The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a4164702-Bunbury-s-Eighth-Sealion-training-for-beginners?msgid=105201850#105201850

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

This thread will be taking a leisurely stroll through the foothills of community disruption, noting the behaviour of wildlife and interesting flora and fauna en route.

@ArabellaScott

Okay, for woman-friendly alternatives - is the consensus Ovarit or Spinster best? I'm on the latter but havne't got to grips with it at all.
Ovarit is like Reddit and Spinster is like Twitter. So for discussions I'd say Ovarit is better.
ArabellaScott · 07/03/2021 15:30

Thanks, that's what I needed to know! How do I get an invite, does anyone have one? I will offer virtual pickles, cake or booze as required!

I'm not going from here, Errol, but I don't want to vanish without trace, either!

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2021 15:39

I'm on, though mostly passively, a local WhatsApp group which includes some MNers .

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/03/2021 15:48

I second ArabellaScott's question; I'd like to have an alternative refuge when I get banned -- it's inevitable that I will eventually, I always do because I can't help asking questions.

PotholeParadies · 07/03/2021 16:22

Apropos of nothing at all, if you buy carrots for an accomplished barrister, you can leave comments there.

DeaconBoo · 07/03/2021 16:31

I Spin but not very regularly. Haven't tried the other one.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/03/2021 16:36

Um, thank you very much, @WoolOfBat

I can only see the first few words of your message and don't seem to be able to reply to it direct, but I'm not on Twitter so I can't ask anyone there anything.

(Hopeless case, me.)

ArabellaScott · 07/03/2021 17:23

Thanks wummens for the secret handshake, will daunder over to ovarit.

ooo that's helpful re Ovarit. I'm on Spinster (haven't been banned from Twitter, but just in case, you know). Must work out how to get an Ovarit invitation - I think I can make contact via Twitter.

It's tough - I've hung around MN (and before that the BC Woman's Hour MB) for more years than I care to count, but still sometimes get baffled by the goings on here.... I NC every 3 months or so, so maybe I just don't get into the PMs and so on to have it all explained to me! I realise with NC, it can be a bit odd as one doesn't become a recognisable 'name' ...

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 07/03/2021 17:41

Yes. It can be a bit odd, a couple of times I've name-checked a poster for being insightful on something a couple of years ago and I've had a PM from a name-changer to say, "That's me - I was [X] and I've NC'd".

MeltsAway · 07/03/2021 17:58

Well, I suppose I always feel a bit guilty for being here when I should be working, or reading a book, or doing housework or something ... so I don't really join in with the socialising or make friends off-board or exchange PMS to try to have the allusions explained to me! (not complaining about this BTW). But it's lovely to read the camaraderie in these threads.

Ovarit are on Spinster. You can get a code there if you prefer it to Twitter.
PotholeParadies · 07/03/2021 18:08

I don"t think anyone should feel guilty about messing around on MN, Melts. Even virtually, a female-dominated environment is so refreshing.

Name changer here too. Bit like you Melts - and also need to take a break every now and again for MH. Very saddened by Cara's ban. One of the many super intelligent; eloquent and wise women on FWR ThanksThanksThanks

Cailleach1 · 07/03/2021 19:10

Is it advised to name change? I imagine there are people out there who don't just accept someone disagrees with their view, they don't want people with other views to even be allowed to discuss things.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 07/03/2021 19:14

Name changer here too.

Likewise.

Is it advised to name change?

It depends on your circumstances. MN always knows who you are as it's just a name change - but when things start being unpredictable to the point of well-established posters disappearing as if they're in Avengers - Endgame then it can feel like a wise precaution.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2021 19:18

I've had this name for years and like it. I'm probably tempting fate, but I don't think I've had a deletion since a febrile thread on which I got one for a pair of dictionary definitions proving something about someone, and another for misgendering.... only the 'he' I was referring to was Donald Trump, who'd just been elected.
As I'm not intending to change my manner of posting, I'm not planning on changing my name any time soon either.

nauticant · 07/03/2021 20:12

I like my name. I'm currently on a strike for something innocuous but usually manage to steer clear of them.

I am though obsessive about not posting any information that can be used in a mosaic to determine my real world identity so am fortunate in not needing to mess around with name changing.

highame · 07/03/2021 20:18

This is where I'm staying. I get frustrated but I also acknowledge that we're in the middle of a war on women. This board, for all its faults has a huge array of women from different backgrounds, that's what makes this board so important. Knowledgeable women with a good command of the arguments are needed in order that lurkers and newbies get the good stuff and get to recognise those who want an end to this board and the arguments they use.

Not sure I.m wording this well. There's a free speech case up next week, maybe if the case is won MN will be able to base their penalties on civil debate, instead of what TRA's push for. MN shouldn't be dragged into law suits etc. that's the worst for everyone, very cautious is the best way forward for now.

Things are bound to hot up, because we're pushing back

Sad Cara has gone, she really knew her stuff

Bordois · 07/03/2021 20:18

I name change quite regularly anyway. I've been on fwr a while but I'm nowhere near as clever as some of the other women on here so I lurk more than I post (although sometimes the stupid just rankles!)

Oh no! Not Cara :( that's shit.

ArabellaScott · 07/03/2021 20:48

Went and had a look at Ovarit. I think I had a picture of some sunlit uplands where all the banned MNers are frolicking in the fields of clover. Sad

I'm sure it's fine, but it's not the MN afterlife, after all. Sad

It does have a US slant right now because most are reddit refugees but there are quite a few UK women and current/ex MNetters. It's been brought up a few times about having a UK circle so women can find each other, especially those banned from other platforms. If enough women join to make that of interest I don't see why it couldn't happen.
WarriorN · 07/03/2021 21:41

I tried spinster for a bit but I can't work out how to work it. I think it's a bit like twitter. I prefer the layout here.
