Old thread nearly full!

————————————-

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember there are people out there who would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3944572-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-5?pg=40

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

They don't tell you when you get a deletion! I've scrolled back and seen I was deleted. I'm doubly enraged- if they don't tell you, how do you know? How do you make sure you aren't in trouble?

And... J gets to claim to be like me, I don't get to say 'no you're not'!

I can't remember exactly what I said, but that was essentially it. 'You are not like me!'. Hardly even handed!

Biscuitsanddoombar · 18/02/2021 07:44

I’m relieved it’s still up!

I assume we wouldn’t know all the feminists contacting Robin directly as they all go to another school Grin

They always do Grin

I always laugh myself silly when someone wheels out the “I’ve had eleventy-nine DMs with people who think I’m DEAD RIGHT and that you smell of poo!”

I mean, even if it was true, why would anyone give a hoot about the opinion of someone who doesn’t even have the courage or gumption to put up a message on an anonymous chat board? Who cares? I don’t care what Wormtongue whispers in your ear.

Very fitting for this debate though, where all the action happens in back rooms and suddenly WHOOPS, the decision is made, the laws are changed and women are playing catch-up.

They always email you if they've given you a strike. I think I had about half my posts on that thread deleted. No idea why.

Deliriumoftheendless · 18/02/2021 08:46

Perfect ending post from winesalot on that thread.

SunsetBeetch · 18/02/2021 08:56

@CaraDuneRedux

Reminder - if you know from numerous past instances that a certain poster brings nothing to a discussion, ever, and only frequents threads in order to goad, derail, straw man and wilfully misrepresent other posters' positions you can simply scroll past their verbal diarrhea without even bothering to read it.

I find this leaves me with a much more sanguine and equitable outlook on life.

Plus - bonus: since they're only here for the narc supply, cutting that off annoys the hell out of them.

True. And the narc rage that follows is very helpful.
Winesalot · 18/02/2021 09:39

Delirium, I was aiming for second or third last. Just wanted to get my no in again incase I disappear soon. Back to the naughty step line I go.

ArabellaScott · 18/02/2021 10:16

Well done, Wines. A good finish.

Re deletions, I think not all deletions count as a strike. Not quite sure what the mysterious algorithm is for deciding it, but so far, I've been emailed for strikes, not just deletions.

persistentwoman · 18/02/2021 10:16

What a week! Makes me laugh when people come on here claiming that they get lots of PMs about how right they are and how mean all us feminists are. They forget that when you've had children, you recognise that technique - children use it all the time:
"Who said that?"

"Someone"

"Who's someone?"
"Not telling" Grin

SheGonBringThatAttitudeHome2 · 18/02/2021 10:16

I enjoyed your last post Winesalot xx

Winesalot · 18/02/2021 10:19

Thanks Arabella and everyone, but I have my emails.

persistentwoman · 18/02/2021 10:22

Agreed Arabella - I think it's the strike with an email that counts.
I did get a strike some months ago for stating that Lisa Nandy advocated paedophiles and rapists being in women's prisons. I sent MNHQ a copy of a press report quoting her saying that and got an apology and the post reinstated.

I don't blame MNHQ - I wouldn't have believed that a politician would recommend something as outrageous as this, but it just showed me how desperate the monitors are to silence these awkward revelations as someone reported it.

MichelleofzeResistance · 18/02/2021 10:50

Interesting that some people had loads of deletions and no strikes. I had one deletion which was a strike. For using words and language I've used plenty of times which I thought was in line with the guidelines. I'm no wiser now as to what I actually did wrong: it appears to be a case of having kept the guidelines and been impartial, careful, no generalisations, no personal attack or intention to be offensive and actually it involved acknowledging and genuflecting towards beliefs I don't hold I was being so careful, so it was a case of apparently being insufficiently coy. Why that was strikable rather than merely deletable, I also have absolutely no idea.

Doesn't help really.

Or engender much good feeling when 'cis' is appearing with more and more frequency over the board and there's an entire thread about it happily rocking along despite about 80% of the posts saying it's an offensive word. I know this is to do with women on FWR not rushing to control other people's speech and probably discussing rather than reporting, but the double standards just illustrate all over again that this is about power and privilege and the requirement to accept a subordinate position within it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/02/2021 10:55

IKWYM Michelle.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/02/2021 11:02

Likewise.

TinselAngel · 18/02/2021 11:02

Still reporting posts on a full thread Hmm

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/02/2021 11:12

And reporting where the post quotes a deleted post too.

Did we lose anyone permanently?

I'm still Spartacus btw.

ArabellaScott · 18/02/2021 11:12

Yep, absolutely, Michelle. I think I've reported a post about once on Mumsnet, and it wasn't on FWR, it was somewhere someone seemed to be at risk of harming themselves and they'd got a really poisonous response.

ArabellaScott · 18/02/2021 11:13

Did we lose anyone permanently?

I dislike that we can't really know this - because of name changes and because we won't hear from them! I had thought about setting up a sort of muster station on Spinster or similar where banned MN posters could gather and we could see who'd been lost.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 18/02/2021 11:14

Thats a good idea
Winesalot · 18/02/2021 11:16

I wondered this too. I have noticed some significant names dropping off over the past few months and don't know if they were banned or just busy.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/02/2021 11:18

Has Old Crone been sighted today? She got a lot of deletions.

picklemewalnuts · 18/02/2021 11:44

Oldcrone was here at 8.23, reassuring me about strikes.

I have reported lots of posts, but only where I felt the OP was vulnerable and the comment was personally nasty. Never on GC threads. I think the goady posts should stand as evidence against the speaker.

Which suggests to me that the deleted posts are for speaking truth rather than because they are offensive.

Sophoclesthefox · 18/02/2021 11:51

Well. What an enlightening thread that turned out to be!

GCAcademic · 18/02/2021 11:54

Which suggests to me that the deleted posts are for speaking truth rather than because they are offensive.

This certainly seems to be increasingly the case.

Interesting that some people had loads of deletions and no strikes. I had one deletion which was a strike. For using words and language I've used plenty of times which I thought was in line with the guidelines.

Same. There has been a shift in moderation, for sure. Decisions are being made which go well beyond what is stated in the guidelines.
