Music by women for 14 year old niece?

She often visits and i'd like to introduce her to some empowering female role models, she loves music so i'd like to find some for her to listen to, women who go against patriarchal standards and can inspire her.
I'm thinking Patti Smith (BIIGGG FAN Grin) but i'm not sure if it would be appropriate? I got into her at around 16 but a lot of her music is quite deep and heavy but I think she was, and is, a brilliant woman who certainly goes against standards!!
Would appreciate some requests, thank you!! Smile

Loving this thread! Unfortunately I'm on the gin, so can't think straight, but Leanne La Havas, Jessica Hoop and Janelle Monnaie (sp?)

This thread is fabulous. I’ve had a rare day wfh with no video meetings, asking Alexa to play music all by all these women. I best friend ftim school had a very cool mum. She listened to Joan Armatrading and Eurythmics a lot. Turns out they still have a special place in my heart.

SpeedofaSloth · 09/10/2020 21:13

I loved Kate Bush at that age, and Kirsty McColl too.

TeaAndHobnob · 09/10/2020 21:19

Howling Bells/Juanita Stein are amazing. Ane Brun might be with a try too.

If she doesn't object to grime try some Lady Leshurr who is bloody marvellous and from Birmingham.

FifteenToes · 09/10/2020 21:25

Billie Holiday

Clara Schumann

BingBongSong · 09/10/2020 21:29

Enjoying reading all of the suggestions!
My immediate thoughts were Elastica (LOVED their album when I was a teen), Alanis Morissette and Nina Simone, but there are so many great suggestions here.

I also liked Nelly Furtado, Norah Jones, Shakira, and Sheryl Crow in the 90s.

There's a Mumsnet Radical Spotify playlist, although some of the songs might be a bit grown up for your dd.
She is.
Apparently 'cornflake girl' is about FGM - I only learned that recently. Didn't know she'd written books - I'm gonna search them out , so thanks for that @mumonthehill !

Not exactly on spec, but I unexpectedly really got into Taylor Swift's new album. A few songs instantly made me think of female friendships from my childhood and early teenage years. Excuse me while I sink into this one Smile
People assume Taylor is a pop bimbo because she's beautiful, blonde and has released some poppier tunes (never without a message though). But she is an incredible songwriter (even her older stuff can be really mature), doesn't overly sexialise herself and is quite the feminist. I think she's incredible.

Christine & The Queens

Ooh interesting. The lead singer identifies as “genderqueer” according to an interview, and is outside the gender binary.

So does that come under “music by women”?

elgreco · 09/10/2020 23:22

Cranberries

ImAllOut · 09/10/2020 23:34

For slightly more recent, but not 100% modern, then I'd suggest:

Sara Bareilles, Imogen Heap, Ingrid Michaelson, Brandi Carlile, Regina Spektor

I'm twice your daughter's age but they got me through my teenage years.

ImAllOut · 09/10/2020 23:38

My 13 yr old DD has really appreciated this thread. She's been wanting to find more female orientated music.
