We can talk about damilola Taylor, smiley culture, Jean Charles menezes, Steven Lawrence. And the others. I'm in a met place and always have been. Bribery, corruption. Telling John warboys victims to get stuffed. I mean so much so much.
The met is and always has been institutionally racist and misogynist. That's a conversation to have
I live in a "met" area in the north of England and what's happening here is impossible to discuss. I have more or less given up now. It's so disheartening and especially when the victims of racism, trafficking, forced prostitution and in some cases murder, are girls and young women. Thousands upon thousands of victims, in an ongoing situation
The thing that I find difficult about all this is the thing where USA culture etc is taken to apply to different countries.
There is a lot to talk about wrt to USA and racism, history, weaponising the police etc etc the prison stats I could go on for hours.
But we're a UK website and this is not our history. Our police forces are set up differently. They aren't armed.
Karen is not a middle class name in England at least. That comes up over and over.
I've seen threads where posters have got really worked up over words that simply do not have the same meaning here as in America. And even when told. It doesn't mean that here. Have still been told to shut up.
The American Karen thing has been eagerly adopted by misogynists. Shocker.
I'm sure that women in the USA do this stuff. What are the white men doing? I'm fairly sure it would be just as bad or worse.
If we want to talk about racism and the public and the police in the UK we have our own history to discuss .
I am tired of being asked to consider/ justify etc stuff that happens in a different country 1000s of miles away.
Absolutely this. Well said and the part where you say being told off for using language that has different understandings. I've been told off by Americans for using the word "thug". When I've pointed out that it isn't considered a racially charged word in England and that I live in England, I've still been told not to use it. Shot down for speaking my own language!
It's as if some Americans can't conceive of a world outside their own borders. This applies to Americans from all ethnic backgrounds too.
