Music by women for 14 year old niece?

She often visits and i'd like to introduce her to some empowering female role models, she loves music so i'd like to find some for her to listen to, women who go against patriarchal standards and can inspire her.
I'm thinking Patti Smith (BIIGGG FAN Grin) but i'm not sure if it would be appropriate? I got into her at around 16 but a lot of her music is quite deep and heavy but I think she was, and is, a brilliant woman who certainly goes against standards!!
Would appreciate some requests, thank you!! Smile

Girlschool. Joan Jett. The bloody Spice Girls. Kim Carnes.
I deliberately didn't say Garbage cos I don't think Shirley knows what a woman is.

bluebluezoo · 09/10/2020 12:21

Nobody’s said Avril Lavigne yet...

If Shirley was behind this tweet, she can get in the bin.

Karen Carpenter.

As well as the music watch the film about her life.

Cam2020 · 09/10/2020 12:23

Alanis Morissette (Jagged Little Pill) and Skunk Anansie.

Has anyone noticed that the majority of these suggestions are from 60s to 90s? What has happened over recent years?!

Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated? angry

Bloody earworm now :(

Karen Carpenters story makes me cry Sad She was so beautiful, had the voice of an angel.

It became all about looks and that ridiculous autotune sound.
Cher. Wilson Phillips. Tsunami Bomb!

StayClosePooky · 09/10/2020 12:28

Came here to say Tori Amos but looks like I've been beaten. I'll say it again.... TORI AMOS!

Earswithfeet · 09/10/2020 12:30

Thanks butterer, just read that wiki page and it does completely make sense, just not something that had occurred to me before 🙂. Despite being a huge fan of tori I also haven’t listened to any of her most recent albums - for me she lost her edge a bit after to Venus and back

I second Laura Marling and of course Tori Amos (Me and a Gun - chilling) but also (and I’m going for modern here as she’s 14):
Angel Olson
Phoebe Bridgers
Sharon Von Etten

bluebluezoo · 09/10/2020 12:37

Billie Eilish. Bit obvious, but current and a great attitude towards body image.

bluebluezoo · 09/10/2020 12:38

Don’t forget Dolly, Tammy, and the rest of the country women....!

ilovegreen · 09/10/2020 12:40

Frazey Ford

bluebluezoo · 09/10/2020 12:41

Cyndi Lauper...

AnnaSW1 · 09/10/2020 12:46

I'd go more contemporary and say Sia.

Another vote for Suzanne Vega, Kate Bush and P J Harvey.

Got my girls some KT Tunstall when they were that age (an album called Tiger Suit I think).

Joni Mitchell and - a bit 80s rock - but I love Pat Benatar.

Also - more at the folky acoustic end of things: Corinne West, Jesca Hoop, Eliza Carthy and Karine Polwart - the latter a Scottish singer-songwriter whose songs include themes of nature and motherhood. She is fab!

saynotofondant · 09/10/2020 12:57

Wolf Alice - the lead singer /guitarist is female. They’re modern.
Their style is rock/grunge/electronic... songs fairly varied in style.
Here is their song Bros (2015) about female friendship

Notabadger · 09/10/2020 13:02

Tracey chapman

Notabadger · 09/10/2020 13:02

Tracy even

GrouchyKiwi · 09/10/2020 13:06

Ooh yes, Tracy Chapman is wonderful.

My 16 year old dd's playlist has a lot of Joanna Newsom on it and also First Aid Kit, also Laura Marling, but she's been mentioned already. First Aid Kit were the first band she ever saw live.
