Music by women for 14 year old niece?

PossiblyPattio · 09/10/2020 11:29

She often visits and i'd like to introduce her to some empowering female role models, she loves music so i'd like to find some for her to listen to, women who go against patriarchal standards and can inspire her.
I'm thinking Patti Smith (BIIGGG FAN Grin) but i'm not sure if it would be appropriate? I got into her at around 16 but a lot of her music is quite deep and heavy but I think she was, and is, a brilliant woman who certainly goes against standards!!
Would appreciate some requests, thank you!! Smile

So many great suggestions already, but I agree, she'll have her own preferences and discoveries to introduce to you and that's good. My DDs have introduced me to as many new artists as I have to them, they love some stuff I can't listen to, and can't bear lots of my favourites. I'd add to the long list you have:

Dodie
Orla Gartland
Snail Mail
Girl Ray
Tiny Ruins
Lucy Dacus
Big Joanie
Jenny Lewis

I don’t think music dates in the same way as other arts maybe do though. What was a great song in 1950 is still a great song now.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 11/10/2020 18:56

And so much is about exposure. My siblings absolutely loved Cat Stevens as teenagers because my mum played a greatest hits cd around the house. Not remotely cool by most standards but they didn’t care because a great song is a great song.

I don't think there's any harm in making suggestions. Seems to me the OP was trying to bond with her niece, which is lovely. Even if the music isn't what her niece might go for, it seems a nice gesture of affection.

Bit like making a mix tape, as horribly old fashioned as that may be. Smile

What's the worst that will happen? Like the time I gave my niece a book of poetry in case she was into it. She wasn't- no big deal.

Sorry if someone has already said but Ani Difranco. She is amazing! So inspiring. Powerful lyrics and she is a wickedly accomplished guitarist.

CoffeeAndEnnui · 11/10/2020 20:20

To accompany all these epic recommendations, she might enjoy the Kathleen Hannah documentary and Girls to the Front a book about the riot grrrl movement.

There is also a fab YA novel called Moxie about a teenager who is inspired to start a fanzine and feminist group at her school to effect change after learning about her mum's riot grrrl roots. It will soon be released as a Netflix film too (made by Amy Poehler) so she'll be discovering all this awesome stuff ahead of all her friends!

Kate Nash was excellent when I saw her a few years ago. Two songs are in the link both quite different styles.

KT Tunstell has some cracking songs, here's the very excellent Black Horse & the Cherry Tree on Jools Holland

Another really absolutely brilliant creative singer-musician is Wallis Bird. Encore is probably my favourite song of hers but here's In Dictum that's just lovely.

Then there's always Sinnead O'Conner ... This version of '4th & Vine' with Kate Tempest is superb the one with Sinnead singing lead is equally good though.

If you’re not able to come up with ideas for this yourself I’m not sure you’re the right Auntie to be doing it.

Socrates11 · 12/10/2020 00:14

Don't know why I put all the extra 'n's in Sinead lol

SapphireSeptember · 12/10/2020 21:47

I was going to add Evanescence, I loved them when I was 14 (still do aged 32.)

bluebluezoo · 12/10/2020 21:57

@Trivium4all

But wait, that's not STEM...

Which is odd now you say it as in my head music, especially composing/classical, is very mathematical. So women composers fall down a hole where it is seen, like maths, as a “male” field, yet like you say it’s arts rather than STEM, which is “female”, so there’s no support in the same way..

Back to the thread- more current is Lennon (and Maisie) Stella. With added advantage of Nashville box set to watch!!

Labralion · 12/10/2020 22:06

Veruca Salt! Seether gads my teen/peri anthem! Also Hole, divisive as she is I think Courtney love is one of the best rockstars of our generation. Also mentioned L7, babes in toyland, breeders etc all good for a rock out!

CaveMum · 12/10/2020 22:07

There was a programme on BBC Four a few years ago called “Girls in Bands”. Whilst it’s not available to watch right now, this link contains a list of songs used in the programme so may offer inspiration: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06mxpjc

CaveMum · 12/10/2020 22:09

Women’s Hour did a “Top 40 Women in Music” programme a few years ago too: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bkpjrk
