Music by women for 14 year old niece?

She often visits and i'd like to introduce her to some empowering female role models, she loves music so i'd like to find some for her to listen to, women who go against patriarchal standards and can inspire her.
I'm thinking Patti Smith (BIIGGG FAN Grin) but i'm not sure if it would be appropriate? I got into her at around 16 but a lot of her music is quite deep and heavy but I think she was, and is, a brilliant woman who certainly goes against standards!!
Would appreciate some requests, thank you!! Smile

Amazing suggestions. Thank you.
Would Patti Smith be okay to show her do you think? I'm dying to but i'm not sure! Smile

Good luck with this! if I tried to introduce my music choices by “empowering women” to my 14 year old I would get 🙄🙄🙄. She is very clear what she likes and what she doesn’t and it sure ain’t Tori Amos! Just managIng your expectations!

ACatWhoBinds · 09/10/2020 13:38

Kimya Dawson is wonderful! I love her so much. Her album ‘Remember That I Love You’ is AMAZING.
I also second X-ray spex, poly styrene is incredible.

weebarra · 09/10/2020 13:45

Oh yes to Courtney Barnett, Angel
Olsen, Sharon Van Etten. Haley Bonar too!

DPotter · 09/10/2020 14:01

Tracy Chapman
Michelle Shocked
Bjork
if you're thinking folk and Maddy Prior - June Tabor
Kate Bush
Kasey Chambers - aussie singer songer writer
Joanne Kelly - great blues voice, died waaaayy to young

tabulahrasa · 09/10/2020 14:16

Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Halsey...

Strokethefurrywall · 09/10/2020 14:27

I was about to say Tori Amos as well! I was obsessed with her when I was 14, played all her music on the piano.

Pink is excellent, Alamo's Morrisette, Stevie Nicks, Tracey Chapman.

ODFOx · 09/10/2020 14:32

Meredith Brookes? Mostly not breaking down the patriarchy as such but Bitch is such a great song about women, by a woman.

Earswithfeet · 09/10/2020 14:34

@Igneococcus I saw first aid kit on the Andrew marr show a while back (god I feel middle aged 😄) doing a song called fireworks which was lovely- are they worth more of a listen?

Carouselfish · 09/10/2020 14:34

Ani diFranco

Igneococcus · 09/10/2020 14:41

@earswithfeet

Yes, they are. They were fabulous live. We saw them about 2.5 years ago in Glasgow and they were great.
There is this great video on Youtube where they make

Gwynfluff · 09/10/2020 15:05

@Rennster has made excellent suggestions

Angel Olson, Phoebe Bridgers, Sharon Von Etten

And we had a few Courtney Barnett's, Anna Calvi

I'd add Cate Le Bon, Marika Hackman, the Hinds, my own wokester loves Judee Sill (hidden Laurel Canyon gem), Soccer Mommy, US Girls (so good), Susanne Sundhfor, Mattiel, Aldous Harding.

Though these are all alternative, but the one excellent thing is the number of alternative/indie female musicians around now.

weebarra · 09/10/2020 15:09

@Earswithfeet - first aid kit are great. So fab live, I saw them in Perth Concert hall which is a lovely venue.

weebarra · 09/10/2020 15:16

Yes, DS1 is 12 and really likes Mattiel, First Aid Kit, Public Service Broadcasting, Belle & Sebastian (and the Smiths Blush)

moley75 · 09/10/2020 15:19

@Butterer

Cate Le Bon, Emma Tricca and Beth Jeans Houghton

I really like Jane Weaver, and I'd like to says thanks for the Emma Tricca mention. I'm listening now to her and she's great. Not sure that a 14 year old might be so keen.

So since this is really a thread about music we like by women Grin, I'd also like to add Aimee Mann, Rozi Plain, Nina Nastasia, Nadine Shah, Lida Husik, and Jackie Oates.

ANoTail · 09/10/2020 15:23

Mattiel, Debbie Harry, Imelda May, Aretha Franklin, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Carly Simon

AgentCooper · 09/10/2020 15:27

Ooh she’s in for a treat with Patti Smith! I always think Gloria is a good way in because it’s such a banger. And Because the Night. I know they’re technically covers but she smashes them.

The Slits are maybe a bit sweaty but I can’t imagine anyone not loving their cover of Heard It Through the Grapevine.

Solange. Though she’s 14 and probably well aware of her. She’s so cool and takes no shit.

And definite yes to some country. Emmylou Harris, Linda Rondstadt, Dolly Parton.

Nina Simone!

AgentCooper · 09/10/2020 15:27

Sorry, The Slits are sweary, not sweaty Grin

tinselvestsparklepants · 09/10/2020 15:29

Margaret Glaspy
Bat for Lashes
Anna Calvi
Joan as Policewoman

AbsintheFriends · 09/10/2020 15:34

Who was the young woman busker who was speaking out recently about gender bollox? I'm pretty sure she was mentioned on here (because this is where I get all my info) and she was pretty impressive. Can't say what her music's like as I didn't get round to looking it up, but I imagine that if I like it a 14 year old might not!

Lizzo is pretty cool. Taylor Swift has matured so much since the Love Story days and is a really interesting woman (The Man is great!) And Kate Bush all the way - she's one of the few artists everyone in my house genuinely loves.

talesofginza · 09/10/2020 15:35

Christine and the Queens

@weebarra

Smiths are brilliant, we didn't know Morrissey was going to turn into what he did and Johnny Marr remains a gem, so I still listen.
