Old thread nearly full!

————————————-

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember there are people out there who would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3944572-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-5?pg=40

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

PBP gets thread shut down www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4172083-PBP-gets-thread-shut-down

I can see why in this instance because of the possibility of screenshots they might feel compelled to remove it.

On spoof names - I registered the variant with big I in place of the l in my NN after the curious (and non malicious) incident of two BertrandRussell's apparently on the same thread. I did come across someone who innocently had a variant with an 0 instead of o but she chose another one when I pointed out male swamp dragons can't tolerate others or even their mirror image. O/0 variants might be worth claiming.
I strongly suggests everyone checks for spoofing possibilities in their name and takes a few minutes to claim them.

CranberriesChoccyAgain · 21/02/2021 10:13

^^ It speaks very much to the dishonesty from their side and that they have nothing intellectual to argue about. Resorting to sock-puppetry and character assassination is pretty desperate.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/02/2021 10:17

Is Bertrand still around?

MichelleofzeResistance · 21/02/2021 10:18

I keep thinking, repeatedly, about Debbie Hayton's closing line in that article last weekend. Debbie really nailed it there. But I won't quote it as I have no doubt that it would be deleted.

Beamur · 21/02/2021 10:28

The sock puppet/spoof account explains the suddenly very odd posts. I'd posted on that thread and at the point I bowed out thought it was really quite unpleasant and combative. I'm quite glad it was taken down.
I hope that the OP comes back at least for some solidarity and support.
Personally, I really don't think it's worth directly engaging with the disruptors. The minute you stop addressing the key points of a thread and get sucked into a trivial argument that derails it, they win. Plus to boot it really looks like there are repeated attempts at the moment to rile regular posters into stepping outside the already very tight margins allowed on FWR.
Let's not make the mods work so hard.
Avoid directly confronting and if you feel your blood pressure rising then maybe wait to post until you've had time to think.

I totally agree with this.

GCAcademic · 21/02/2021 10:36

Now you mention it, I haven't seen Bertrand for a while, so just checked. She seems to have stopped posting regularly after January last year, but did post in December. Possibly avoiding all the Covid stuff on here?

Also what happened with the thread about the dating app...

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4165570-MEN-taking-over-lesbian-dating-app

Thread deleted
Message from MNHQ: We had some concerns about this thread and felt it best it come down for now.

Or are you also talking about this one?

I read the ‘heart thumping’ thread and yep first post on that thread was goady and called out. Surprised they pulled the whole thread Confused

I'd like to read that. Any chance of a link? Failing that could you tell me where to look?

MichelleofzeResistance · 21/02/2021 11:12

I think it was the Sunday Times last weekend, one of the newspapers where Debbie is a regular columnist.

Worth posting this as a separate PSA thread?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/02/2021 12:11

Things have come to a pretty underpass if women can't use I, L or O in their usernames on a board because of the possibility that malign little twerps could pretend to be them and post unpleasant nonsense in their nearly-name!

MichelleofzeResistance · 21/02/2021 12:16

I suspect this game would only be played with regulars whose names are well known, and it should be possible to spot in seconds if a well known poster suddenly appears to have experienced a massive change of view without explaining or evidencing it first.

OvaHere · 21/02/2021 12:26

Sorted mine (I think) I've never name changed before but Ova with a 0 would be easy to fake. It seems to be registered as my other name now.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/02/2021 12:26

The problem, as with men being able to walk into women's spaces unchallenged, is not that it is likely so much as it being possible, isn't it.

Beamur · 21/02/2021 12:48

If a regular poster suddenly goes off piste we should simply report to MN to check its not a spoof

Yes. A man coming into a female space and appropriating our identity. Never happens, does it?
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/02/2021 13:12

Never heard of such a thing in my life. I am shocked, I tell you, shocked!

I dunno, going off-piste is sometimes hard to spot - some of us are piste more often than not.
