exact same as a female orgasm?

PotholeParadies · 10/03/2021 16:07

I don't think she's as woke as she thinks. If she was, she'd have neatly avoided being heterocentric in the first place and wouldn't be reduced to saying "no U" now.

So, there IS a self-lubrication process for Neo-vaginas? How is this achieved? Maybe, I am getting all my information from the wrong place.

@Eteri

I have a trans daughter, and have seen a couple of neovagina's in my time belonging to her friends (all consenting adults in completely platonic circumstances, get your mind out of the gutter), and I'm 99% sure they don't have orgasms like a biological female. In fact, my understand of them (and the reason my dd doesn't want one) is that they require a lot of hard work and maintance to remain 'functional'.

Genuinely interested as I don't know about this- what do they need to do to keep them "functional"?

I also wonder- surgically created "vaginas" don't go anywhere do they? What I mean is, what do they lead to? Not a cervix and no uterus further up...

Many questions...

But to respond to the OP's point, I think it's disgusting that someone is trying to frame womanhood in terms of men's ability to fuck us. Can you give a link to the twitter thread? I'd like to see some of the responses.

FlamedToACrisp · 10/03/2021 16:14

Please explain to me how a fully transitioned trans woman... should be forced to put male, not female, on the census, just because that is on her birth certificate.

How about: because the question is asking what sex you were registered at birth, not what sex do you think you are?

At least the 'self-identification debacle has gone.

More to the point, if the current figures show that men are twice as likely to have (e.g.) heart disease than women are, and we suddenly see a huge rise in women with heart disease, we need to know if there's a women-with-heart-disease problem to be addressed, or just a change in labelling. And also, we can't deduce from the figures if there's a heart-disease-in-men-who've-had-female-hormones problem.
notyourhandmaid · 10/03/2021 16:23

@Eteri

Oh, gosh, it really shouldn't be a 'game of luck'. I'm glad that there's one of the friends that has a satisfactory result. I can understand how it can be important to 'look female' even if the internal configurations are different, and how when done well might resolve dysphoria. The fact that it can go so horribly wrong is so upsetting.

Re: Shon Faye - oh, FFS.

"My womanhood can’t be taken away by a fundamentalist movement - all trans people will fill out our sex as we see it."

That is literally saying, we will tell lies and claim it's OK to do so.

And in order to think it doesn't matter, one needs to be of the male sex - the type of body that is the default in medicine.

Counting male bodies as female is both a lie and dangerous. Accurate data matters.

terryleather · 10/03/2021 16:32

Pointing out that males having bottom surgery doesn't give them actual female anatomy is not "denying another human being’s bodily autonomy" - that would only be happening if the person was being denied the surgery in the first place, ffs.

But then this isn't about anything other than signaling to your righteous tribe that you're righteous too. Absolute state of it.

Iwishihadariver · 10/03/2021 16:33

Nooooo! I got so absorbed in this thread my DHs bread pudding has burnt in the oven. (No euphemisms used here btw).
