Old thread nearly full!

————————————-

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember there are people out there who would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3944572-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-5?pg=40

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Good to see OC. I hope Datun is present and correct and ready to answer the roll call!

Winesalot · 18/02/2021 12:12

Anyone else with a strike seek to find out what 'uncivil' meant in relation to their post? I genuinely have asked so I can work out what is crossing the line. Being a product of my country Australian upbringing, I think that I might have a deficiency in what qualifies here in the UK.

She is!

VioletAlder · 18/02/2021 12:39

I got deleted for asking one poster if they appreciated the back up they were getting from another poster, & if they were in agreement with that second poster's position generally. 🤷🏻‍♀️

There's very little point asking. As someone astutely pointed out once the rules are like a game of Mornington Crescent.
YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/02/2021 12:56

Or Russian Roulette.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/02/2021 12:59

I'm not surprised that was reported, Violet. Awkward.

MichelleofzeResistance · 18/02/2021 13:02

Or the Hogwarts staircases.

The ratchet is definitely increasing in one direction. We've shifted in time on the guidelines from obviously against guidelines to now increasingly subtle shades of what may or may not be civil enough expression of something quite obviously truthful. HQ seem to be under constant pressure and what is 'uncivil' is being constantly redefined in one direction. Of course the aim will be long term to just report for anyone saying anything at all, weetabix included.

MichelleofzeResistance · 18/02/2021 13:06

I mean we're down to word choices now.

No question that it's truthful, no question that it's not intended to cause offense, but policing the delicacy and sensitivity of a (perfectly appropriate and often years worth of perfectly acceptable) word choice and how a valid point is framed.

Ladies will you please stand up for your rights with more delicacy, tact, coyness and care for the sensitivity of those trampling your rights and openly telling you how much they don't care about you.

ArabellaScott · 18/02/2021 13:07

One Cormoran here, too.

I'm sure there are many people who are working hard to wipe MN off the face of the earth. Inconvenient, troublesome women just won't be quiet, eh?

picklemewalnuts · 18/02/2021 13:07

Didn't a post get deleted because the conversation had turned to recipes, which was 'not in the spirit'? Ironic, from the forum which brings us the Biscuit.

Beamur · 18/02/2021 13:07

Weetabix are not the only cereal...

OldCrone · 18/02/2021 13:08

@YetAnotherSpartacus

Has Old Crone been sighted today? She got a lot of deletions.
Still here (so far). I had another post deleted this morning with a strike this time. Someone really doesn't like what I've been saying.
BoreOfWhabylon · 18/02/2021 13:09

I got two deletions (my first in years!) but no strikes as far as I'm aware. It was the NSFW twitter pics that tipped me over the edge, I'm afraid.

I think MNHQ are trying hard to be seen to be non-partisan and the very fact that they allowed the thread to stay up is to be commended. It brought a lot of sunlight although it must have massively increased their workload.

Beamur · 18/02/2021 13:09

I guess some people don't like the recipe tactic. Although I have to say I do appreciate some of the recipes that get posted.

Yeah - I got a post deleted in a non-FWR section too...

Name change time?

Or, in my case, retreat to the Litter Tray and play nice for a while ...

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/02/2021 13:15

They made me feel sick.

fatblackcatspaw · 18/02/2021 13:16

yes Mornington Crescent is the best way to describe it... maybe we should refer to MorningCrescentStation instead?

Winesalot · 18/02/2021 13:21

Would it happen to be a sensitivity about the occupation of one of the posters on the thread?

Winesalot · 18/02/2021 13:21

Another discussion to be had about power.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 18/02/2021 13:22

I was deleted for quoting a deleted post.

It's absolutely ridiculous.

334bu · 18/02/2021 13:27

🍒 Must be more careful🙁

DeaconBoo · 18/02/2021 13:32

@Wrongsideofhistorymyarse

I was deleted for quoting a deleted post.

It's absolutely ridiculous.

That's standard practice. It doesn't mean you get a strike.
Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 18/02/2021 13:37

Deacon I wasn't clear, I mean the amount of deletions on the thread is ridiculous, not my own. I know that's standard.

We're definitely being monitored.

RozWatching · 18/02/2021 13:56

If we're not even allowed to name someone's sex as the reason why we object to them taking women's places, it kind of forces us to argue, absurdly, that these are the wrong kind of women. That, for me, is uncivil, and I find the slightly self-congratulatory messages about allowing 'civil' debate quite grating and cringy if I'm honest.
