Music by women for 14 year old niece?

She often visits and i'd like to introduce her to some empowering female role models, she loves music so i'd like to find some for her to listen to, women who go against patriarchal standards and can inspire her.
I'm thinking Patti Smith (BIIGGG FAN Grin) but i'm not sure if it would be appropriate? I got into her at around 16 but a lot of her music is quite deep and heavy but I think she was, and is, a brilliant woman who certainly goes against standards!!
Would appreciate some requests, thank you!! Smile

MIA, Lourde, La Roux, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kate Bush, Florence and the Machine (bar the dodgy one about hitting being loving), Goldfrapp, Joan Jett, Aldous Harding, Courtney Barnett, Santigold, Nadia Rose, Mattiel, Chaka Khan, The Go Team.

Joan Jett is a big favourite of my 7 year old.

Great thread. I've tried to spend 2020 listening to female artists so will be using plenty of these replies for inspiration.

I'd add Tracy Thorn, The Big Moon, Kacey Musgraves.

Joan Jett is the fucking bomb! I should add, OP, that I don't really censor sweary songs for my kids much, some of these might be sweary but I didn't put Peaches in because she's a bit much for a youngster. Smile

Can't believe you've not heard of Tori Amos! I love her, Little Earthquakes album is good. But her material is quite challenging and close to the mark. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Maybe more one for YOU rather than her!
I agree with most of the ones mentioned here.
Depends what kind of girl she is? Lot of folky singer songwriters again not to everyone's taste.

2old4thissite · 09/10/2020 16:18

Get some of these playing in the background and see how they go down. You don't want to make it feel like school music lessons or force feminist views on her. Unless she seems interested of course
Keep it funSmile

This the busker I was thinking of. She's good! (music video maybe not suitable for 14 year old.)

Here's the article about her weareimmo.com/busker-nehanda-is-quickly-becoming-an-online-sensation/

I loved at that age, and still do, Tracey Chapman, Joan Armatrading, Billie Holiday, Debbie Harry, Joni Mitchell, and Roberta Flack. Oh and Minnie Ripperton. And early Madonna.

And Nina Simone. Amy Winehouse. Grace Jones. PJ Harvey.

My 13 year old daughter is currently obsessed with Beabadoobee, Lush, Vivienne Girls, Wolf Alice, Clairo and Girl in Red. I've been really impressed with how much easier it has been for her to access music made by women (compared to when I was younger). She's a guitar player herself and thinks nothing of writing and recording her own songs. Her confidence is inspiring.

nitsandwormsdodger · 09/10/2020 16:56

Alanis moressett

FairFriday · 09/10/2020 16:56

Does she know Joanne Shaw Taylor - show her some of the live sets on YouTube.

Nonagoninfinity · 09/10/2020 16:57

I'd also second Soccer Mommy. All quite indie if that's her bag x

toria658 · 09/10/2020 16:58

Another Tori Amos vote here, plus she has recently released a book about being a woman in music called ‘Resistance’, which may be of interest?
