Time Magazine published the following article about white women and the "Karen" meme. I can't imagine what it's like being called Karen and white these days

Jesus Christ, this is a new low, even for this board

Standard around here. Why would anyone defend these women - just because they’re white and over 40 is means they’re somehow being victimised? It’s quite pathetic.
FixItUpChappie · 09/12/2020 05:07

What a boring article. If people use the word violence to mean 'stuff that annoys me', how do they describe being punched in the face?

^^Yes, this. It's all so fucking precious

turnitonagain · 09/12/2020 06:18

So racism is only real if you get punched?

Flaxmeadow · 09/12/2020 06:50

NiceGerbil

We can talk about damilola Taylor, smiley culture, Jean Charles menezes, Steven Lawrence. And the others. I'm in a met place and always have been. Bribery, corruption. Telling John warboys victims to get stuffed. I mean so much so much.

The met is and always has been institutionally racist and misogynist. That's a conversation to have

I live in a "met" area in the north of England and what's happening here is impossible to discuss. I have more or less given up now. It's so disheartening and especially when the victims of racism, trafficking, forced prostitution and in some cases murder, are girls and young women. Thousands upon thousands of victims, in an ongoing situation

The thing that I find difficult about all this is the thing where USA culture etc is taken to apply to different countries.

There is a lot to talk about wrt to USA and racism, history, weaponising the police etc etc the prison stats I could go on for hours.

But we're a UK website and this is not our history. Our police forces are set up differently. They aren't armed.

Karen is not a middle class name in England at least. That comes up over and over.

I've seen threads where posters have got really worked up over words that simply do not have the same meaning here as in America. And even when told. It doesn't mean that here. Have still been told to shut up.

The American Karen thing has been eagerly adopted by misogynists. Shocker.

I'm sure that women in the USA do this stuff. What are the white men doing? I'm fairly sure it would be just as bad or worse.

If we want to talk about racism and the public and the police in the UK we have our own history to discuss .

I am tired of being asked to consider/ justify etc stuff that happens in a different country 1000s of miles away.

Absolutely this. Well said and the part where you say being told off for using language that has different understandings. I've been told off by Americans for using the word "thug". When I've pointed out that it isn't considered a racially charged word in England and that I live in England, I've still been told not to use it. Shot down for speaking my own language!

It's as if some Americans can't conceive of a world outside their own borders. This applies to Americans from all ethnic backgrounds too.

@turnitonagain

No, violence is only real if you get punched. Lots of other awful, oppressive stuff exists but it's only violence if its violence.

Changing the meaning of a word so it can be applied to women is a transparent piece of trickery.

turnitonagain · 09/12/2020 07:55

Calling police knowing they have the means to commit violence against an innocent person would, in my opinion, be somewhere on the order of a violent act.

mollscroll · 09/12/2020 08:00

Entitled middle aged, middle class white women refusing to wear masks, taking it upon themselves to be judge jury and executioner to young black guys.. why wouldn't we call this out. Baffling

It’s baffling that you think this happens. Who are these middle class white women waging war on young black men? Please do cite evidence of this sustained campaign of violence and bigotry by white middle class women toward young black men.

mollscroll · 09/12/2020 08:02

‘Using their femininity’ to trap and damage men. Jesus.

Nomnomarrgh · 09/12/2020 08:05

My Mum’s not white and its been dreadful to hear her cry about her name being used in this manner.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/12/2020 08:13

It's a shitty misogynistic term.

You're a Karen if you won't wear a mask.

You're a Karen if you wear a mask and insist other people do.

The only way not to be a Karen is to scuttle about with your head down and hope no one notices you.

Even then you're a Karen if someone says you are.

This.

Worst compliance with covid restrictions is in men and young people. So not "Karens" then

turnitonagain · 09/12/2020 08:16

It’s unbelievable to me how this board is full of literal panic over women being bullied out of existence, but it’s far and away one of the most tone deaf places about discrimination or oppression of any other group.

White women in America can be viciously racist. And black people have know that for centuries. If your only takeaway from the Karen meme is that it’s unfair to white women - God help us as a society.

Passmeabottlemrjones · 09/12/2020 08:17

Funny how everyone knows exactly what a woman is when they're being misogynistic.

Yes this! There is no ambiguity about what a woman is, when there is the chance to really stick the boot in, is there?

The only way not to be a Karen is to scuttle about with your head down and hope no one notices you.

And this. Don't say anything, be invisible, or perhaps you can speak out but only in a very narrow way that will keep certain people happy. That way, you will win the ultimate prize of 'not being seen as a Karen' (is there a word for that?)

Passmeabottlemrjones · 09/12/2020 08:20

I think it's the 'white women are violent' thing that people have an issue with... Because generally speaking, it's not true all.
turnitonagain · 09/12/2020 08:21

So asking armed police to intervene in a petty dispute with a black man is not violence?

QuentinWinters · 09/12/2020 08:22

So why should black women called Karen be associated with racist behaviour, every time someone addresses them by name?
Why use a womans name that's common in the English-speaking world as shorthand for a particular brand of American racism?
Why should women have to suck up being insulted like that in the name of racism? And it isn't just white women, as pp said

TriflePudding · 09/12/2020 08:24

I utterly detest the use of ‘Karen’ to describe a a woman who doesn’t keep her head down, it’s just another way to keep women in their place.

No, it's a telephone call. Violence is entirely the wrong word for it. If its malicious then there are words for that, and appropriate punishments. When men commit almost all of the violence in the world, it's a dirty trick to try to find ways of making women the real baddies. And when I say a dirty trick, I mean our boring old friend, misogyny.
ChloeCrocodile · 09/12/2020 08:29

Nope. The person responsible for the violent act is the person who commits it. Whether that is police or a random person on the street. Calling the police just because the person is black is racist, and that is wrong all on its own. It doesn't become violence just because you think racism isn't bad enough by itself.

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/12/2020 09:16

This explains a lot. If people just think that White women over 40 are never the victim then it would explain why both of my friends can never get the police to attend when they have armed intruders in the house or when one of my friends who has an injunction out on her stbexh and him and his family were attempting to kick in her front door they didn’t come round.
Do we think the police thought because of their White privilege they weren’t entitled to be protected.

PirateCatQueen · 09/12/2020 09:32

So, basically NAWWALT.

turnitonagain · 09/12/2020 09:35

@MorrisZapp the woman in Central Park lied and said she was being attacked, and made clear to say it was a black man, while pretending to cry.

“just a phone call” is an interesting way of putting it.

turnitonagain · 09/12/2020 09:36

@PirateCatQueen

So, basically NAWWALT.
Yes. And even when it’s a completely different country, that still needs to be said. Apparently MN users deeply identify with a handful of American women who were filmed being racist and entitled. Speaks volumes I’d say.
