Music by women for 14 year old niece?

She often visits and i'd like to introduce her to some empowering female role models, she loves music so i'd like to find some for her to listen to, women who go against patriarchal standards and can inspire her.
I'm thinking Patti Smith (BIIGGG FAN Grin) but i'm not sure if it would be appropriate? I got into her at around 16 but a lot of her music is quite deep and heavy but I think she was, and is, a brilliant woman who certainly goes against standards!!
Would appreciate some requests, thank you!! Smile

Lauryn Hill!

Her album the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of the best of all time.

Are L7 too sweary?

Scout2016 · 09/10/2020 17:37

Little Simz is young, current and talented.
I do like Lorde. There's Lissie too but she might be a bit middle of the road.
I first liked Patti Smith around that age OP.

Fiona Apple

Yes @FedUpWithBriiiiick - I was getting worried there. Fetch the Boltcutters kept me sane throughout lockdown. Also loving Pheobe Bridgers right now.

Bjork - such a virtuoso.
Hole for kick ass, guitar posturing and gravelly vocals.

And you must show them Elastica - look at this video. I can’t help but think that any girl looking as gorgeous as Justine would have felt pressure to drop the e off her name in this climate.

Slightly more now is Alice Phoebe Lou - beautiful voice

Blondie, 10,000 Maniacs, Cowboy Junkies, Aretha, Mavis Staples, Wendy and Lisa, Roberta Flack

How about HAIM for something a bit more modern? They’re ace, they fired their agent after finding out they were being paid 10 times less than someone else at a festival. Another vote for Alanis Morrisette too - Jagged Little Pill is the best angry album!

Deliriumoftheendless · 09/10/2020 18:59

Ruby
Kate Bush
Grace Jones
The Slits
Nina Hagen

Julee Cruise has a beautiful voice
There’s another singer but I’ve totally forgotten her name and her songs (age) but I’ll try and find her.

What styles of music does she like currently? Not too sure about "female" essentially being a genre....!

Anyway: Kenickie!

Amazing album Lonny. Her best. Especially Under the Table, Ladies and For Her. That "Good Morning..." lyric is powerful stuff.
toomanyspiderplants · 09/10/2020 19:22

I love amy macdonald!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/10/2020 19:50

@FedUpWithBriiiiick Kick me under the table... it's like a documentary in a song, I cannot tell you how much I love it. Me and my pal quite often just murmur the 'oh-ho-ho' bit when mansplaining is occurring...

OP Be Charlotte is a young, contemporary singer from Scotland, she's brilliant.

stoneysongs · 09/10/2020 19:51

My DD liked Lily Allen's songs and approach to life at that age

PossiblyPattio · 09/10/2020 19:55

She likes Ariana Grande, Billie eilish etc but I showed her some classic rock a while back (Queen and Fleetwood Mac etc) and she quite liked it!! I often have it playing in my house Smile
